Prediction for today's game. Cole gets shelled. Doesn't make it out of the 3rd and breaks his hand punching the dugout wall. Rodziguez with the complete game no hitter. It's nice to have dreams.

Yeah Marwin and Santana in particular need to be upgraded and that can be done pretty easily. At least Kiké can play CF defense.
Whats the ETA on Duran?

Anyway, as many quibbles as I have, feels a tad petty to grouse about the 8-9 batters as the Sox go for the sweep against the Yankees and potentially move back into first place.

Big game for E-Rod. He has to stop nibbling 3-2 to every hitters and stop giving up hits by the dozens up 2 strikes. His 10K+/9 is excellent. We need results.

I donât think playing Santana over Dalbec constitutes a âwhite flagâ lineup when you literally have all your best hitters in the lineup Marwin + Santana + Kiké in the same line-up = White Flag. Basically batting two pitchers in Marwin and Santana. And nice to see Kikè can go 2-17 in his last several games and return right back to the leadoff spot! Duran is an upgrade over at least 3 guys in today’s lineup. The Red Sox have the worst leadoff production in MLB and the best leadoff prospect in baseball. So, of course, Duran stays down. It’s really starting to make me crazy.

Part of that complete game no hitter includes Erod walking the first 2 batters and the Yankees hitting into triple plays each inning!

I don’t think anyone on this board needs to see Dalbec and Chavis flail away against Cole today. May as well roll the dice that today is the day Santana chips in. And Marwin seems to relish the big spot. Maybe he can help out today, too. Other than Kikè at the top, the lineup makes some sense.

Erod only has 1 “quality start” in his last 10 starts. And a quality start probably doesn’t help much against a Cole anyway. Just another lost year for Erod, so far. I hope it’s not too late for him, but expect the worst at this point.

I don't think it is a white flag lineup. I could see Cole having a field day throwing fastballs up in the zone to Chavis and Dalbec and watching them flailing away. With Kiké' and Gonzo it might not be so bad. I hope that Cole thinks he has to be the stopper and overthrows today. He can be prone to that.

That's part of the problem, in my opinion. Kiké is kind of a super utility player but he's no Ben Zobrist, and he shouldn't be a starter he should be a fill-in three times a week guy and maybe a late-inning defensive replacement. But he's no solution. They need a legit CF (or LF and move Verdugo back to CF). I had a significant problem with the way Bloom built this team in the off-season. A lot of people loved the versatility, but this is not the NL Central. On a AL team they should carry one utility guy, a 4th OF and a back-up catcher and have legit players at all the other positions. To carry three utility players, two of whom live below the Mendoza line, is ill-advised and becomes outright stupid when the manager feels compelled to use them more than one at a time once or twice a week. If Bloom was planning on being a 4th place team and building for the future this works. But to his credit he either inadvertently (a lá Cherington) built a contender or a combination of luck and three guys having career years have pushed this team into contention. Whatever the case the game is about adjusting or falling behind. Bloom needs to make a few adjustments unless he and Henry plan to just show face in the playoff race. There's a sharp cliff after Houston, Tampa and Toronto offensively. Then there's Chicago, the Red Sox and Oakland. I know it's more than offense, but the Sox defense and baserunning certainly hasn't been stellar either. If this is about winning - and in baseball those chances at the playoffs are finite and fleeting - then Bloom has to adjust. First adjustment should be bring up Duran or Franchy and play them virtually every day for 2-3 weeks to see if either can cut it. If not, go get a lead-off hitter who's either an OF, or someone like Ketel Marte who's a legit hitter AND can play more than one position AND has significant service time remaining. A left-handed first-baseman would also be appreciated unless Dalbec can continue being short to the ball. Also, trade off (or in the case of Santana release) the chaff. Keep one of Kiké or Marwin and use AAA for back-up if someone goes down. Or be happy to be also-rans and delude yourselves that this will be a repeat division-winning team somewhere down the road. I agree, and I didn’t like the majority of the off-season either. But that doesn’t mean *Cora* is waving the white flag…. he’s doing what he can with what he has. Whether Kiké *ought* to be the starting CF is not the same as saying Cora has better options today. Cora can’t call up Duran. No but he can play Dalbec and Chavis over Marwin and Santana.

For what purpose? To strike out on high fastballs? Santana and Marwin are awful but for today's game it makes sense. Either way they're awful options to choose from.

To be clear, I’m grousing about the 8-9 & 9A (AKA lead-off) batters, and at least two of them being on the team at all at this point.
