the 2-0 slider was the one. Tough loss, but they kept battling. The worm will turn. Nite all !!

The entire team has fallen off a cliff.

Kind of amazing how quickly my feelings not his team flipped. A week or so ago, I was to the point of basically always expecting a comeback win. Tonight, I didn't really want to turn the game on, and once I saw we were down 2-0, thought "oh well, a sweep"

We’ll be fine, just need to take care of business with DET Detroit got off to an 8-19 start but is four games over .500 since then. They're not awful.

Sometimes you lose close games to other good teams. It’s not that big a deal guys. 2 months left. They’ve got major reinforcements coming. Relaxxxxxxx everybody

This series really isn’t a surprise - the Red Sox have crumbled all year against quality competition.

the bad news: we just got swept and looked hapless doing it. The good news: Detroit is up and they suck. Time to get our mojo back

Listening to the game on the radio (WEEI) - talking about how the 9th inning was a microcosm of their issues - roster issues (Duran the best option to pinch hit - he clearly isn't ready). Cora managed this game well - the pitching staff - but right now, it is the offense that is the problem (well, and the starting pitching - which will eventually burn out the pen arms). With the exception of a few games, they've not hit well at all - especially clutch hitting - in the second half.

It wasn't that long ago the Sox were up 4.5 games over Tampa. And they've blown that lead and have lost 6 games in the standings.
Now they are down to a 5.5 game lead over the Yankees. I think they'll finish ahead of them but I wouldn't bet my life on that. A week ago I wouldn't have had that thought.

This series really isn’t a surprise - the Red Sox have crumbled all year against quality competition. The Red Sox are 34-26 versus >.500 teams. That’s best in the division and second best in the AL (behind only HOU).

JDM looks like a declining player. On top of last year's lousy year, he's just decent, not great, this year. And that's with a .336 BABIP. He scorched in April with an OPS of 1.175 but that was driven by a .387 BABIP.
I have to think CB would love for him to opt out after this year, though there seems to be uncertainty on this board about whether he can. Worst case scenario is that we have to wait until after the '22 season to lose his $22M AAV.

Sometimes you luck out and get a day off at exactly the right time. This team looks like it needs tomorrow off...

3-18 RISP in the series, which included the Sox scoring 5 runs in one game. That’ll do it.

Tonight, I didn't really want to turn the game on, and once I saw we were down 2-0, thought "oh well, a sweep" Well they came a few degrees of launch angle on JD's bloop from tying it in the bottom of the 9th, so apparently the team doesn't become as defeatist as you do after 3 games that don't go their way. So that's the good news!
And speaking of luck, what was the difference in the game? A two-out walk followed by a homer that barely got out. One of the pitches that led to the walk was an obvious strike that was called a ball, and another one was borderline. In Lowe's home run AB, one obvious strike and another very obvious strike were called balls. Those runs were completely gifted by the umpire and that was the difference in the game.

So… do we get points for that? Things are fine, the Sox are in a good position. But it is also understandable people are a bit gloomy. This was a demoralizing trade deadline and sweep lumped on top of each other. Not fun.

The Raffy GIDP on a first-pitch swing after a leadoff single stands out to me as a key play, too.

This was a demoralizing trade deadline and sweep lumped on top of each other. Not fun. No, manfred, which is why I didn't say anything like that they should have gotten points for that. It's just that they had bad luck, as they have had for the last few games, in the BABIP and sequencing departments. On balance they've had more good luck than bad. Just not the last few days.
I continue to find it weird that people think that trade deadline was demoralizing. (And I didn't realize you were one of them!) Here's a prediction: Schwarber will help the offense and Sale will help the pitching and the Red Sox will have added more talent than any team in the division. It's coming after a 10-day delay, which feels like an excruciatingly long wait at the moment, but I suspect the mood will perk up.

When they start awarding championships based on advanced stats, perceptions, good or bad luck, umpire calls, and style points those of us to are realists and react to what we are seeing and hearing - and this is a Game Day thread, so emotions are allowed - will behave accordingly. The ONLY thing that counts at the end of the game - who won, and who lost. And - this is our first four game losing streak. Overall records are fine, but it is all about what they are doing lately that count.

I didn’t find it demoralizing. It was a bit of a bummer for me just from the shiny-new-toy standpoint, but I got the non-moves. And if Schwarber is back soon, that is a very good get (and what I view as a very low price). But I don’t think people who were demoralized are off base, if that makes sense. I’m not one of them, but I don’t view it as right/wrong, because a lot of it is just a feeling. I would have loved Scherzer, though!!
