Referring to any baseball player as MLB "property" is not accurate and it's not okay. Duran and Casas have contracts to play baseball for the Boston Red Sox. They have a choice to play baseball as a professional or not. But they are not anyone's property. Language matters.

Looks like Raynel Espinal was given permission to join the Dominican team in further qualifiers in July.

Looks like Raynel Espinal was given permission to join the Dominican team in further qualifiers in July. This makes me think the standard must be that if a guy isn't on the 40-man, the club better have a damn good reason to block him from playing, if it's not that they're prohibited from doing so at all. Having one of the AAA starters go when they have the injury problems at that level that they have is rough.

Johan Mieses and Raynel Espinal left Worcester this morning to play for the Dominican team in next week's last chance qualifier.
EDIT: Roldani Baldwin as well

Mieses went deep today in DR's warm-up against Mexico.
De Jesus not on the VZ roster this time. Mosqueda looks like he's an alternate of some kind (and I think he might've been last time, because he left late for Florida).

Mieses has homered in both of DR's official games now. Good grief he's on a tear this season. Baldwin started last night and doubled in a pair.

DR beat VZ to move on to Tokyo. Add Mieses, Espinal, and Baldwin to the list of players who may or may not play in the Games. Mieses especially after his performance this week.

Hello all, Long time, first time. I think Duran is going to Tokyo and I think it's the right move. It seems clear that despite his batting stats vs. about four AAA teams' pitchers, he is still a work in progress overall. So the options are: a) let him go to Tokyo for a once in a lifetime experience; b) call him up to play sparingly for Boston; or c) leave him to continue developing in Worcester. Option (c) seems cruel and unusual when option (a) exists. Option (b) seems less likely with each Michael Chavis call-up and there are also alternatives in the form of Franchy and Marcus Wilson. Option (a) could actually bring him back on an emotional high that could lead to special things the rest of the year that even option (b) might not produce. I also believe that Chaim Bloom is a guy who sees value in the kind of intangible rewards described for option (a), particularly when option (b) is not a slam dunk.

Apparently Jack Lopez is going to play for Team USA in the Olympics as well (Lopez posted this on his own IG, which seems to confirm).

So much for the Duran to the Olympics excuse for not calling Duran up. As for Wilson, how can he be preferred to Duran? Franchy could make sense, esp as a LH 1B alternative to Bobby. But to even suggest that Duran continue to stay down with Wilson coming up is beyond an insult to Duran. Which brings me to this. There is still time to bring Duran up what with the trade deadline and several continuing dysfunctional roster pieces. Yet I begin to wonder if he is trade fodder in the eyes of those who believe that Duran is as yet unready for a place in the bigs.

They've now announced that there will be no spectators at Olympic events. Yeah, there was a lot of pressure to suppress attendance before the most recent surge. The Delta variant is considerably more transmissible than previous editions. Taiwan - as one example - has a significant problem. That's largely because they were so successful in keeping deaths down. Probably as a result their vaccination rate is very low, something like 4%. Epidemiologists are worried that there could be surges in places where the vaccine has yet to be widely distributed. Even here in the States, we have regions where vaccination rates are hovering around 30%. Until such a time as the probability of running into someone who's a carrier is greatly reduced, there's still the risk of an outbreak.

Mieses, Reyes, and Baldwin will be on the DR team.
Nobody on the Israel, Japan, or Korea rosters.
So to recap: Worcester - Mieses, Lopez Portland - Casas, Meneses, Baldwin, Reyes

The idea was that Franchy and Wilson would be available if Duran went to Tokyo. I certainly hope that Duran gets called up now because if the Sox quibbling kept him from the Olympics (and the legendary Olympic Village pick-up scene) and then he doesn't get the call, I would forgive him for being completely pissed.

Casas with a 2-run bomb to start the scoring yesterday in the 4-2 win against South Korea to advance to the next round. They'll be playing Tuesday against Japan, and they're assured of no less than a bronze.

I know the HR numbers have been a little lacking this year for Casas but I love how easy the power looks so often. I think as he refines his approach and rounds out as a hitter, that all-fields power will shine. Hope he gets there!
