Hey let’s just get swept and have bottomed out expectations and surprise everyone? How I am attempting to reframe the issue. Will likely take until the morning though. Idk if I’ll even be able to play any of the show before bed, just thinking about baseball is likely to cause me pain.

I honestly think that having the opposing team facing my SP for the first time during the WC game while I’m facing their starter for the 7th time is bigger advantage in a winner takes it all game than the home field advantage. So Sale for 5, but then how do we fill out the last 4 innings? Christopher Allen Sale is a psychopath and he’ll go 7 innings lol Other than that Eovaldi has already pitched in relief 😉

Going into this series, our runs scored against the MFY averaged 3 runs per game in the second half. In our three losses, we scored exactly 3 runs each game.
So - we are consistent. There is that.

This team is going to give me a coronary before I turn 30. Let the Yankees get the wins out of their system before October

Gotta agree with those saying the heart of the order not producing with RISP. Not sure what the average is since the All Star break but I doubt it would make us proud.

What's going well? Sale, Pivetta, ERod pitching well. Kiké, Raffi, Dugie and Jose hitting pretty well. Last 6 games against two poor teams.
What's not? Starters not going long enough for the quality of the pen....Whitlock's and Taylor's injuries, and only Brasier (and Robles?) pitching well. JD, Xander not hitting well. Team poor in driving in runners. Some defensive woes continue.
This was a pretty miserable three game series. Gotta flush it and move on. Cora's got some things to ponder.

The secret to getting the bullpen fixed is that this bullpen exists outside the order of reason. The best guys are terrible; the worst guys are unhittable; wash-out starters are bullpen aces; the closers are mop-up guys. They gave up like 2 runs over the course of two weeks until the last couple of days. It's a roll of the dice cast by a trickster demon. Who the hell knows what'll happen.
But Whitlock would help.

Pretty similarly mediocre across our big 3 post-all star break
I really think not having an all-star break after the covid season and having all our guys go to and play in the all-star game screwed us

If or when the Red Sox make the playoffs that is a huge deal. They are ahead of where many of us thought they would be. With the farm system being built up and money coming off the books this team will be in good position to improve its talent base. Love Whitlock, Houck, Devers, Duran, etc team is moving in the right direction so as brutal as this weekend was the future is extremely bright. Bloom will keep adding young talent the team might surprise in the playoffs with Cora managing. Defense and Bullpen can be improved adding one more strong arm to the rotation and the Red Sox in a tremendous AL East (Jays and Rays are loaded) will be competing for a title. This year is completely unexpected. Go Sox!

One bit of hope is the Rays have Shane Baz and that will definitely make them tougher to deal with. Too bad they don’t have Glasnow

Just gotta flush it as many are saying. If we sneak in anything can happen I suppose but I’m going to try and focus on just enjoying this game I love so passionately the rest of the way and try to focus less on results. Others have covered these weaknesses and I won’t belabor it, but we are pretty clearly not a deep October team. That’s okay. Many experts put us at 75-80 wins. So anyway. Hopefully they give us some good, fun baseball games to close the year and we can move on (slightly) from this very sour taste.
I am worried they are going to limp the rest of the way even against two bad clubs. But here’s hoping they go 6-0 and give the MFYs hell in the wild card game.

Cora is now 26-31 vs TB and 24-33 vs the MFYs. Like his players he showed no life this weekend, his hunches all backfired on him and the fact that he didn't argue that BS call was weak. My biggest surprise of today's game was that he didn't rest 1/2 the team like he always does. He said the difference between 2018 and 2019 was our record vs these same 2 teams. So I will give TB and the MFYs credit, one took 1st place from us and the other took the wildcard. They didn't need to beat the Orioles or the Royals to knock us out of both spots (like we are going to need to do) They came here and punched us in the mouth and took it. Maybe our team was not better than TB, but I believe that we are better than the MFYs. Sad way to ruin our 7 game winning streak and probably our season too.

If we have to play the Yankees, I want the WC game to be at Yankee Stadium, that’s the only way to reverse this story and reverse ‘78. That and the fact we eliminated them in the Bronx in both ‘04 and ‘18.
I’m off to watch ‘04 highlights to put me to bed, starting with the despair after game 3 of the 2004 ALCS.

Been avoiding posting for a bit, but what have mostly seen from this team last 2 months? It's 1978 all over. 10g lead at the AS break and bye-bye. Dad and I were in box seats on 3b side of NY dugout side. Rainy like weather, did rain in one of the games that 4g september series vs them when Sox were swept out the door in the crucial series at home. Dismal play, lackluster looking team, rookie pitcher thrown out there 1 game (bobby sprowl) who had no biz being there for 1st game. That and this 3 gamer a lot alike.
Other old timers may also draw parallels between lackluster garbage played by both teams.

Lead off walks. What the hell is it with our staff and lead off walks? The trouble always begins with these.
Our hitters are not patient enough to work lead off walks. But theirs are!

I'm so glad I had a rock concert to go to rather than watching the Sox find yet another way to lose to the Yankees
I knew the Sox were getting swept tonight. It was obvious.
You can say it was Joe West or whatever but winning teams win and losing teams make excuses.
I was able to enjoy my evening because I was under the assumption that they'd find a way to lose and I didn't sneak peaks at my phone or TV to confirm it until we got home and everybody else went to sleep.
From the replays I saw, the Yankees gift wrapped 2 runs for the Sox in the 7th and instead of saying thank you very much and running with it, Richards walked the first 2 guys he faced because that's what Red Sox pitchers do against patient teams and he was bailed out by Vazquez's throw. So he gets a reprieve and still walks the next batter. You can blame Joe West, the guy who got the Dave Roberts SB call right and took away Altuve's HR in the 2018 ALCS, but I didn't think his calls were that egregious.
Then of course Richards gives up a double to the guy that we're thrilled the Sox didn't get because apparently the Sox are the only team he can hit and the Yankees are the only team Dalbec sucks against.
The Judge AB was the game. For the 2nd straight night Dalbec doesn't catch a foul pop that could have changed the inning. It's bizarre he's apparently not that familiar with his own home ballpark as far as territorial spacing goes.
So Judge gets reprieve 1 and then strikes out but Vazquez somehow drops the damn ball out of his glove on the transfer and everybody misses it? To me that could have been avoided if Vazquez was more careful with taking the damn ball out of his glove to not put them in that situation. Reprieve #2. The Sox regift the Yankees defensive miscues, Judge of course smokes the go ahead 2 run double and for the 2nd night in a row, Stanton, the guy who can't hit a curve ball to save his life, puts the lights out again with a long HR.
So the Sox have kindly put the Yankees into the driver's seat in the Wild Card instead of holding two 8th inning leads at home that would have placed them in jeopardy.
So now the Sox have to win 4 of 6 against bad teams on the road which they should do but if they split those six games they are in jeopardy of missing the playoffs or tying for the 2nd spot needing 2 wins to go to TB.
The Sox have made a mess of things and should be embarrassed for the loser way they have played the Yankees the past 2 series. You know Yankee fans are laughing at the Red Sox.
For me they have sucked the joy out of the season. If they blow both Wild Card spots I'm fine with it at this point. That would be preferable to losing the Wild Card game to the Yankees because I have no doubt regardless where they play they'd lose. The Yankees pitching is better. And it doesn't matter who starts because the Sox bullpen and defense would F up the game anyways and it's not like they score runs off their pitching anyways. If they did play each other this season would be remembered for the Sox winning the first 7 games against the Yankees and then when it really mattered and the Yankees were whole, losing the final 7 games against NY.
