I am amazed it took this long. Seems to me there was probably some value in having him around while bringing the new guy into the fold. Plus he's hit respectably since the trade deadline (.283/.317/.350). I guess I never felt the urgency about this that some did.

Yeah he was clearly hitting much better, this could have been done as a favor. Maybe he can latch onto a contender as a 3rd catcher and get a ring They also definitely want to give Wong all the reps they possibly can (I would imagine) It’s been fun to see Wong and McGuire hose people from their knees, glad I don’t have to see the Plaw Dawg try to control the running game anymore. I wish him the best, he seems to be a great clubhouse guy

Plus he's hit respectably since the trade deadline (.283/.317/.350). I guess I never felt the urgency about this that some did. Even with a "respectable" .667 OPS, he's bad defensively, slow (GIDP machine), and a FA after the season. -0.4 fWAR on the year. Every at bat he gets is a chance lost to better evaluate Wong and McGuire. I get he's popular in the clubhouse, but he's not coming back next year.

He wouldn’t be eligible for any postseason roster Correct, but he could still get a Brandon Phillips ring That game winning home run against the Braves paid for his ring

Looking at the 40-man roster crunch coming this off-season.
Let's assume Chris' 6 (not including German) locks are the only players protected: Walter, Murphy, Rafaela, Valdez, Ward, Abreu
Let's assume the 6 acquisitions currently forecasted by Soxprospects is correct: SS, LF, SP, SP, RP, RP
Let's assume that the free agents to-be all leave OR fit into the above openings: Bogaerts, Martinez, Eovaldi, Wacha, Paxton, Hill, Strahm, Pham
Fairly harmless cuts: Chang, Almonte, Refsnyder (don't worry, they can invite him back), Cordero, Brasier
That leaves us with 43 players for 40 spots. (39 on the 40-man + 5 on IR + 6 rule-5-elig + 6 free agents - 8 free agents - 5 cuts)
The team needs to make 3 more cuts, or trade away 3 players, at a minimum. My best guess: Darwinzon Hernandez, Rondaldo Hernandez and Eduard Bazardo.
Of those 3, they may all make it through waivers if waived at the right time. Ronaldo may get claimed or choose to go elsewhere, but if he is the 3rd catcher, he may stay.
Best alternative option is to not add Abreu and hope that he isn't claimed in the rule 5 draft. That seems iffy.

Is Refsnyder arb eligible? Spotrac indicates he's not, but bref and Fangraphs say he is? I guess go with the majority?

He is arb eligible. He's listed at 3 years, 91 days of service time.
Sportrac says he has "1.107 years of experience". I have no idea how they come to that conclusion on a guy that he played in 282 major league games.

Tall low 90’s sinker/slider guy it would appear 6'6' Derek Lowe at age 24 had a 6.96 ERA in 53 innings for Seattle before we traded for him and Varitek. Clearly McGee will follow the same career path.

He had a rough 2022 and wasn't showing up on prospect lists before that.
Looks like a little front office on front office violence. Rays call up fringey guy for a cup of coffee, Red Sox use their empty 40 man spot to steal him on the way down. No way anybody's carrying him on their 40 all offseason, so he should make it to Worcester.

Tweeted this, but McGee becomes a MLFA if outrighted. My guess is they might do what they've done with other guys like Franchy and sign him to a 2023 contract, then DFA him.

I really do not see November 40-man roster space for AT LEAST 4 of the following:
Darwinzon Hernandez Josh Taylor Tyler Danish Ryan Brasier
and/or possibly trade
Kaleb Ort Connor Seabold Franchy Cordero

Brasier could make it. xFIP was good, stuff was there and the team has always believed in him. I'm sure they'd like to get him on one of those premium minor league deals, but he might be able to find a guarantee.

No way Taylor gets cut unless his arm/back is finished. To your previous comment: Taylor last pitched in the 2021 ALCS - it hasn't even been a year. Pitchers missing 1+ years is normal. If he's cut, and his medicals are OK, 29 teams submit a claim.

It is his third arbitration year. Last year he got $1,400,000, and as everyone in MLB gets a raise, I am sure he will too if the Red Sox decide to keep him.

Not everyone currently on there gets to stay. Hint: 46 players is too many to fit a 40-man roster.
