I would have preferred whatever bugs were mobbing Joba Chamberlain that night.

The Spiders would have been a cool name, but baseball purists like us are in the minority when it comes to the marketing. You can see they wanted to retain their logo with the "ians". Honestly, I don't really have a reaction one way or the other so I guess I'm in the "meh" camp. My only thought when seeing it come through was "well that was quicker than the Washington Football Team". The Spiders were such a bad team though. And the current Cleveland baseball team has no connection with them and a better history, so no need to assume that mantle. I appreciate that the Naps were only named after their star player, but that was really the only past team name to Reassume.

I just assumed it was tied into some marketing deal With Disney. By the way, other than re-located franchises (Utah Jazz, LA Lakers), is there a dumber team name in North American sports than the Toronto Raptors? Named after a fad based on a summer movie from the early '90s. And a "raptor" isn't even a dinosaur; they just used it as a nickname for those dumb velociraptor guys that ate Newman.
Public contests turn out to be a terrible way to choose a team name.

I believe Cy Young was on the team, but those were the years of dual ownership and the owner transferred his player assets to his St. Louis club (eventually Cardinals), and the 1898 Cleveland Spiders who went a respectable 81-68 fell to 20-134 in 1899 before they were mercifully put out of their misery. I guess in a way, perhaps Harry Frazee, was a dual owner, or Ruppert owned Frazee. He took his Red Sox assets and transferred them to the Yankees, which reflected in the standings of course. My vote is for Cleveland Rockers, although that might be too closer to Rockies even if they're totally different thing. The other thing I associate with Rocker is John Rocker and that's not a good association. But still the Rock N Roll HOF..what other asset does Cleveland have? The Cleveland Wild Things or the Cleveland Jake Taylors? Cleveland Pedro Cerranos?

Today, the Rays. (The team named after me). It says a lot, though, that the Rays had to drop “Devil” before the Indians dropped Chief Wahoo. They’ll always be the Devil Rays to me. Back in their early days, I thought of them as the (Drake's) Devil Dogs.

Growing up on Major League Baseball w/ Ken Griffey Jr. I always thought that the Rays logo mascot was some type of canoe/kayak.

The Cleveland Non-Consecutives could work. Especially for that franchise.

It's cool now that they've gotten rid of the dino iconography. Raptors referencing pretend dinosaurs was dumb, but Raptors referencing birds of prey that will rip your face off is pretty sweet.

It's cool now that they've gotten rid of the dino iconography. Raptors referencing pretend dinosaurs was dumb, but Raptors referencing birds of prey that will rip your face off is pretty sweet. Even so, my basic principle is that a team name should have something to do with local culture/history/geography/ecology (with a carve-out exception for old-timey names, so 'Red Sox' gets a pass). Raptors, while cool, have nothing in particular to do with Toronto.
(Some interesting philosophical questions about whether a team has "changed" its name simply by changing the referent implied by the logo, etc....)

I will hear no slander on the Raptors because they brought us this:
Guardians seems bland and makes me think of insurance but at least there is a local tie.

Booooo. So bland and indistinct. Okay, I'm going full 180 on this, because it turns out these Guardian statues are freaking awesome.
Now my only disappointment is that they didn't do something better with the logo. Such potential here to go all in on the art deco theme...

OK, I tried to make sense of this and came up with...nothing.
Rays trade Dick Mountain for a reliever who will probably stay on the IL for the rest of the season (and is a free agent after that) and an unranked 4th round pick from 2020.
The Rays have Archer and Anderson coming back from the DL, so they may have just traded surplus, but the return feels VERY light. Do they take on Hunters salary aswell?
Just your average Rays trade i guess...

Maybe Hill is one of those sticky stuff guys whose curveball isn't spinning as much? The Rays like their 3 true outcomes utility guys.

The prospect they're getting looks like he's not worth anything.
I guess they were just gonna cut Rich Hill, a curveball pitcher with awful results since the sticky stuff enforcement. This is a little better than cutting him.

Is Hunter really just salary relief for the Mets? And if so, why? They are 10m$+ under the tax threshold, maybe they play to take one more salary soon?

The Rich Hill trade does make it more likely to me that we see Richards traded for a bag of baseballs and like, 800k in salary relief.
