Boston Celtics 2021-2022 Season

Also, is this the year Jaylen Brown finally gets some recognition? He makes noticeable improvements every year, but people always want to cap his ceiling and act like he’s already reached it. This is my yearly reminder, he’s only 24! Fine 25 in 3 days, but still, he’s still a young guy. Not even a veteran yet. The man was running the pick and roll last night and doing it effectively. Yeah, the way he looked last night made me think the C's have 2 guys on the verge of superstar status. He was just pouring it in during the 1st qtr. Tatum going 2/15 from 3 isn't going to happen often and will skew his numbers for months. Overall they looked pretty good but with 2 OTs why didn't the bench get more run? I hope Ime recognizes that was a mistake. One of the strengths of this team should be the depth but only if you have the confidence to use it. PP and Nesmith 11 minutes each, they should get more than that in a normal game let alone dble OT and it showed in the end.

Jaylen was awesome on offense. 46 points but still SELFLESS throughout. Never really forced his shot.
Jayson Tatum? Not so much. It’s unbelievable that he only had 4 assists and had the same amount of shots as Jaylen.

Just a putrid offensive performance by Tatum. He needs to start showing up to seasons ready to play. He shot poorly but other than that he played rather well offensively. He seemed to be making the right plays and not forcing stuff. He made 7 fg’s on 30 shots, the majority of which were contested. That doesn’t qualify as “forcing stuff?”

In the game I watched Tatum missed a lot of shots he would have normally made, not a bunch of forced shots.
Brown as you say was selfless but after putting up 25 early maybe became too selfless as he stopped shooting for a while. When you have the hot hand you have to keep putting them up, IMO.

It’s wild how good he looked when he didn’t have much of an off-season to improve his game. Tatum gets most of the recognition, and it’s deserved, but I can’t remember another player whose shown such linear progress for this many years in a row (with the “Kyrie year” being the lone exception).

I wish it was true that Tatum only had one of these games a year. The average distance of Tatums shots has gone up for 5 straights years, 12.7 rookie year, 16.4 last night. I'd like to see him focus on getting easy buckets when his shots off, the ability to draw fouls. Add some Paul Pierce to his game.
Brown just keeps having more and more of these games when he looks like a machine. Pull crap charging foul took away a three point play. Also stop with the highlight dunks, that mixed easy dunk was huge. Yet he looks like an all-time great scorer on nights like last night.
Maybe it's because he was fresh, yet end of that game into OT might have been the most impactful I've seen Grant Williams.
I'm all for increasing Robert Williams minutes, I don't want to see many 45 minute games though. He collapsed in the second OT he was so tired and you just had him sit out a game with a so called injury
Overall they fought and played hard, they flipped a switch late 4th and had an epic comeback. Next time turn that switch on earlier!
I'm so glad Basketball is back!

China banned Celtics games because Kanter spoke out about Tibet.

Ok, that’s fine. He didn’t have it, and shot 30 times. He made 7 shots. If he had passed the ball more the Celtics win that game. Really disappointing.

This is why the Celtics have underachieved for the past three seasons. When the going gets tough, they settled for isolation scoring. This isn’t the 90’s. You gotta score 110 to win. The Warriors changed the sport. Championship teams move the ball and move without the ball OR at worst run the p/r. I love that Jaylen didn’t force shots or call for isos but was looking to make the right play.

While I don't disagree with you on moving the ball and ISO play I will say give it time as that is the goal as stated by the coach. The season just started and the preseason didn't go so smoothly that you could expect an efficient new offense to be implemented this early. What I did see is them taking shots quickly when their was an open shot, maybe too often but that is another strategy that could have been in play. Fact is if Tatum just had a decent shooting night they would have won in regulation.

Julius Randle is about to turn 27, there’s a reason last year was a big breakout year for him and why the first game looks like he may have taken another step as far as maturity goes.
Jaylen Brown is about to turn 25 and Tatum is 23 until March. Just look at Tatums body now compared to even just 2 years ago, let alone when he entered the league. His body and brain are still developing. They need to mature, I hope it is sooner than later but we should never under estimate a players maturity.
It’s why it won’t be surprising to me if we start looking at Jaylen being above Tatum in some respects this season. It won’t be because he’s more talented or even “better” skill wise, but his game will mature first.

You need a coach that doesn't want to live and die by the three ball and has the ability to get his players to play that way. It's early, so we'll see, yet yeah when things got tough they just started bombing away.
Smart isn't the right PG, I'd give Schroder a chance. I like the talent level, I'm just not sure Smart, Schroder, Pritchard and Richardson fit together. It's why people bring up starting Nesmith, trying to find the right combo of size, defense and shooting. It's why I wanted Ball. I'm fairly convinced Smart can't be a starting PG on a championship team.

If Brown becomes better and he may very well do that, it has everything to do with him being an elite athlete, while Tatum is a good one. There age is also why you need the right PG running the offense. A want a PG looking at Tatum shooting night and going let's do this to get you some easy buckets to get you going. Be it post ups, pick and role, or run a bunch of switches to get Tatum going to the basket against a smaller player.

I would be very excited to see Brown take that step and think it is a real possibility yet I haven't seen him become a facilitator yet. But his shooting has become lights out and his athleticism means he will be able to take it to the hole when pressed. He really has improved every year so that is exciting. Not sure yet on the guards, it was just one game. To me the O will take care of itself. I could be wrong but to me their is enough talent to figure it out. I agree with umass on getting Tatum good looks to get him going but why didn't that come from Ime? IMO it comes down to defense, play great D and run run run. They have the guys to play better D and they will, it might just take some time. I also think Horford is going to be a big part of that equation as the season goes on. Just one game, stuff to like and then not so much but it is a new coach so patience is needed.

Yet good to see you're consistent, you called him a bust during the draft didn't you? If you compare age, I don't think Smart is better at anything. I'd even rate their D as equal at the same age, Ball was a beast last year. He should have picked a different team though in free agency.

I didn't see him becoming a really good defender, which means he works really hard at his game. While I've come around on Ball and I appreciate him as a player, I'd still take Marcus over him.

So I wanted to check if I was just not remembering things right, the really good and really bad games usually stick with you more.
64 games played for Tatum last year, he had 2 games in the teens and 4 in the 20's yet worse than last game FG%, then 10 games in the 30's. It's about what I remember, about once every ten games on average last year he'd have a horrible shooting game. Five playoff games one in 20's, 2 in 30's, one in 40's.
He seems to have mostly focused on improving his perimeter game and he's darn good at it. Yet time to start working on his mid range and paint scoring. This is part the team helping him get easy buckets and Tatum not trying to always score from iso. Part of those shooting nights is he always takes harder shots. Even his drives are coming from the three point line out of ISO. Which gives the D time to adjust and he gets murdered in the paint. Those ball movement drives from the 2018 playoffs are a thing of the past, as he just takes three's now.
He's got the Kobe/KD part down, now spend a summer with Paul Pierce. He would likely become the best scorer in the NBA.

He starts the year not being very efficient at the rim for what ever reason it takes him a while to get that part of his game going. But he always does and with his offseason getting bigger I expect that part of his game will come around in a big way. Tatum is the last guy on this team for me to worry about.

The percentage FG shots by range from rookie year to last year in that order for shots 0-3 feet, 32%, 26.1%, 24.8% and 19.7% last year. The actual FG% for those shots 62.9%, 67.8%, 61.8% and 73.5% last year.
Now for 3 to 10 feet, same years and order 10.7%, 13.3%, 15.5%, 20.6% last year. The actual FG% 25.8%, 32.6%, 37.4% and 41.7% last year.
He's fairly consistent right around 40% of his shots are in that 0-10 range. Yet much less at the rim and he's replaced that with double the shots in the 3-10 range. He loves his turn around fade away jumpers. Yet efficiency wise that looks crazy. Last year he's taking more shots were he shots 41.7% on, than one were he shots 73.5%. Either start to reverse this trend or find ways to score in mid range where you shot a lot better than 41.7%.

I’m not sure Marcus is a better player, but it’s debatable. However, I think Lonzo is a significantly better fit for this team. He understands what he is - and what he’s not - while Marcus continues to insist on taking bad shots on a regular basis.
