I have too many favorites to count but if I could only own/wear one jersey it would either be number 8 or 9, small chance 25. 25.....Troy O'Leary ! (not throwing shade at Troy....he did a good job for us when he was on the squad) Tony C. What could have been.

in the spirit of sheer grandstanding and unrepentant self importance.....and if the Baseball Gods will deem this to be the last game of 2022....Let me say to all....thank you for sharing the journey of this season with me in the game day thread.
Through the good, the bad, the infighting, the overuse of analytics (LOL), the camaraderie is always entertaining and the sense of community keeps me coming back (because the brand of baseball certainly didn't help this year).
I eagerly look forward to next year, when we can ride again in the hope of World Series Glory.

So... decent chance we just saw Xander hit a grand slam in his last AB as a Red Sox I guess.

Probably my favorite Sox of all Time. Xander ! Papi - Mookie - Xander my top three. Probably Nomar and Mookie for me. I spent way too much on both of their baseball cards(fortunately, the Mookie cards are still worth something, at least).

Twins lost again. The Sox are 14th in the draft now next year. If tomorrow's game gets rained out, then it's up to the the Twins to win.

Well this is it. We just saw Eovaldis final start in a Sox uniform and theres a good chance this is the last time we'll see Xander JD and maybe Devers in a Sox uniform. Lets enjoy the last links of the 2018 Sox.

Lets enjoy the last links of the 2018 Sox. Of all the things that could happen this winter, I'd think losing both Xander and Devers is the least likely. If the Sox did not have the possibility of Devers playing 3b for the next several years it would be much easier to re-sign Xander to play SS for a while and then 3b. If the Sox lose Xander, there is less reason to hesitate in paying big for Devers, and more reason to pay him.

Did anyone on the roster exceed expectations this season? It’s as if the whole team took a collective step back. And the power outage is definitely the huge story here. Schwarber has 45 HR’s this season. Renfroe has 28(despite 2 stints on the DL). The Sox could have used those contributions. My view of those exceeding expectations are Wacha Schreiber Arroyo McGuire short list for sure Refsnyder Wong Maybe Strahm Your point stands of course.

The one guy (from last offseason) I wanted the Red Sox to re-sign was Schwarber and let him play LF for one year until JD leaves. He could then take over at DH. O well…. Bloom likes take Yankee players so much I would not be surprised if Judge is the next.

He could then take over at DH. O well…. Does Left Fielder Kyle Schwarber really help the Red Sox that much in 2022? Sure he hit some homeruns, but played a horrific left field, struck out 200 times, and would be eating a ton of payroll space.

One nice thing about missing the playoffs by 9 games is you can't get filled with too much regret about that one move they should or should not have done since nothing would have saved us.

There's zero reason that Xanders time ended in Boston the way it did. Lots of Fisk vibes for sure. Might as well forget to mail him the contract too.

You could make an argument that he does, and at any rate, he slides in at DH going forward, but I'm not sure how his salary would then impact the rest of what they can do. In a vacuum? Yeah he helps. But in context, I think the question is how that would've affected the 2023 team.

Pretty obviously adding Schwarber means not adding Story right? Yet Story nearly matched Schwarber in fWAR (and actually had a higher bWAR) despite playing only 94 games. And as bad as the pitching's been imagine if they didn't have the benefit of Story at 2B and instead had to deal with Schwarber in the OF.
Speaking of the pitching - I just discovered that the team leader in pitching fWAR is... Rich Hill. At 1.8. Not a single pitcher on the staff even managed 2 WAR.
Incidentally, that is only true of 3 other teams: the Nationals, the A's (who got 1.9 fWAR out of Montas before he got traded), and the Orioles. This is why I think the Orioles are kind of at the false dawn stage of their revival - they are a LONG way from having sufficient pitching, and there's only so many holes they can (or will be willing to) fill through free agency. I'd bet on 2024 as the year they become legit contenders.

He was SUCH a good fit for the team last year with his attitude and approach. He seemed to be a team leader almost immediately. Maybe they could have traded JDM in the off-season had they signed Schwarber? We know his defense is subpar, at best. But he was a huge piece for them down the stretch last year. I’ll never understand why you bat a 40+HR guy leadoff, but other than that, they could have used him. Also, I would say the odds of the Sox signing Judge are close to zero %. The Yankees will overpay him and make him captain until her retires. They really have no choice.

You'd have to think Boras would've gauged league wide interest in JD before not opting out. If they had signed Schwarber, teams would've had all the leverage in trade talks for JD. Do you then have to eat half his deal to get a mid level prospect back? If so, Schwarber essentially turns into a $30m guy for 2022.

No matter what happens...the lact day of Eck. Sadness ensues.
Losing Remy, retirement of Eck, lots of injuries and uninspired baseball = one rough season
