Do we know why Turner was removed? I missed that part of the game. I hope it was not injury.

Refsnyder has a .390 OBP
Great pitching tonight, clean baseball from the boys!

Orsillo is so much better than anyone the Sox have, I had forgotten how good we used to have it Mike Monaco is a million time better than him and DOB combined. As is Mike Antonellis.

Paxton has a small ways to go but woo I see why Bloom gave him that deal. When he's healthy he's a real good starter.

If you ignore that Cardinals series where the bullpen blew the first 2 games, this team has been playing great baseball over the last 3 weeks.

Gosh, please just stay healthy big maple. If he does then that can really change the trajectory of this team. He's an excellent pitcher.

Very interested to see if sale can keep it going. Is he back? I don't know I can't say yes but if he can pitch a good game I'll be ready to see yes. We need to see it again.

Great game.
I was worried James Paxton would be John Smoltz circa 2009, but instead he's pitching more like Bret Saberhagen, circa 1998-1999. Some might have forgotten how effective Saberhagen was when he could take the mound.
Paxton was solid for his 2nd of his 2 outings, which already gives him more good outings than Corey Kluber has.
If they can just keep him healthy. Big if. He's definitely somebody you'd want to hand the ball to in a postseason series.
That said, I didnt understand Cora pressing his luck in the 6th inning. I understood him letting Paxton face Soto but I would have yanked him then.
I also didn't get having Winckowski go 3 innings/40 pitches. Now he's probably not available the rest of the weekend. Tonight probably would have been a good time to try to get Kenley on track.
I guess Cora plans on using Pivetta either tomorrow or Sunday. He probably is counting on 7 from Sale, 1 from Martin, and 1 from Kenley.
Devers was awesome and Refsnyder had a nice AB when he stuck out the bat for a 2 run double. They didn't score after the 2nd inning but they hit well, as they have the prior 2 games as well. It's a really solid lineup.
Meanwhile San Diego has a stars and scrubs lineup, a lot of easy outs, bad enough to offset their superstars and Snell was a shell of his former self.

Kiké should not be allowed to wear #5. Why is that number not retired yet? If it’s available, I don’t really care. That said, I’m still shocked Nomar’s number hasn’t been retired yet. That’s what i’m saying. Why is wearing it. It should be retired.

Unless Xander picks it up, he won't fit the descriptor of RHH all-star at SS this year, or perhaps ever again. He is first among all shortstops in OBP and second in fWAR to Wander Franco. Coming into the game ...
He was 5th in wRC+ among the 31 SS with 100+ PA.
He was 22nd among all SS in Win Probability Added. He had 39 PA in high leverage and was .129 / .308 / .161.
I feared he would put too much pressure on himself (again) and have a fourth straight awful season situationally even when it looked like he would re-sign here. When the Padres overpaid for him (while they actually already had 2 SS!, and were pretty much explicitly committed to winning a WS, and soon) I couldn't see how he could avoid that.
I take no pleasure in this, and if Machado could only be hurt all year I'd root for the Padres to get to the WS (in part because I love the ballpark and city). Maybe the Padres can find someone to help him loosen up.

AL East goes 3-0 outside the division, and is now 101-51 (.664).
Sox now in sole possession of 2nd in the AL East and 6th in MLB in b-Ref's adjusted standings.
Breakdown of the 12 best teams in MLB, by that metric:
5 AL East 4 entire NL 3 Rest of AL
Rays have gone 6-7, with 6 of the 7 losses by 1 run, including games where they had 91.5, 82.3, 96.4, and 97.7 Win Probabilities. I kind of missed the fact that the Yankees won 3 of those (while losing a 97.4).

It's kind of a complicated counterfactual... For one thing, it would mean no Duvall. And Kiké in CF. And therefore fewer PAs to this point for Duran, though Duran might be knocking the door down in AAA, and/or coming up when Kiké goes to 2B to cover for an injured Arroyo?
I would think it would also mean no Jansen, since they wouldn't have the money to spend on him. (I get the impression they signed Jansen ~12 seconds after they realized they were out of the running for Bogaerts.)
And... is it possible it would mean no Devers extension? I don't think so - I think that was gonna happen regardless - but I'm not 100% sure.
Interesting hypothetical. I think the Devers contract was a knee-jerk reaction to losing X and probably would NOT have gotten done if they had signed Xander. After everyone freaked out and called the Sox cheap, they signed Devers right away to save some face. Maybe things worked out for the best. There is no chance a team would sign a $330 million contract to avoid being called cheap. The reason to sign Rafael Devers is that he's a good baseball player. Unlike Bogaerts he is still young, the deal will only run until his mid-30s, and there are fewer red flags (e.g. Boagerts' bat seemingly declining a bit - do we really believe X of all people is going to be carried by his defense for meaningful stretches of his contract?).

Watched the game this morning, Devers was crushing it. Came to the game thread and saw 9 pages and thought it would be a great read. Then i read the first 4 pages of posts and, no, it wasn't.
Good Lord, too much serious point / counterpoint that had nothing to do with the game.
Mods...you should squash that when it gets out of hand like it did.
Let's leave the game thread for the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. Give us some red meat.
