The power has come raging back in the last month though. A few homers with Portland before this very good showing with Team USA. Worked a nice AB against Tanaka too... Arrow up!

why not bring him up after the olympics (if he hits when he comes back and if schwarber isn’t playing first)

why not bring him up after the olympics (if he hits when he comes back and if schwarber isn’t playing first) The jump from AAA to the majors is larger than ever and top prospects are really struggling (Franco, Kellenic, Duran). There’s no way (and no reason) they’ll have Casas skip AAA, especially when he has less than 200 ABs above Low-A. He basically skipped High-A, they’re not going to have him skip AAA too. Also, the level of competition in the Olympics isn’t close to what he’d see in the majors.

Maybe I'm off base but his home runs in the Olympics are certainly putting to bed any notion of where's his power. I really didn't have any concerns before though.

I'd think the Japanese team, if nothing else, would be tougher than any AA team. Maybe Korea and the DR, too?

Casas with another 2 run jack and Scott Kazmir(!) led the US to a victory against the DR. From the Times:

The brass has thrown around the idea of whether they might just send Casas right to Worcester when he comes back (and that's not to say it hasn't been discussed here). Personally, I think no, but it also wouldn't be surprising.
Don't get me wrong, Josh Ock is a great dude and I hope he gets a cup with someone, and he's done a tremendous job improving against LHP this year, but he ain't blocking Casas and I would want Reed continuing to get everyday reps too.
(By the way, I'd suggest folks use names at least once in their posts or use the quote function - I think some people are referring to Mieses, others Casas, and it's not clear.)
Anyway, U.S. with the win, they play Korea tomorrow (tonight?). Winner gets Japan in the gold medal game, loser gets DR in the bronze game.

I am starting to wonder if Casas is a guy who plays better when the bright lights are on. I would try him at AAA when the Olympics[ics are over if I were the Sox just to see if he can handle it.

Could just be the difference in the venue. He went to Tokyo to take part in games that have an endpoint - the medals. When he's in the system it's about getting better, honing skills and gaining an approach. Maybe he's just goal-oriented.

Right, but his point is that it's not necessarily a safe assumption that he's going to perform better than whoever they have in MLB. Bogaerts was either the first- or second-ranked prospect in baseball (Oscar Taveras might've been #1, RIP) when he came up and was hitting .284/.369/.453 in Triple-A after hitting .311/.407/.502 in his second look at Portland (he'd been promoted there the prior year). We were debating putting the equivalent of a 7 for his projection at that point and even may have. Him coming up in 2013 really isn't a comp for Casas. Similarly Devers hit .300/.369/.575 in Portland before a cup of coffee in Pawtucket before he came up in 2017. Casas is hitting .271/.354/.424 in his first look at Portland after literally not playing last season. I think it's fair to say that asking him to come up to Boston right now is asking a LOT more than they asked of Bogaerts in '14 or Devers in '17.

Why add him to the 40-man earlier than necessary.
Why mess with his development, which has been incredible. You could really screw up a young talent that way

Especially when they haven't even given their trade acquisition a chance yet

Especially when they haven't even given their trade acquisition a chance yet the whole thing was contingent on schwarber only playing left field. as for his service time, he’s going to be up next year- his recent adjustments should prove he’s ready for bigger challenges soon

This is the Olympics thread. Let’s not rehash the trade deadline discussion here.

Gold medal game is tomorrow against Japan. I have no doubt that Tanaka will see some action. Should be something for all of them to remember.
