Someone quick tell us how this is a terrible move. Why I didn't want this to happen: Lefty whose defense supposedly rates poorly meaning his only position in the field at Fenway is probably left. If he's going to play defense Verdugo probably will have to play some outfield. Also he faced very little high velocity pitching in Japan so I'm worried how he'll do with that (though of course the Red Sox would have data on it). Now that it's happened I will believe in the FAs evaluations and hope the raking translates to the majors and ideally that he can play a passable left.

I wonder if this puts Verdugo on the block to get a RF or pitching. This guy clearly can't play RF from the scouting reports. They clearly haven't liked Verdugo in RF or they'd have played him there one would think. I hope they didn't pay that deal to a DH.

So, LF or DH? And if so, does this portend anything on Verdugo?

If that bat translates they got a helluva hitter and the leadoff spot issue would be resolved.
He didnt come cheaply. He just got posted and signed today. Now that's the aggressiveness I like. Just hope they're right about it translating, but if a .320 career hitter in Japan can't hit in the majors who can?
So is he the DH or do they stick him in LF and hope for the best?

Seiya Suzuki 2021 OPS: 1.069 Seiya Suzuki 2022 OPS: .770
Mastaka Yoshida 2021 OPS: 1.007 Masataka Yoshida 2022 OPS: ?
I'm projecting something around .750-.775, with a higher average/higher OBP and a much lower SLG. Not to say he's not worth $18mil/year. oWAR might like his stat line.

I was told by a friend in Japan a few weeks ago that he was an OBP machine and posted here. There seemed to be some mix of skepticism and interest. My first thought was, if he can handle the heat (there aren't a lot of guys in NPL that throw 95+) he could be a tremendous asset. But I also thought he's left-handed and Benintendi's similar, more established and younger so the Sox would probably have a reunion with Beni if that's what they want. I'm guessing the same money (even even a little less) would've gotten Benintendi done, so I guess they don't want to go back.
Here's hoping the guy adjusts and rakes.

Someone quick tell us how this is a terrible move. Weak outfielder. (But probably a good move)

I'm gonna guess Benintendi gets noticeably less than this and if so I hope the Sox/the market are right about the gap between them. Better-Benintendi would be a great add to the team!

Love it, who cares about defense when you can stash him in LF/DH? We had Manny and Hanley after all lol

Better than any of the FA outfielders. Could be fun. I like that oppo shot — play some wallball!!! Masataka Yoshida > Aaron Judge you heard it here first!

His stats jump out. The last hitter to come out of Japan with a hit tool this good was Ichiro. The Sox scouts must love this guy. He's a good fit for Fenway. Can fill in a lot in LF there.

Similar skillset to Nimmo (who would have been a great fit) but without the ability to play CF/RF, 1 year younger, better injury history and a huge question mark coming from Japan.
Fit seems pretty good (if Verdugo is slimming down to play RF) but for that much money, it's a huge gamble.

But here's a nice quotation: "For context, the Pacific League (where Yoshida played and highly coveted free-agent Koudai Senga pitched) is considered to be a tougher league to hit in than the Central (where Suzuki and Tsutsugo played)." theathletic.com/3928988/2022/11/23/masataka-yoshida-free-agent-japan/

However, with Yoshida on board to play left, including Alex in a package for Reynolds or Murphy becomes more feasible. Based on his offensive profile alone, I like this signing very much. An on base machine with plenty of power. All he cost was a reasonable amount of money. If he ends up at DH because the Sox bring in a better outfield defender, well, we have an opening there !

Assuming xandy gets signed lineup perhaps is? Yoshida-LF Hernandez?-CF Xander-SS Rafi-3rd Story-2nd Casas-1st Verdugo/acquisition-RF DH? McGuire/Wong-C
Depending on what they do with Verdugo/RF Yoshida to DH? I don't like Hernandez batting 2nd Story probably fits better but not ready to put Casas in the 5 hole yet. Just my thoughts on possible lineup construction.
