I'm now thinking Bs should resign Reilly for the 3rd Pair AND get a top 4 LHD. Not sure about this as I think he is going to be asking for a lot for a 3rd pair, don't get me wrong I liked what I saw this year. But do the B's need another guy whose strength is puck moving and outlet passes or a defense first tough guy? To get both costs money and is a 1st or 2nd line guy. What is more important on your 3rd pair. It all comes down to the money I guess. That's why the above surprised me. If DK is coming back it doesn't leave a lot for the D or is there? 2.6 million for a guy who has shown flashes but hasn't played in 2 years. They must see a really high ceiling for him.

That's kind of infuriating. I didn't expect a major overhaul or anything this offseason. The nucleus is there, with a short window. Giving Krejci, Hall and Smith a year to show what a real 2nd line they can is something I want to see. However, I wanted to see some kind of aggressive moves to go for it for a couple years. Handing almost 5 mil to Ritchie and Kase really undercuts any chance for that. It really feels like a FO that's just thinking "we're fine, we'll do a minor tweak or two and we're good enough", which is a little demoralizing.

All I can say is I think they feel the same way as you and I, and they just have a lot more faith in those players than we do. I have to have faith in them that they know what they are doing more so than me. But on the surface it does suck and it is head scratching to say the least.

They better have something planned for Kase because qualifying him at his number is unacceptable

I have a question that we can all consider a poll as to just how far the B's should be willing to go for the cup run window of the next 2 years. Admittedly 2 years might be asking a lot out of the core but it is reasonable I think.
Would you be willing to throw this years #1 at 21 in to the mix on a trade before the draft?
Myself I would be.

The situation feels like a GM traded for two guys a bit over a year ago and now is holding onto them because he can't accept he might have been wrong about them. Though, ironically, Ritchie has outplayed Heinen and the Kase deal rid us of Backes' contract, so he'd be at least somewhat justified in considering those deals wins.

Yes. But I'd be shocked if they do. They seemed pretty adamant at the deadline this year that they needed to keep their 1 and start rebuilding the system.

And Conor Garland is off the market. He seemed like an interesting option, too. Oh well.

Some feel Boston is close on Christian Dvorak. Others say Krejci could ne announced soon. Doubt they are both happening.

An article I read yesterday or the day before suggested they might be getting Dvorak to play with Hall. It doesn't sound like they think it would be a huge cap hit. Would be nice to have some depth for that top 6, Smith slides down and builds some chemistry with Coyle while all are healthy, but then can easily slot into that second line if a wing needs a night off. Love the pick. That type of player is so needed on this team. Also do not understand the Ritchie or Kase moves. feels really out of left field to me. Chance to free up a good chunk of money for a Defensive upgrade--which is needed--and we leave the money stuck in those two guys.

The plan could be to use Kase as a LTIR stash… in that case his contract comes off the cap so they can add during the season and maybe he’s back late in the year. It’s how the Lightning were able to go over the cap last year.

However, we gave the QO to Ritchie, so I doubt that's the plan. With them saying Krejci has no timeline for a decision, I'd say the thinking is more that Dvorak's a back-up option for him who provides some versatility if DK comes back.

It’s how the Lightning were able to go over the cap last year. Seems unlikely that that could be the plan. He had some vague "upper body injury" that seemed like it only put him out of commission because the season was almost over and he didn't have time to get up to speed. I don't think you could be planning on that injury putting him on the IR for most of the season. There was also talk that the QO means a two-way deal which would pay him a lower salary when he's in the minors. But I don't see signing a guy like that to play in Providence, either. The Occam's razor explanation is that Sweeney dealt for him and doesn't want to give up on him before Kase proves him right for doing so.

Not sure I'm liking the "top 2" LHD options (only putting it that way bc it's the only names we seem to be hearing so far) for Boston right now.
I just don't see Yandle as the right fit. Still fine on the PP but that's what he is. A PP specialist and we need 2 LHD that can man the kill while taking Top 4 minutes.
Meanwhile, Suter seemingly is having a tough time agreeing with teams on term and the speculation is that he might want/get 4 yrs. Not sure that's the right play either.

To think that Sweeney is that bad at his job when he has done nothing to deserve that kind of criticism. Sorry but you are wrong. Sweeney has done a good job and doesn't deserve that kind of hyperbole. The team just believes that his upside is worth the cost of keeping him.

There’s Derek Forbort scuttlebutt from Friedman
I’d like him. Good replacement for Lauzon in terms of getting a guy that will block shots and play big PK minutes

I'd take him and then, hopefully, still find another top 4 LHD.
TBD/McAvoy Grz/Carlo Forbort/Clifton
Zboril/Vaak/Etc RHD TBD

He certainly has a chance to be worth that, yet it's also very risky. How good is Sweeney? He certainly has done some good things, yet he's also done some bad things. Like he finally nails a good value draft after so many reaches for years that have killed our system. He's signed some very good deals, yet also so head scratchers.

Their are 2 sides and it is risky, personally I don't like it but I don't pretend to know more than the GM. But when you say he is making the decision based on not wanting to be wrong about a player or the need to prove he is right that is what I disagree with. That kind of thinking would make him a bad GM which he is not. Sure he hasn't won every trade that is impossible to do. Take a look at the contracts he has signed players to, that is where he has done a great job. How many guys are signed to team friendly deals. How many signings turned out bad. How much dead money is there. He has won GM of the yr. He consistently puts together strong teams. In my book he gets an A and the idea that he can't accept being wrong about a player is demeaning. Fact is you can't forecast injuries so the jury is out on the player. It is simply a matter of them thinking his upside on a 2way deal is worth the risk.

Anyone can say at a later time that was a bad trade/signing and blame someone for that but at that point where you make a decision it is not too obvious. And I agree that he is (overall) a really good GM.
