Red Sox vs. Astros 2021 ALCS Gameday Thread

After the watch tapping the Sox in a game that was over, the Sox haven't won since. Look, you're trying to be logical with somebody who knows superstition isn't real, but is still superstitious in some ways. I mean if things are going bad when I watch a game, I try to find another chair to watch the game. If the Sox pitching does better when I don't watch I hide out for about 10 minutes. If they screw up when I take a leak like I did between the commercial break after the bottom of the 7th/beginning of the 8th inning and missed the first pitch, it's because of me Whitlock gave up that first pitch HR in the 8th. It was the one pitch of the game that I missed and I was pacing and "hiding" when Castro was batting and you see how that turned out. My bad. I should have stayed in the room instead of walking in and out. And players are highly superstitious as well. You remember Wade Boggs and Nomar and they're hardly alone. Is it because the Yankees blared their boombox in 2018 or because Bregman mouthed off about Eovaldi in 2018 that they lost? No, but it was bad karma. Same thing with the Rays and their stupid popcorn. I don't really believe in religion or blind faith, but I kind of believe in karma, even dumb things like those graphics they felt obligated to show. Eh, we all believe whatever we believe. You don’t have to explain it. Most of us know that the baseball gods are real. I refer to the baseball gods also from time to time but if they really had power this Stros team would be paying a hefty debt.

Their hottest hitter in August and September was Dalbec. Has he even played in this series? I am with you but he is currently on the outs here at SP. Is he? Why? Anyway… these past few days it seems like a feeding frenzy here… it’d be faster to name guys who *aren’t* on the outs. Kiké.

I refer to the baseball gods also from time to time but if they really had power this Stros team would be paying a hefty debt. Sometimes it just takes time. I mean the Yankees had a long dynasty but the baseball gods were just biding their time to make it all come due - in October of 2004 and hopefully forever after.

Here's my penetrating analysis for the day: to win at baseball it helps to score lots of runs! The Red Sox have won every game when they scored more than four runs and lost every game when they scored fewer than 4 runs going back to September 10th. But they are 7-9 when allowing more than 4 runs.
Ergo: this team, for whatever reason, lives and dies on its offense.

Most people are like, the Astros are cheaters I really don't want them to win the world series.
Maybe I'm a little messed up in the head, but they're my backup team and it's because they're cheaters. If they win, it doesn't quite count. It's going to be a little bit fake historically, like the 2020 world series. Ideally the Red Sox win the world series, but if that's not going to happen then the next best scenario is that the rest of the teams only combine for like half of a world series title.

It’s really just Renfroe and our bullpen lol. Every other position player has contributed, then Renfroe was a big negative with last night’s two DPs and missing the difficult, but doable catch in Game 4

The old adage is that pitching wins in the playoffs, and the Sox have had very little of it. It’s really hard to slug your way to a title. In fact, I’m not sure it’s ever been done. The whole modern game is about relief pitching, and the Sox have been brutal there. If the Sox are going to take the next 2, they need some pitching to really step up.

But so would Cora? Hmmm... Cora already paid his debt - he was effectively banned for a year! Remind me, again, what punishment the Astros players have faced...? Cora effectively got to take a year off for COVID and come back to a cushy multi-million dollar gig. Not bad. The Astros players all got immunity for some reason(can’t explain that one-maybe it was because of their Union), but they canned the manager and GM and were fined and lost multiple draft picks, too. Can I say that the Astros “paid their debt”?

I guess I just figure guys can have a few rough games in a row any time. That doesn’t cancel the good they did to help the team get much farther this season than anyone dreamed.

That’s true, I think all of us have our favorite punching bag, and in aggregate, that makes the whole team a punching bag lol. The Renfroe hate will subside, but Vazquez’s pitch calling and Xander’s lack of range are open questions for the off-season. This season is definitely a win, which really helps us get over Mookie and look forward to the next crop of prospects making an impact!

I am just happy the Sox have given me a whole heck of a lot more enjoyment this season than I expected.
It has been a rollercoaster ride and it is still going.
And the future is looking good, much to look forward to.

Can I say that the Astros “paid their debt”? I mean yes, Cora leads a very privilged life in the grand scheme of things. And cheating at baseball is not some capital offense anyway. But Cora has clearly paid more of a price than the Atros players.

The criticisms of Bogarts have been especially embarrassing. There's a certain strain of fandom that seems to want to hate one's team and its players. Maybe a projection of self-loathing? I dunno...

I can’t imagine the Astros would be dumb enough to try that stuff again. It seems like a reach.

I can’t imagine the Astros would be dumb enough to try that stuff again. It seems like a reach. I wish I had recorded it but it was pretty clear that Valdez had some "sticky stuff" on his left temple area. He would dab his finger tip before the pitch and then wipe his head clean as he walked off the mound and prepared for inspection. Several others on this site saw it as well. ref: page 110 of this thread

Jeff Luhnow was also made a key scapegoat here. It was never clear that he even knew about it, though.

Because of a family obligation, I was only able to watch the first three innings which is when I noticed it. I assume it continued in the later innings. There was even one close up of him where a "puddle" was visible

Lunhow personally blames Cora for everything (his daughter goes to Penn and I know a few of her sorority sisters), kinda sad he complains to his own daughter and shows no contrition/leadership. He’s a typical McKinsey consultant, like “we performed unprecedented due diligence on Roberto Osuna” - translation “we don’t give two craps about ethics or morality, so this provides us a competitive edge” Beltran should get a second chance, he just needs to issue a heartfelt apology

It was shiny and unlike sweat after he ran his finger thru it you could actually see where he swiped, there was a path left by the finger. I don't think a swipe mark would be left in sweat.
