I have never in all my life seen so many swings and misses on 91mph fastballs.

Don't think Chavis is on the 40 man roster through the year.

It is shocking to see Chavis swing at every single high fastball out of the zone. Why would ANY pitcher at ANY level give him anything else? He could be a special player if he laid off that one pitch. Infuriating

3 RBIs on base hits of 67 and 68 mph. That's tough luck The first RBI was 91.9. But all three were legit "weak hits," with xBA's of .660, .950, .870, so at Statcast, in terms of xwOBA and xERA, they will be indistinguishable from rockets. That's why I invented pERA, but the new baseball broke the formula. On the off-day I think I'll try to get new coefficients for it based on just this year's data. Yeah, I guess the question would be whether there's a skill element to preventing "legit weak hits." Related: does limiting hard contact make a pitcher more susceptible to bloop hits?

Absolutely nothing has changed with Chavis since day 1. He’s fully capable of running into pitches and hitting them a long way but if the pitcher just continues to throw it above the zone we’ll keep seeing the same thing.

I'm just super amped to see Chavis hitting lead off who has 9 strike outs in 22 at bats (and no walks) before today while hitting a robust. 227.
I would rather have seen Xander hit 2nd, but whatever.
Why does Cora keep putting utility players in the leadoff role? It's infuriating.

25% of the way through the season. The Red Sox have the best record in baseball. I think Alex Cora is doing a fine job as manager, and with that level of success, it is hard to questions his line up choices.

Cora is faced with the problem that there are only four legitimate hitters on the roster and he wants them to hit 2 to 5. As the result, he is forced to try someone ill suited for the role. My hope is for Duran to get his chance sooner than later.

This is SSS and anecdotal and subjective, etc. etc., but it seems to me Chavis has looked better since the second half of last season at making contact on high strikes *within* the zone. And it doesn't seem like inconceivable that he could simply learn not to swing on balls above the zone. He's still not yet 26, and a month younger than Dalbec.

Fwiw. NESN blocked here in soCal. Watching Angels broadcasts. Both Angels announcers told stories of making time on days off to take in games in the seats at Fenway, as fans, and loving it; discussing how the history of the game washes over you; and what a uniquely intimate, wonderful fan experience.
One even took a between series day off to come up from Philly, loved The Fenway experience, and made it back to Philly just in time to announce the game. We Sox fans are lucky. Another good Red Sox team winning another series while playing in baseball’s historic Cathedral. Go Sox.
Edit: forgot to specify Fenway, which they consider a bucket list type of destination. Cathedrals are impressive and the city of Boston has two

I would rather high strike out, low batting average guys who literally have zero walks to not get the maximum possible number of at bats. Hit the top 4 1-4 and figure out 5-9.

I’ve decided I could be the next great innovator in the Madden model. Bases loaded, tied, bottom 9? Don’t walk Devers. Otherwise? AWD.

Lololol. Though they may look similar, these are not the 2020 Sox. Fighters all. Arauz, Chavis, RAFFY, Martinez. Good team.
