At least the game wasn’t 4 hours long

Part of me wonders if it's a bad thing to get matched up against the Orioles right out of the gates. It looks like they expected it to be easy series and are sleepwalking

Fingers crossed that after about 20 years the Red Sox have drafted, groomed and developed a solid starting pitcher.

The marginal fans are gone until this team reaches .530.
Maybe .550

If you are gonna stink this much, at least stink so we get the #1 pick this time.

I’m not really worried about the offense, but the defense is just so bad and the pitching won’t stay this good. Really I think I’ll be mostly rooting for the young guys to hit and some guys to get hot enough to be an expensive rental come deadline time.

what an uninspiring start to the season. they will obviously play better during the year, but this looks and feels bad. I suppose its still early, but it appears it is now two seasons in a row (2019 & 2021) that Alex Cora has not had the team ready to start the season.

Pitching looks pretty good at least
I don’t expect the bats to continue to be a weak point so hopefully they turn around shortly and give us a reason not to take a midgame nap

I love seeming the 80 - 88 win predictions made during spring training drop to ~70 in this thread after two games.
It’s a long season. Going to wait before passing judgement.

This is what I've been saying all along. They are fighting for third best in the AL east if they are lucky. yes...you have been saying that...which is your right...but it doesn't mean anything until the games are played. My comment is meant to be superficial. We don't know yet, how it will play out. I'll see ya at the finish line. It's going to be a long painful season for the optimists on the board.

Well, hell...they led the Grapefruit in numerous offensive categories...so they appeared primed. Cold weather, wind blowing in, new ball, sluggers rather than hitters....better pitching against...probably about right. Don't despair! Wait 'til July!! We'll have some 14-10 games.

What is the question if the answer is “Matt Harvey is better”?

I welcome all opinions on this website. Is it really about optimism ? We all want the same thing and we have been so fortunate over the last 20 years. Most of this is gravy, for me, given i have been a fan since the mid 70's and suffered immeasurably for decades. It is frustrating to see this start and I am watching Bloom and company with a raised eyebrow, I can assure you of that. However, the journey of 162 games begins with 1 pitch. I will rooting for the boys through thick and thin (and it is real thin right now....LOL)

Ball is not carrying at all Too bad the Red Sox have so many early season games at home in the cold weather! Seems to me the players are at least in part affected by the cold and the ball is “not carrying” also. When the weather warms, the ball starts carrying better, and teams start to score more runs will the pitching hold its own?

If it is dead-dead, it is not a great year to build a team around low OBP, high power guys.

left side of the infield may be a defensive issue this year Why would we expect Devers to turn into Mike Schmidt? X will be X, which is to say that he is usually OK but has not really been a Gold Glove contender. And for my money, Sox need to find a way to move Devers off 3B. Next year Casas to 1b Dalbec to 3b Devers to DH Wonder what it would take to get Kris Bryant?

Weather is a big problem in Boston where the batting averages suffer due to being less limber in the cold. there is a big solution to this problem, but no one will accept it....The Fenway Dome. the park is too iconic to solve the problem this way.

On the Orioles broadcast yesterday they talked about this. Jim Palmer was very surprised when the play by play guy told him that the new ball would not be used until opening day. They speculated that MLB wanted to use up the supply of last year’s ball in ST.
In any case it’s about as stupid a decision as could be made. “Let’s change the most fundamental piece of equipment in our sport. Let’s have six weeks of practice and fake games. Let’s not use the new piece of equipment until the new season starts.”
Seriously, they’ve got some intellectually challenged people who run this game.
