What a deflating deadline. John Henry, this is not how you maintain consumer interest. I will continue to repeat myself. Name a pitcher or player that was traded today and the package that would have beat what they went for. I will wait. The Red Sox could have had any pitcher they wanted if they decided to trade Casas, Downs, or Hauck. I get why they didn't do it but the team could have gotten a Gibson, Maeda, Pineda type. The fact is this year surprised everyone and Bloom would have liked to sell more assets for more prospects but it's almost August and the Red Sox are in first place which is amazing. Who knows if the Red Sox will be in this position next year or the year after that. They traded for a slugger who is hurt (2 weeks away) maybe they should have used Ramirez for a pitcher first. This deadline grade is undecided until the season is over. If they somehow win the division or make the playoffs it will be a bonus. Management decided protecting the future is more important than going after a championship this season. That logic as much as it hurts us as fans might be correct since the Astros, White Sox, Dodgers would all be favored over Boston in a playoff series then again the 2014 team wasn't highly thought of and they just won it all! Baseball is a funny sport it's about chemistry something magical maybe this team has it but it does hurt fans when other team's in your own division got a lot better and for the most part the Red Sox sat on their hands. We are assuming that either we are over valuing our prospects or maybe other teams don’t think highly of ours. I see both sides of it but right now the Red Sox might have the weakest starting pitchers in the AL East.

Good to see Devers with batting gloves on meaning if needed he could pinch-hit.

JD and Xander are in a pretty dreadful period where there just isn't a lot of hard contact - and lots of Ks. Very disappointing.

so the questions - where is the offense going to come from with Devers hurt and Schwarber hurt and JD and Xander slumping - and Kiké perhaps cooling off? (I think the team batting average since the all star break is in the .240 area). And - where is the pitching going to come from with ERod, Perez, Richards and Pivetta all struggling?
Yikes...

Hopefully Nate can be the stopper tomorrow but right now it's a tough time for the Red Sox.
1.) Devers with a hammy injury might be back tomorrow hopefully.
2.) Xander has been slowed down with a wrist injury not quite himself.
3.) JD is slumping something fierce right now 4-35
4.) Dalbec and Duran trying to cut teeth at the Pro Level
5.) The starting pitching minus Nate has been struggling
6.) Vazquez has regressed with his defense that is a concern also silly base running mistakes
7.) Average at best trade deadline
8.) 2B and 1B uncertainties
Positives:
1.) Still in first place
2.) Chris Sale is close to returning
3.) Added big power LH bat
4.) Whitlock and Houck have been sensational
5.) Barnes and the bullpen have been terrific
6.) Alex Cora managing and teams never say die attitude 33 come from behind wins
7.) Great Draft
8.) 10-3 vs. Spankees
9.) Best left side in Baseball with Xander and Rafa
10.) Outfield has been super defensively!
This team will fight on just need to take 2 out of 3 mentality in every series. Been a great year so far 63-42!

Between the struggling offense which is dealing with injuries between X and Devers and a rotation where only Eovaldi inspires any confidence, I wouldn't be surprised if they struggle and it costs them first place. If they don't win tomorrow's game I'd worry about them getting swept. Being a wild card is awesome, like nothing to lose when you have a underachieving 88 win season but being a wild card, in that 1 game crapshoot is scarier for the team that wins 95 games and finishes 2nd in the division. Hope somehow th he Sox can take the division and avoid the coin toss game.

Its a good team with lots of good players that is fun to watch. Reinforcements are on the way and the farm looks as good as it has in a few years. Win or loose the Red Sox made huge forward strides this season. The future looks bright.

Win or loose the Red Sox made huge forward strides this season. The future looks bright. When you step back it's been a great year. I'm not panicking. I'm calling it as I see it. It's hard to continue to play .600 ball when the rotation is struggling as bad as it has and they're finally dealing with injuries to key hitters in the lineup. When the team is in the heat of the pennant race it's easy to forget that I would have just been happy if they simply didnt suck. But they're beyond that point now. They've had a magical year where a lot of things have broken right. Now it's not about hoping they don't suck. Its about winning. Step back again and you realize that the farm is getting better but it's not where it needs to be yet and you also realize that arguably the Sox got the best player in the draft.

Richards. Perez has value next year due to his contract. Richards can safely be DFA-ed.

Wow, that’s bad news for him, on July 27th Peter Gammons said on MLB Network that the Rays expect Tyler Glasnow back for September
