It can happen on any pitch anyone ever makes to him. but truthfully, the potential for bad outcome was greater on that matchup than most. That has to be acknowledged.

I don't really know how you can blame a pitcher for giving up a home run off the end of his bat on a pitch that isn't a strike. It's just amazing hitting. Listening on the radio and they were talking about what a bad, hanging curveball that pitch was. He also still walked the 9 hitter which amplified the damage.

You know it's the Red Sox day when Richards only gives up 4 runs (3 ER) in 5 innings and Dalbec has 2 hits.

I suspect part of the reason for leaving him in is to get him to five innings and a possible win. That’s bad managing. Richards is losing his rotation spot soon enough and they need this game bad. I actually don’t think that’s it. He’s been doing it all year even when Richard isn’t in position to get them the win. In the past I had thought Cora was trying to send a "I'm the guy that matters and I still think you're a stud" kind of message.

Lots of two out runs today—we complain when they strand runners, so nice to see them driving them in.

They gotta send Bobby down after this… He's the king of amateur hour AB's with RISP. You were saying? Until there is a better option, Dalbec is the clear choice to play 1st against LHPs. You would rather have Franchy or Marwin against LHPs?

It was maybe an okay pitch but it wasn't great. On an 0-2 count in needs to be further out of the zone. And if Richards were a better pitcher he'd be making better-than-okay pitches when he had to.
And the whole point about the third-time-through-the-order thing is that the hitters get enough looks at the pitcher to get a feel for how he's throwing, the sequencing, the movement of his pitches, etc. And Vlad was apparently ready for that one.

The thing about the Vlad home run is that I don’t think they even had anyone warming until after the home run. If they want to let Richards start the inning and pull him once someone gets on, fine, but not only did they let him face Springer and Vlad with a man on, they let him pitch to Semien and Hernandez afterwards. Given the recent losses, this is not a “let him work through it” kind of game. It’s a “do everything you can to win the game” situation.

Just saw Bush make a call to the bullpen right after the home run and assumed that was to get someone warming.

I like Sawamura, but the combo of his tendency to give up homers and, well, the Jays… am a bit nervous about this.

It's baseball and any team is capable of beating any other on any given day. That's just how it works. Making any sort of blanket prediction, snide or otherwise, has a way of coming back on prognosticators. This one's not over yet in any case. Right now, it is, as jmei said, great that their driving in the baserunners this time around.

Are we blaming Richards for throwing a ball 3 inches below the strike zone that Vlad hit off the end of his bat? Or Cora for letting him pitch or not intentionally walking him?

Are Bradfo and Flemming off suicide watch with this game? They've been brutal to listen to all this weekend. I've turned them off a few times. I like them both individually, but that's a bad booth pairing on their own. (I'm watching this one since they've worn me out.)
