Matthew Fairburn left The Athletic Patriots beat to join Buffalo Sabres beat. He was never a good fit. Jeff Howe is still listed as national reporter, but was a little stymied this year beating cancer so had a lot of Patriots bent still. No idea if the NYT owners will still let them invest in outside talent or if bottom line considerations come into play and they keep shuffling the deck chairs. Lazar would be a good hire.

LOL! Browns get conditional 5th round pick from Panthers for Baker Mayfield.

Mayfield is good when he has time to throw, all about the OL with him. The Panthers were horrible at that last year, maybe their first round pick helps. Yet without better protection he won't do well. Darnold looked good till the line fell apart.

N'Keal Harry to Bears for a 7th per Rapsheet. Surprised somebody was willing to pony up for him. Chances were he was going to be cut before the season, so good deal getting something for him.

What a swing and a miss with Harry. I guess it's "cut our losses and move on." At least we got something - maybe another Matthew Slater - we could hope, right? Glad I'm not a Browns backer with what Cleveland's going through with Mayfield and the cost of his replacement. I'd certainly hope NE's brain trust would learn from this. From my reading, it wasn't a case of taking a stud with some injury concerns or perhaps some character issues. Am I wrong with that assumption?

Harry has no hands. He couldn't connect with Mac Jones. I guess he is a good blocker. I wondering what Flowers and Hightower are gonna do.
Jason McCourty retires. Use to be with Patriots.

No Athletic beat writer news. Steve Buckley (normally Sox) and Larry Holder (listed as Saints reporter) have been covering camp leadup so far. If they aren't covering Patriots with a dedicated reporter, that's a poor decision. I get not wanting a dedicated reporter for every city and every sport, but if they lose that local bent in some of the tentpole cities/teams, they are gonna suffer.

I’m excited for the Pats but worried too. At least we have a decent WR group. I bet if TB12 was here he would of been pleased with this group.
Maybe BB learned a lesson.

BB was pretty effusive in his praise for Mac relative to what he usually gives players, that got me excited

Did'nt BB say today Davon Godchaux he’s one of the best defensive linemen in the league? But he rated one of the worst defensive linemen in the league. If you play BB game and take discounts on your contract he will praise you. I cared a long time ago now I take with a grain of salt.

He was miscast as a NT. When Davis took over there and DG slid over, different story.
EDIT - tbc, that's what I read. I'm far from an expert on DL play.

I'm far from an expert on DL play.I'd suppose there are no experts on DL play posting here. So opinions are formed from some combination of public opinion, casual observation and pseudo-expert "ratings" opinion. As poorly as the D played down the stretch last year and in the playoff game, they gave up the 2nd fewest points in the NFL over 17 games. If NE D has problems, so do 30 other teams. And DG played 59% of snaps for that 2nd-rated defense. He has established value. So I'll take BB's comments at (mostly) face value, recall when he said similar about a certain strong safety who became an integral member of multiple title teams, and take with grains of salt those who would dispute his claim with flimsy evidence.

That extension is crazy, puts him in top 15 DTs money wise.
Patriots defense was darn good stopping the pass and bad stopping the run. 20th, 22nd and 25th in attempts, yards and yards per attempt.

I think cleaning out the linebackers and giving the new kids will upgrade the speed. I hope Flowers signs too. I know he ain’t a linebacker but would look good opposite Judon.

Wise and Hoyer have both been out for a few days. Not ideal on Wise (Hoyer likely wouldn't need much time to get ready and Zappe clearly needs time/reps amyway).

Re: stopping the run.
Many years ago (maybe after than SD game where the Chargers ran roughshod over the Patriots) BB was asked how to distribute accountability to stopping the run. I will paraphrase:
The 1st 5 yards belongs to the DL. The next 10 yards belongs to the LBs. Everything after that falls on the safeties (they are called "safety" for a reason).
To say a DL is not a good run game player, or a good player at all, because the team's defense struggled defending the run, seems entirely misplaced.
Now, the person who knows that player's responsibility on every play, and has seen each play multiple times, I'd suppose they'd be better able to assess how well the player played.
