Patriots 2023 Offseason Thread

Not surprising. I can’t see the Patriots drafting one of these guys in the first round - although it’d be just like them to take one in a weak class Looking at Brugler's board and he seems to agree. Between the 2 boards, there are only 19 players with a 1st rd grade with JSN as the only WR. FWIW, McShay adds Flowers to the list (DB has him, along with Addison, Hyatt and Johnston as 1st-2nd rounders). McShay has a total of 21 players with a 1st rd grade.

It's funny though, listening to the media they have WR rising. Flowers is overtaking JSN for #1 WR, 4-5 guys going in first.
It's just crazy, I'm so pro take WR It's not even funny, yet I feel I have to keep pushing back. Especially against the crazies like Evan Lazar, there's 4-5 WRs with first round grades crap. I was starting to question if I was actually seeing this WR class correctly.
I've been waiting on the beast for a month! A few days ago I basically thought he wasn't doing it! Always love for information, yet the best part was everything in one spot. Testing numbers, measurements, stats and scouting reports, saves so much time. Thanks for that post Texas, I actually stopped by daily checking to see if it was there!

For those who like Brugler's work, he released The Beast today. As I noted last year, for anyone with deep draft interest it's well worth a discounted Athletic subscription by itself. I'm a little annoyed being at 14, since this is a Day 2-heavy draft for a lot of the Pats' biggest needs. Despite being adamantly against it, I MIGHT be coming around on a CB, though I still don't like Joey Porter. But a few trade downs to load up on 2/3rd round picks might be what the doctor ordered, since I see chances low of a blue chipper falling to 14.

Thanks for that post Texas, I actually stopped by daily checking to see if it was there! Bill Barnwell did a great breakdown on ESPN about how RBs can really never be justified in the 1st even with a transcendent talent like Bijan, because opportunity cost + first round pay scale + bust rate + cheapness on the free market make it rough unless he becomes a HOFer. But through that, you can see the value of a few other key positions that even with bust potential there's a huge incentive to get a 5 year rookie scale contract for them. My guess is teams will see the WR market and roll the dice because you can't get ANYONE in free agency and 2nd contract prices are insane (plus giving up trade compensation), so they'll do the math and take a 2nd round graded player in the first just in case it actually hits. There's actually analytical sense to that when all externalities are considered. www.espn.com/nfl/draft2023/story/_/id/36098056/2023-nfl-draft-running-back-round-1-risk-value-cost-picking-bijan-robinson

Well ranking guys, is ranking guys. Taking guys you grade early 2nd round, late first for a 5th year option is something else. I can see the benefits if you hit, yet that's if teams can actually can pick out the stars. The downside is if you miss, you've just increased the cost a ton.
You have to remember, even true first round rated WRs bust at a very high rate.
As far as RBs, I'm firmly in the camp of never take one in first. Given we have Stevenson who was 12th in rushing, 10th in total yards among RBs, while being tied for 3rd with a 5.0 yards per carry, among the top 12. Makes it even crazier. You'd have to be Patriots with Michael, legit contenders with nothing. Even then it was just poor planning! Look at a guy like Harris getting almost nothing, that's scary a guy that good cost peanuts.

And after you've spent that $1 you can find Dane Brugler's archives and download previous years of The Beast -- comes in handy when a guy signs here or gets traded.

Trying to find a mid round option at LT isn't easy in this draft. Yet you have to look at every scenario. Carter Warren is interesting, given his starts, team captain, double major, yet coming off ACL injury and he's older. Yet scouting reports mostly say the same thing, when his technique is right he's impressive. Has very good size and length.
Trevor Reid is my late round developmental guy. Raw, yet amazing athlete with size and length, got late start playing football.

Tyree Wilson meeting with the Patriots. Would likely need to trade up if they want him (and he's probably have to slip a bit to even make THAT possible).

Patriots now have a 3rd QB (though I'd still expect a later round draft pick, at least). They signed Trace McSorley today.

Smart guy who can play running QB on scout team. This team needs that, it showed against every running QB. Still wouldn't mind a better one in the draft though.

CBS and the Athletic both did seven round mocks. I don't really care about the picks, it's the value by rounds. WR dropped in both much more than I'd expect and the 4th through 6th rounds had good talent. We need a 5th round pick! It also showed how crazy different the values are, tons of guys going 3/4th in one, then 6th/7th in the other. You usually don't see that much range in mocks this close to the draft. So might have a large pool of guys ranked very similar and it's just who you like more.
You had Harrison going past our 2nd round pick, which seems crazy. Downs lasting till our 3rd round pick. You get the feeling either some people's rankings are off or the media in general doesn't seem to have a good grasp of what's going to happen.

Would you be happier if they had 2 4th and a 5th instead of three 4s and no 5?. Joking of course but they have 7 picks in the 4-6 rounds, just none in the 5th.

I'm pretty sure most advanced measures have 5th, 6th, and 7th as being equally worth approx zero capital, and the 4th round is the last where you have an expected positive value for any individual pick. Old BB operated exactly as that, which is why he didn't have a 5th rounder for a decade or something.

I’ve seen from several pundits that Patriots are in on Keion White. He is a special athlete that isn’t being talked about as a top player in a deep edge class but I wouldn’t be shocked if he ends up one of the better ones. Scheme versatile, smart, apparently ran a 4.6 40 at Tech’s pro day.

I like White, converted from TE to DE after 2nd year in College. Monster when healthy, negative spent 6 years in College and is on older side. Yet that has never stopped Bill, he's taken a bunch of older guys.
Top of the edge class outside the top guy lacks the typical production you'd expect.
Foskey from Notre Dame listed as a 2nd/3rd guy seems crazy low given his production, frame and things like fastest 10 yard time in the whole edge class. Broke Tucks all-time sack record at Notre Dame. Not perfect, has things to work on, yet so does much of this edge class.

A lot of Negative crap of Levis came out, with reports he might drop out of first round. Then OC goes to bat for him, then yesterday I see Payton Manning talking about him. You should take a look at him, his physical tools are like Josh Allen or a young big Ben. Also helps set up trades, because why I really like him. The attitude things seem so anti Patriot way. Good old fashion keep the league guessing.
