My order of preference for this series: 1. Red Sox sweep 2. Red Sox win 3-1 3. Indians sweep 4. Indians win 3-1 5. Series split
ADD: Or whatever they're called, lol. One of these years I'll get it down...

Brewers giving the Sox a player since they felt bad about the heist in the offseason. How nice of them.

I think many agreed with it and I still understand why they did it. Like I understand the process- I don’t think it was a bad one. He was unplayable against the Astros in the playoffs (worst player on the field) and was a defensive butcher in the 2nd half of the season. They felt like they didn’t want to pay him $8 mill for the same performance and I’m fine with that process. He’s looking good this year despite the injuries. Refsnyder hits lefties well and plays solid defense anyway- he’s been worth half the WAR in half the games (Refsnyder is at a 4.8 WAR pace per 162 and I think I trust him more in Fenway’s RF) Overall I do not care that much about the loss of Renfroe. If they figured they were going to overpay for an OF they might as well get a couple decent lotto tickets too. JBJ has been the worst road hitter ever this year so the gamble that it could be a wash this year due to the defensive gap did not pay off- JBJ as been very bad at the plate while Renfroe has hit well when healthy. But JBJ wasn’t the reason they did the deal. They did it to further strengthen the organizational depth. Hopefully Hamilton makes it as a utility guy or Binelas can make enough contact. That's a lot of hope, plus about $5M difference in salary. Also, I question the process here. What projection system had JBJ set for a bounce-back year or even a career average year? And what projection system had those those prospects worth the salary difference long term? That at least seems like a better chance, but a really thin one given prospect success. Renfroe generated $16+M worth of value last year. Even with regression he would look like a $12M or so player. A perfect platoon candidate who has a lifetime 135 wRC+ vs. LHP and a nearly flat 92 wRC+ vs. RHP. He was probably better suited to LF at Fenway (and RF in places like the Bronx), but not something you cast away for a player clearly in decline who may upgrade your defense slightly while dramatically decreasing your offense. Unless someone was willing to bet $5M on one of the prospects, which seems unlikely, it was just an odd move, especially coming when it did before the lockout. I don’t think they considered it a “slight” defensive upgrade and I don’t think there would be only a “slight” statistical difference if Renfroe was playing his home games at Fenway And I don’t think they expected JBJ to get back to his career average. I think they expected him to improve on last year, which he has (not that it’s saying much). I think they felt like he’s comfortable at Fenway so it’s a safe bet that he won’t be the worst player in baseball and he could conceivably bring positive value to the team overall. And he is still definitely comfy at Fenway- he’s at .295/.328/.475 at home. He’s just the worst hitter in existence on the road with at 129/.196/.167 This is also a trade you make when you don’t think you’re ready go contend for a WS. Like I think if they viewed this team as a possible bonafide WS champ they would have figured something out on and come up with a different solution to Renfroe and JBJ. I just think they really liked the prospects and valued the added organizational depth and felt it was worth the gamble to think renfroe would regress a little and JBJ would improve a little and the value gap between the two wouldn’t be huge given the defensive difference (which I still think is huge despite the metrics- I know I wouldn’t trust Renfroe in CF or Fenway RF). Now that hasn’t happened but it’s not a move that’s inexplicable.

QO system remains in place. No Intl draft.
The plot thickens…

Poor Xander. He just can't hit the ball a long way anymore. He'd make a better lead off hitter than cleanup.

QO system remains in place. No Intl draft. The plot thickens… but if someone signs X after a QO rejection, the lost draft pick is less penal. The teams top pick can't be taken. I don't know that teams will be scared off of him with the loss of a draft pick that might be a 2nd rounder. I know there is some risk to international money as well, but he is a very good player. There is only a few teams that are gonna be in play anyway, so I wonder how much the QO will factor in. Someone is going to want him on their team, if that ends up happening.
