Nothing in that game surprised me.
It's amazing how much wishful thinking on behalf of the Yankee mystique the media had. The end of a long season for one of the handful of best pitchers in the game, after a shortened season, and he's been hit very hard over his last five outings, and no one even says the Yankees may be in trouble here. Rather, the magical Yankee mystique will resurrect his body. MLB.com's position matchups had the SP edge to NY, and I can only characterize that as willfully delusional.

Did anyone else think about how the JD injury directly impacted this game for the better? If he were playing, Kiké might be at 2nd and there is no way anyone else makes that relay throw to get Judge at the plate. That was the game right there I posted this yesterday(or earlier today) that Schwarber and JDM are redundant and that I’d rather have Schwarber in there. I don’t want to see either of those guys in the field. This was their best formation defensively, for sure. And Schwarber at lead off really hurts the opposing managers’ abilities to play matchups. It’s a more balanced lineup and it’s as simple as giving your best hitter the most at-bats.

So happy for Bogey to get that knock. I met him when he was a rookie at the Sox Winter Weekend and spent a little time with him one night and he showed me pictures of his family and he was such a nice kid and very proud of his family. I really enjoyed my time with him.

Nice win for the Red Sox. I have enjoyed this season much better than last season. Win or lose against the Rays Thanks to Sox for making my summer.

Joe C and the radio guys are in utter shock that Cora is lifting Nate. Just getting caught up on the thread and surprised people didn't like the move to take Eovaldi out. I thought Cora did it at exactly the right moment. We know Eovaldi's third-through-the-order stats, right? We know Stanton was up, right? Can't blame Eovaldi for the Judge dribbler, but with a runner on that was the right move. And the great thing about having both Houck and Whitlock in the pen is the length it gives them; you really are good with just 5 IP from the starter. (I wonder if we see Barnes at all this postseason...)
But anyways, what a great game by Nate. He has been incredible in some huge moments for this team that will not soon be forgotten.

All this time I was mad at the Minnesota Twins for how they always lay down for the Yankees, and only now do I realize that the Yankees are our Minnesota Twins.

Really grateful for this ballclub. Think they deserve our respect and admiration at this point I think they have shown a lot of guts. I think we can take Tampa but if they don’t I’m just really happy still with this season. They made me smile a lot, beat the MFY, and made us proud. And have such a bright future.
All I can ask for is a ballclub that makes me smile and inspires me and they have done that this year. They will have a very fond place in my heart in terms of Red Sox squads. 2011 this isn’t.

"Relax. We've been playing these guys for 18 years. They're never gonna beat us."

Enjoyed the heck out of this game. Sat in RF Roof Box. Gunning down judge and the Bogaerts homer were my two favorite moments. Bullpen pitched insanely well.
Going forward, I think its pretty important we don’t give Bobby starts versus tough righties. Pretty clear to me that was the wrong move.

That was fun, the Sox ending up firing on all cylinders tonight - batting, starting pitching, bullpen, and fielding - and the Yankees showed some flaws. The Sox are a tough team to beat when they play like that.
On to Tampa.

Great game. Would have been a disaster if they lost to MFY.

Can we talk about the Zillion dollar man, Gerrit Cole, shitting the bed when the games matter the most? Beating him makes it even sweeter. He was awful. He can't pitch in Fenway in the playoffs. He sucked in 2018 too if I recall.

Man, this felt like winning the goll-danged world series.
Seriously, the Rays could sweep them and this will still easily be the fifth-best Red Sox season of the century.
Things that make it even sweeter:
1) Good lord, the announcers. I was stuck with the espn1 feed, and, my god... how is it possible for ARod to be in a broadcast booth and not be the biggest Yankee homer in it? They were both just obviously dejected as the Red Sox methodically built their lead. I normally roll my eyes at the conspiracy theorizing about Yankees getting favorable strike zone calls and whatnot, but this was just ridiculous.
2) Does Cora ever not completely run circles around Boone in the managing department? It's an amazing discrepancy between the two teams. I think every move by Cora - per usual, in the playoffs - was just about perfect. I probably would have tried to go another inning with Houck rather than Robles, but what do I know? Not as much as Cora.
3) And I don't know if this is also due to Cora or what, but the issues the offense has been having just disappeared in this game. The professional at-bats came back, the patience returned, everyone seemed to be playing to the situation. I definitely did not assume that would happen, but it's so awesome that it did, and a good sign for the rest of the playoffs (!!).
4) Heh heh Jays and Yankees traded away like half their farm systems. We got Schwarber for Aldo Ramirez. Who's still standing?

The reason why Xander's HR didn't surprise me is that I felt sure they would work on his swing on the off day, with a good chance of discovering what was wrong. And it just struck me how much of a load it takes off of everyone else if they indeed did that, and everyone heard the report. And/or he may have shown it in BP. Players struggle when they feel they have to do extra and thrive when they feel they just have to do their job. So a key hitter being messed up can lead to other hitters pressing. Getting 3 runs in 5 innings off of the Yankees bullpen (which has had Boone's non-Cora-quality management all year, so you can remove that from the equation) is, to my mind, way more telling than sending Cole to an early shower. Tampa will be taking us very seriously, far more than the clowns in the media. I do the scheduling for our film group, which has two other Sox diehards. I quote the next entry, from our emailed schedule: Yes, I included all playoff info! I thought the possibility of a conflict with a Sox game a week from tomorrow was low. Now I'm not so sure. We'll just have to beat them in four.

At this point we're going to have teenagers that would never have seen the Yankees even make the World Series.

Playing to the majority audience, plain and simple. What an amazing coincidence that Cole's season went downhill at the exact time he stopped going through his hair between every pitch.

Its the new Castellanos call for me How convenient that Mike Stanton watched it for a while. He must have been listening to the announcers. No chance for a double.
