Yeah if you get to the point where Kurtz looks like a stud and Casas is elite and you want to keep him it’s a good problem to have. I wouldn’t worry about the overlap at all. Wasn't there a commentary in another thread that went like "Trout didn't get to the Sox in his draft year, but if he had, the Sox weren't going to draft him because they had already drafted a comparable talent a year earlier in Westmoreland?" If the Sox's pick arrives and Kurtz and Yesavage are both on the board, what do you do? Take whichever one you think is going to be the best MLB player

"We drafted a kid we think will be a really good all around talent. Don't want too many of those in the system, we should look elsewhere in this draft."

Is one clearly ranked higher than the other, if so I take that one. However if one is not clearly higher than the other, what are their bonus demands? Can one be had for underslot that will help in the later rounds? If so I take that one. If the grades and money are equal then I personally take the pitcher since it would be nice to have a highly drafted pitcher join the farm.

Was watching what I could find of Christian Moore online. Couldn't help but notice his swing was what used to be be referred to as somewhat inside out. Which lead to many homers hit to right and right center for major oppo power. Cant help but wonder what happens when he goes pro and with professional hitting coaches and they work on the swing as he progresses through the system. Really intriguing hitter with superior bat to ball skills. Would be quite happy if he were the pick at 12. He looks like an above average major leaguer to me. Plus he hits righty which they really need.

Wow if someone can get Smith to lift the ball more, look out Reaffirmation for the “please no Honeycutt” crew

Seems like Kurtz really is a special bat. Wonder if he could play some corner outfield?

A, you don't draft for need in the MLB draft so no just removing all bats from your board in the first round and forcing themselves to draft a pitcher no matter what is bad planning. B, that is not true that the only way to get high level pitching is to draft pitchers high. I mean sure it helps but it sure is not the only way to get it. Why is it bad to force yourself to draft a pitcher they have enough infielders and quite honestly haven’t developed any pitching consistently in decades. The only acceptable reason not to is Breslow doesn’t trust the scouting department as a whole which if that’s the case then they should all be let go immediately Mark, I am with you hoping it is an arm at 12. But I think if Yesavage is gone, the sox will probably take a bat rather than reach for college arm #4 which looks like Brecht who might go in the 20's and be a reliever. The draft I always think of in this case is when Keith Law worked as an advisor for the blue jays in 2005 and advocated for Tulowitzki. JP Ricciardi really wanted a college pitcher and against the advice of Law and other scouts took Ricky Romero. Law went to work for ESPN the next year. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005_Major_League_Baseball_draftThere was a time this article thought the pick would be justified but as we know it was not the right decision. bluejayhunter.com/2009/07/settling-romerotulowitzki-draf.htmlCraig has acknowledged their is an imbalance in the system with a shortage of arms. I trust if he doesn't get an arm in the first round, he may look harder for them later in the draft and will likely prioritize them in any trade discussions. But like you, I will be happy if the pick is Yesavage.

A&M had a good pitching staff what appeared to be a more talented roster.

Maybe important for people to realize too that Cam Smith is doing this all as a draft eligible sophomore

Tennessee in general swung and missed a TON tonight but Moore definitely had a bad game. Not a ton of chances in the field, had one play where he showed a lack of range but his cleat also may have gotten caught in the grass so hard to say. Beautiful night in Omaha tonight, I’m going to be absolutely frying tomorrow though but it’ll all be more than worth it if it means an Aggie title!

Maybe important for people to realize too that Cam Smith is doing this all as a draft eligible sophomore So he'll have more leverage in bonus negotiations and isn't a whole lot younger than other draft eligible college players. I'd be interested to know statistically if a draft eligible sophomore is a better bet than a comparable junior with the same age and stats and etc.

Too hot for in-depth thoughts but Drew Beam is good, would really take a look at him as a high floor starter in the second.
Also, I’m not sure if I am remembering right or not, but if I am and Ted Burton is only playing first as he recovers from a shoulder thing from the offseason, he’s a really interesting bat-first second baseman.
Outside of that my brain is pretty much fried and/or preoccupied with game 3 nerves.

Interesting quote from Schloss here. Cortez had been a weapon all year in long relief but if this is the case and a team doesn’t feel like they could work with him on this, it’d certainly hurt his value as a prospect (which I’d previously pumped up).

I don't mind if this guy is a 2nd base only prospect I'd be fine with him if he's who they pick. That bat is legit.

Moore certainly did hurt his cause. Homering in the championship game. I have a feeling that he ends up a corner OFer anyway.

Let's be honest. Are any position players really stuck at any position. Catcher aside a first rounder is going to be an athlete. Most can play corner outfield at the worst. Even Catchers can play 1st most of the time.

I hope they take an arm if they believe they have a high %age chance of developing the available arm at 12 into a #3 or higher starter. Otherwise I would either take a college bat like Kurtz (great zone awareness and high EV) or a way underslot HS arm with big upside and spread my money. I would not take a high chase rate college bat. But Kurtz if he slips looks like a spectacular bat. That's the kind of bat you can trade for a SP, or keep and trade Casas for SP if and when the need to move one arose. I would not worry about duplication there at all. 40+HR power with discipline is a rarity and always in demand.
I would also not think twice about taking Konnor Griffin if he could truly be a plus defensive SS. Doubt he slides to us, but I would take that kind of talent over a not sure SP prospect.
