Danny Ainge is a very good GM at drafting players, yet like with Bill no one is perfect.
How many teams nail three top six picks in a row by taking the best player?
I didn't like the Grant Williams pick, yet I do understand why he took him. He's just too limited athletically to score in the post and have his great passing play in the NBA. Still at worst that's an average pick.
I don't get the Bane pick, yet again that's not some proof Danny is horrible. Go study other GMs. Like how many GMs are still GMs since Danny took over?
His big issue this year and this is my opinion that I really think is true, yet let's not debate this. He wanted Turner, he had his sights set on that trade and when Hayward blew that up he tried to rebound, yet it was too late at that point. I think he figured Thompson would be an asset that at worst he could trade. The fact he's looking for bigs that can score and shoot once again backs that up. So his one fault was overplaying his hand. It ended badly, yet I'm not going to say he sucks for doing that either. He's had a ton of success doing that exact thing in the past.
I liked the Langford pick, the guys I wanted more went before our pick. He's was a raw upside guy. You don't judge those picks for years.
I didn't want Nesmith, that is well documented. Yeah I would have taken Bane over him. Yet let's see what happens also. It looks horrible right now, that doesn't mean it will in a few years. You can't judge drafts after less than half a year.
You certainly shouldn't judge a GM off of one bad off-season when that certainly isn't the norm in his 15 year career. I do trust he'll fix this this mess.

That's what you see looking at the last 40 years of NBA Champions? They all play ISO? No, but they all have at least a guy who can at an elite level late in games. I don’t understand why this is hard to understand. Situationally, it’s basically vital. Absolutely, it's how you do that. 2018 vs 2020. 2018 didn't see ball movement stop, you just had young player go crazy cold. Rozier and Brown couldn't hit the side of a barn at one point. They weren't ready. Last year we actually played ISO because Walker couldn't handle the D, so Stevens tried it. Yeah Tatum isn't ready for that, heck he's never going to be LeBron. Yet that's stupid, go pop in tape of the Larry Bird Celtics. They weren't having Bird do ISO like that. Yeah he hit big shots, yet within the offense. Tatum and Brown are two of the best scorers in the league. You play 2018 team ball they will be just fine, yet that requires ball movement and a PG that isn't so small defenses can smother him. Which is why they went to ISO in the first place. If you remember it didn't start till the Toronto series when they went zone. You think Tatum just needs to get better doing what he did last year, I think we need different players around him. It's a team sport. Lots of young guys were ready, yet didn't have a good enough team around them. What sucks for us is we had that in 2018 with Horford and Rozier, now we don't.

Ainge kinda overplays hand a lot and it costs him. At end of day we are a .500 team wasting two top 25 players prime years. Either produce or move along so someone else can finish the job

Where you are going wrong is with the word “just”. I said they wouldn’t win until Tatum took that next step, but I didn’t say that’s all that they needed. Those 80s Celtics and Lakers teams were basically HOF all-star teams. Me saying 40 years was a mistake as you can’t compare the pre-salary cap world to this one. If we are expecting Danny to build a team like those 80s Celtics we will be waiting forever.

What next step? They still have the top scoring combo in the league. Tatum just had a 25 10 and 5 line in the playoffs.
If you believe he needs more around him, then how do you know he needs to improve?
It's a funny debate, that we need our top guys to be better, when no team has two guys scoring more.
I'd argue the 2018 and 2019 teams were just about as talented as those 80's Celtics teams. You just can't see it because they haven't made the HOF yet.
It's not just talent, it's how that talent fits and plays together that matters. Danny can certainly build a team where that happens, that's not a pipe dream.

I didn’t say he needed to score more or have a better line. I said he needed to be a closer. And i say that because NBA championship teams have their best player as a closer when you need to make something happen. We can agree to disagree on this but it’s how I feel about the NBA. And that’s how I “know” he needs to be better even though the supporting cast does as well. I also think Tatum is that guy just needs to finish better going to rim and he’ll do that as he gets stronger and smarter about how to play 40+ minutes in the playoffs series after series. Do you think there is a learning curve on how to be strong at the end of games? I do and I don’t think he was there last year in the playoffs. Wouldn’t be surprising if he were this year.

For for what this team needs to add around them:
- Kemba getting his mojo back as a scorer
- better interior D would be nice (Williams maybe)
- Langford coming back and playing good defense and offering something on offense would be nice.
I mean they only lost Kanter, Hayward and Wannamaker and Hayward was hurt the entire playoffs so you’re taking Kanter and Wannamaker. Pritchard kind of replaces Wannamaker so is Kanter making this big a difference? The team just needs to play better. I think having no practices is killing them.

Man, we look so bad. Its sad to watch. Replacing Hayward with TT was awful lol.
Brad Stevens and the two big lineup, name a worse duo
I guess Smart is actually our most important player

Tatum has been pretty inefficient lately
Starting lineup has been the problem so far today, not the bench

Embarrassing effort
Semi has been really terrible out there today
Hilarious that TT and Grant are plus players and everybody else is in the crapper
Also I hate saying this but TimeLord looks like garbage today. Hopefully it’s just him getting back into the swing of things

There was a charge anyway but that was nice to see Nesmith hustle back and show his athleticism on the block

Kanter is averaging 14 points and 14 rebounds over the last 10 games. Seasonally he is at 11 and 11.
It looks to me like our 3 point line is now being very closely guarded as we have no close to the basket threats. And firing up contested 3s is not a winning proposition.
It's a strong draft year, right?

You cannot say enough bad things about this team and coaching staff. Gutless doesn’t even begin to describe it.

Brad Stevens and the two big lineup, name a worse duo I guess Smart is actually our most important player Given the current roster construction and the way Kemba Walker is playing, yeah Smart might be the most important player. Without him your asking Tatum to be the primary creator. One stat stands out from last game, 14 assists. That's crazy bad. Best game was likely against the Raptors when they had a season high 30 assists. I think Tatum/Brown are ready as scorers and secondary creators, not primary creators.

Missing Smart on D and 3 as well as hurting our depth. Kemba as you say was shooting not just bad but horrifically bad appears to be getting his game and confidence back. In fact as horrendous and disheartening as the team has been the past few weeks I do see a silver lining. Random players on random night have had good games, such as Semi, Thompson (has come alive and shown he can add value to the team after sucking for the first 15 or so games) G. Williams has been better as it appeared to me that he took a step back at the start of the season but seems to be coming around, both Tatum and Brown focusing on getting assist when other teams double team them, Robert Williams keep doing what he has done I think his major weakness is simply experience as he occasionally loses his man on defensive rotations but his skill set just continues to show every time he's out there, I still love his upside. Pritchard what more can you say? I think Danny will land something with the TPE that will solidy the team. If Kemba's knee holds up I still think this team can make a ton of noise before it's all said and done. The only player that continuously hurts the team is Teague. His value is low so I wouldn't expect much but I look at moving his as addition by subtraction with Pritchard's play and the fact that at times Tatum, Brown and Smart all play point and that Kemba appears like he's turned the corner so to speak.

Honestly, this isn't the year to use the TPE. Use it in offseason, scoop up a lottery pick in a loaded draft and rest Brown. The COVIDness of the season is too unpredictable. Take a page out of the Sox book.

Take a page out of the Sox book. 0.0% chance of the lottery pick happening, and even if they rest Jaylen they probably still make the playoffs in the East I do not necessarily disagree about the TPE though

Have people looked at the standings? We're tied for 4th in the East, we'd be 9th in the West. I don't know how in the world even given this current stretch where people think it's easy for us to get a lottery pick.
Explain a rebuild to me?
Making a move now versus the off-season is all based on what's available. If the right move is there I prefer making it now. Rather than being up against a timer where you lose leverage. Yet I can see plus and minuses on both sides.
At the very least Danny needs to do something. Example use Kanter's trade exception to get a guy like Temple.
The crap thing is a lot of the players you'd want likely aren't available or aren't perfect fits.
Yet I've warmed to the idea of trading a first for Lonzo Ball if they take Thompson and Teague. Yeah not likely though.
Langford could help if he can get ready, yet reports now say he's out till after the all-star break. He's running out of time. He hasn't been able to play, this isn't Robert Williams who had a full training camp and off season to improve. He needs to get back asap and play if he's going to be ready for the playoffs.
I'd be all in on getting Blake Griffen if they buy him out. Not close to perfect, yet that would change a ton of things. Yet watch it work perfectly, then he gets injured once again.
It sucks, first time in years that the Celtics haven't been must watch TV. I do trust Danny though and reports have him being crazy active.
