They're meant to be a lot less formal than other threads on the forum, so to moderate them the same way would be silly. However, we do ask posters to maintain a certain level of decorum in these threads, and we plan on moderating the Gameday threads a little more actively this season. In particular, we ask that posters refrain from being overly repetitive with their posts (if you've made your point, let it go), refrain from monopolizing the discussion (if you are making more than a couple posts in a row, you probably need to slow down a little bit), and of course, follow the Ground Rules ( link). The point is to make these threads worth participating in and fun for all posters, from our long-time fixtures to people just signing up today. -The Management

Win this series, and they're back in it for real.

That's a whole lot of TBD for a big league team, let alone a playoff contender.

I will have no trouble being an optimist for this series. Either the team turns it around, which would be great, or they continue to suck and we get to witness a heck of a fire sale and an even busier off-season, which would also be a lot of fun.

When is the last time they went into a 4 game series with the starters for 3 of the games TBD?

FWIW: Hunter Renfroe has been on the DL twice this season and has as many HR’s as Bogaerts and JDM COMBINED.

The good news is that Jose Ramirez is one of the more fun players around to get whupped by. Missing Shane Bieber in a four-game series is fortunate.

I didn't even care about Hunter Renfroe when he was here. Well, now you have JBJ to not care about instead. I guess what I'm trying to say is the Renfroe reminders are tiresome because the deal that sent him out of town was the poster child for buy-low/sell-high deals and was so obviously a bet on players regressing to the mean. (It also was so obviously a way to use Henry's cash, which is our strength relative to the rest of the league, to buy two decent prospects.) Bets don't always win. Betting on Renfroe to have the career year he's having at age 30 would've been just as risky. Maybe you would prefer that the GM (or whatever his title is) never take risks. In that case we never would've had Renfroe in the first place because he was a middling first-round bust when we signed him.

In that case we never would've had Renfroe in the first place because he was a middling first-round bust when we signed him. Renfroe has a .310 OBP. His xwOBA is .323, which is right in line with his career norms but 30 points lower than it was last season. But his wOBA is .352, 8 points higher than it was last season. And he's missed a third of his team's games. He actually hit better last season but has been luckier (in a pretty small sample) this season. He's the same extraordinarily average player he's always been.
Which is obviously better than JBJ has been. But to restate what's been said many times: trading Renfroe for JBJ+prospects was fine; it was the lack of a complementary move to bolster the outfield that was a mistake.

Xander Bogaerts has a higher batting average than Hunter Renfroe's OBP and he's a shortstop, but whatever.

Any chance a TBA could be young Jay Groome? I would like to see him, see if there is hope.

Enjoy!
It's amazing how many of these plays feature Franchy at 1B. He's at -2 OAA there and I don't know how it's not worse than that... Fair number of appearances by other guys playing out of position too. This doesn't even include that fly ball Arroyo never saw in RF.

Speaking of Run Differential, according to Baseball Reference this is the worst RD over a 5-game span since... 1901!

Really pulling for a Cleveland sweep. 4 games ends any disillusionment and allows Bloom to act more freely and do what's right for this team long term. .500 on July 25th after just getting swept and had an historically bad week. Zero series wins against in-division opponents this season.
If they got hot and won it all it would actually be kind of annoying. You can be a .500 club until August and be as bad as you possibly can be, get a hot streak going, enter the playoffs as a 3rd Wild Card that never should have existed and steal a ring from teams that have played well all year would bother me. It's nice for Sox fans, but it justifies ruining the regular season and expanding the playoffs further. I hope no WC3 team ever wins it.
There's just a no-win situation here. The more likely scenario if they got in would be a WC3 and highly doubtful they get any further. Is that really worth dragging this corpse of a team? It feels Bruins-esque.
Just annoyed at how bad this team got smacked around for 3 straight when they're in "prove it" mode with Bloom and we're still talking about things turning around. They were good for one month when playing under .500 teams.

Just so I have got this right -- You think it is odd that a member of the Sox Prospects dot com community is interested in seeing a Sox prospect?

It’s just that Groome would be the worst one yet. He can’t throw strikes. They would eat him alive.
