One thing about his curve that was a bit weird: he seems to expose his hand as he brings it back, and his finger is clearly straight out... can’t hitters pick that up? (Obviously seemed not tonight, but I wonder if that might ever be an issue). Great question!
I'm pretty sure that the finger off the ball isn't visible in time to react to it consciously. I mean, if you're guessing curveball, it'll help you a little bit because you see it fractionally before you see the curveball spin. But I'm not sure that a hitter can focus on something like that successfully and not mess themselves up. Pitch recognition is best done unconsciously. That's why guys spend years in the minors. It's also why so many catchers bloom late as hitters--they are seeing way more pitches than everyone else, and even though they're seeing them from a different eye level than they would while hitting, eventually the brain improves the learned translation between visible spin and resulting movement.
So then it comes down to reacting unconsciously, via procedural ("muscle") memory. In theory, guys who have seen Richards a lot would start to pick up the curve unusually quickly. A guy who had a curve like that who played 3 or 4 years in a division might lose an edge over the hitters in the division who had seen him 4 times a year on average ... but then you just throw that pitch less often to those handful of guys!
I would think most guys who are successful at pitch recognition pay more close attention to seam rotation to identify breaking pitches, unless a pitcher is unconsciously tipping his pitches with other mannerisms or changes in his setup. Especially now-a-days where pitchers are trying to tunnel their motions to provide more deception. It makes modern pitchers a little more anti-septic than say the days of Tiant and guys who would look different pitch to pitch dependent on what they were throwing, but players have so much more access to video and study it so much more methodically for advantages that very few guys (outside of maybe Cueto) can get away with varying their windup drastically pitch to pitch.

Lindor’s contract is obviously too much for him strictly as a player, good as he may be. But it was never really about matching money to WAR or whatever. This is the Mets, for god’s sake, team two in NY, coming out of a period of miserable ownership. They had to make an immediate headline that said “we will now spend.” So Lindor was as much about PR, getting a new face of the franchise, etc. The gamble is as much that he’ll be beloved as he’ll be great. That said, if he is not great, he probably will not be beloved....

My life was so much more peaceful when I blocked [unnamed poster who is no longer on the board]. The zen is worth it, but know you'll still see what they wrote when people reply to them, so you still gotta skip.

Serious question: de Grom has to have an off day sometime, no? His off day is probably 10 Ks with 2 BBs.

If you ignore the losses in the win-loss record (which include what we'll euphemistically call Wilpon wins), Degrom is the best pitcher of his generation. The numbers have gotten silly, probably a refection of his newfound ability to regularly top 100+ on his fastball. The Sox have their work cutout for them, but we can all sit back and enjoy true excellence regardless of what happens.

Now that it is on video and obvious you can expect hitters to be looking for it. It was pronounce so hopefully he can get that finger down a bit. Also it was back behind his head in a way that it would be visible to the hitter. That's what it looked like from the angle I saw.

He is certainly blowing a way the conundrum of giving long term contracts to 30 year old pitchers and them not earning it. Not many like him and to think he didn't pitch in the majors til he was 26. That should motivate the late bloomers out there.

Is there any word or rumor that Garrett Richards was using pine tar? I found it to be a very odd comment that Jimmy Stewart on 98.5 made at the show's closing with Mazz playing up his comments before starting the baseball reporters.
Seems kind of weak to just accuse a guy of cheating just because he had a good game.

Not even beating around the bush, literally just accusing him.

100 mph with unreal command, perfectly on the black. Wow. You have to admire excellence when you see it

It appears Bush may have been so occupied with Richards that Pivetta got pushed to next week’s schedule.

Man, the only thing I hate more than a lead-off walk is back-to-back walks to start the game.

Oy. Pivetta does *not* need a small zone.

Pivetta is pretty damn lucky to have a 3.38 ERA right now.

Nobody walks the tightrope like Nick Pivetta!
Mr. Whitlock will almost certainly be making an appearance tonight.

Pivetta is pretty damn lucky to have a 3.38 ERA right now. At the same time he’s kind of unlucky it’s that high. Gave up that 3 run homer in his last inning of that blowout against the O’s and gave up that 2 run double the other night to break up the no-no in the 6th.
