The number of players who have played both C and SS in any sustained and meaningful way in the last 70 years rounds to zero: www.mlb.com/news/isiah-kiner-falefa-catcher-to-shortstopCatcher is a unique position in that, even beyond the physical demands, you have to spend so much time working with pitchers and scouting opposing hitters in order to call a game. Picking up even one or two extra defensive positions is tough. Trying to cover more than that borders on impossible. I was a little surprised to find that Craig Biggio never played an inning at SS. I’m guessing that the number of players who have played C, 2B, and CF in any meaningful way over the last 70 years is probably 1?

Picking up even one or two extra defensive positions is tough. Trying to cover more than that borders on impossible. That piece says "[Moe] Berg, who also had a role as an American spy during World War II, came up as a shortstop and only became a catcher when White Sox manager Ray Schalk asked for volunteers in 1927 due to a cascade of injuries..." Berg was also very slow, at least later. One of the books about him quoted some general or such: "Do you know who that is? That's the slowest man in the American league."

Not just at setup (like Youkilis) but in the actual swing. Whose idea was it, what is the theory, has anyone else done it recently? Ellis Burks talked about it, but not in any depth. Does anyone have any insight here? I literally just went out and took a few things like that on my front lawn. Not as weird as I expected, but pretty weird. Seems tailored to hit the ball 200 feet.

Arauz is all of 22 years old. He's made it to AAA, is a good defende, and he's been a useful piece for thre Sox. If you didn't happen to see him crush one into the night last year, you might want to check that out. He has quite a few years to prove you dead wrong, and my money says he does that. . I had completely forgotten how young is the talented Arauz. So he actually came up at age 21?? What a good Rule 5 pickup for a still developing kid who might otherwise be in AA. Arauz turned 23 August 3. Still young and interesting. Strange that he had such a poor long start to the year in Worcester, after hitting .250 .325 .319 in the majors in the weirdness of 2020.

Hey! Varitek won the the Little League World Series as a SS and the World Series as a C! Actually Varitek was on the losing team and he made the final out. He played SS that day and made an error. I remember this from Game 4 of the 2004 World Series when FOX broadcast his little league story during the game.

His team did win, though only in the American bracket. I believe winning the American and International brackets still technically counts as winning the LLWS. Those winners play after that though, which is where his team lost.

Now Duran is back to hitting with his hands together. Until two strikes, when he moves them apart--and then strikes out swinging.

JD Martinez was so great for the first month+ of the season and has largely gone to sleep since.

Now Duran is back to hitting with his hands together. Until two strikes, when he moves them apart--and then strikes out swinging. We had a mini conversation about it somewhere, but I can't remember where. As far as the why, I suspect it mechanically forces more loft in his swing. If you mimic a swing in the air with your hands together like they'd be on a bat, and then move them a few inches apart, see how your wrist rotates differently? Hands apart also makes it a little harder to roll over your wrists.

snoozer of a game so far (if one likes hitting). Eovaldi looks good, but his pitch count is up.

Great bunt by Shaw, but WHY do it there? Swing the bat, baby! It’s the 7th inning.

Probably why you don’t bunt to get to Arauz and Duran
Credit to Shaw for doing something most players have lost the ability to do effectively though
