To add a little bit to this, McDaniel has Wetherholt listed as a 50 FV tier prospect, #10 in this years draft rankings and would slot him in as #89 in his top 100 prospects list. He has Yesavage a 45+ FV 11th in the draft and 136th prospect and King also 45+ FV, 12th in the draft and 139th prospect. Sounds like Sox might be sitting in a pretty solid spot at #12. Any of those three sound like they'd be solid additions to the farm. I have to assume that a team or two cuts an underslot deal on a guy since it seems to happen about every year so they very well could have the option of picking one of these three.

As a die hard fan of WVU and WV native, would absolutely love to draft JJ!!! He was preseason #1 on several draft boards before a hamstring injury slowed him down for 6 weeks this year: www.sportingnews.com/us/mlb/news/mlb-draft-prospects-2024-top-10-college-baseball/c9b4827e4179f84342fa21c9MLB draft prospects in college baseball 1. J.J. Wetherholt, SS, West Virginia There are some players whose numbers are just eye-popping. J.J. Wetherholt is one such player. He boasted a 26-to-22 walk-to-strikeout ratio in 2023 and reached base at a .517 rate. He wreaked havoc on the bases with 36 steals and had plenty of thump with 16 home runs. A left-handed hitter at 5-11, 180 pounds, Wetherholt has made several adjustments over his career, each of which helped to make him a feared batter. The only question is whether he's a second baseman or shortstop at the pros. No matter which position he plays, he's going to be must-watch TV. Ironically, I'll be watching him play against Penn State here in a few hours

Wetherholt definitely seems like a too good to be true scenario, I do have a hard time seeing him fall to 12. Stranger things have happened, I'd have said the same about Teel last year and Mayer a few years ago so we'll see. He definitely sounds like a guy I'd love to add to the farm even if another LHH isn't exactly a need for this organization at this time.

Yeah I’m not going to let myself think that he’s going to fall, but that would be like Mayer all over again. He’s like a lefty Bregman. I don’t see that many HS players being drafted before the Sox pick like this mock suggests, but it would be a dream. Yesavage would still be a win in my book too so it was nice to see him make it that far as well. Griffin getting a (loose) Tatis comp is pretty exciting too. I have been assuming Boston will draft a college player, but his ceiling would be fun for sure.

Who jumped into the top 11 to make Wetherholt fall?

Who jumped into the top 11 to make Wetherholt fall? James Tibbs and Caminiti. The rationale is McDaniel says there is a hot rumor that either the Angels or Pirates might take Tibbs on an underslot deal. Also there are a group of teams near 10 that are taking a long look at Caminiti if the college bats don't fall to their liking.

He's got Tibbs ranked 13th in the draft in the 45 FV tier. I would not be upset at an underslot move to have more money to spread around. Lots of options at 12, makes the draft a lot more interesting than drafting in the 20s but lets just hope that this is the lowest the Sox draft for a while.

In a hypothetical scenario where all of the college bats are gone and Yesavage and Brecht are available, who would you guys pick at 12? I like Yesavage a lot but I'm even more allured by Brody's upside.

Brecht may have better stuff and upside but 5.7 BB/9 this year scares me too much.

Brecht is not the kind of pitcher I usually fall for, but got to admit I'm warming up to him.

I know that there’s pretty significant reliever risk, but I’d be very interested in seeing what the new pitching lab could do with Brecht’s stuff

I know not a popular guy here but that swing fix for Vance Honeycutt over that roughly last 20 game stretch is really looking like the guy folks thought was a possible 1-1 guy. 2-2 tonight with 2hrs. One to right and a laser to left.
Probably not our guy but trending up in his play. Only player in ACC history with over 50 hrs and 70sb

If he does fall to 12, it likely tells you teams aren’t buying it. Because yeah if he has even a 50 hit tool you can make a real case he’s 1-1 in this class.

I took a ride up to Orono yesterday to get eyes on U Maine 1st baseman Jeremiah Jenkins. He is a junior who I've seen ranked in the 350-400 range of this year prospects. He has back to back 20 hr seasons. He did not hit any dingers yesterday but did hit two laser shots to right center for a single and double. No exit velocity available. I talked to a long time fan who has been watching regularly since 79 and he says he has never seen a U Maine player hit the ball as hard, as consistently, as Jenkins does. Of course that does not carry the same weight as as a southern conference team, but we have had a few good pros go through the program including Mark Sweeney, Mike Bordick and recently Jeremy Pena. This guy explicitly said that Jenkins is a better hitter than Sweeney was. So, like his former team mate Quinn McDaniel last year (drafted by Giants), along with watching the Sox selections, I'll be watching for where Jenkins goes this year. Maybe even to the Sox in the 5-10 round range. That would be fun !

I’ve said this a couple times now but while you obviously don’t draft just for need, if you look at some of the guys playing first in the low minors these days I think it makes a lot of sense to target a guy like this in the middle rounds to get a guy that actually knows the position if nothing else.

What is it about the Southern Conference that causes you to thin that excellent performance in that league would say more about hJenkins'potential? The schools in the Southern Conference play in warm weather, but it is a low level of competition compared to a dozen other conferences. Did you intend to refer to a different conference?

I just refer to college baseball in the warmer climates that attract the more known top talent. Not even aware that there is a conference named Southern. Comparing Jenkins to Maines greatest hitter in my opinion, Sweeney, is not the same as comparing him to the greatest at Miami or LSU etc. Another note I'll make is that I've never seen anyone outside of MLB hit the ball as hard as Hanley Ramirez in AA, until yesterday !!
