Well I’m not a pitching expert but I’ve always been of the theory that the better stuff is more important and I liked hearing it from someone who is involved in pitching development. I don’t think what he is saying is to disregard command its more like lets get pitchers with plus stuff and help them hone in the command. There's a Breslow interview on Youtube somewhere saying that he has a track record of improving a pitcher's stuff, and no track record of being able to improve command, and so that influences the kinds of guys he targets. To be fair, that video is a couple years old and there’s also a clip of the guy he hired as Director of Pitching saying he’d rather a guy with an 80 grade pitch and no command than a guy with average stuff and good command, because hitters hit average stuff when it’s in the strike zone. My guess is their true philosophy is somewhere in between—it’s easier to bring a guy’s stuff from fringe to plus than it is to do the same with command, but the guy with plus stuff and fringe command has a lot more margin for error than the guy with fringe stuff and plus command does. So as long as a guy has acceptable command, they’d go for big stuff over plus command.

Just got back from Austin, working a Longhorn Network game that Texas hilariously lost in extra innings. Honestly not a ton of high end draft prospects to discuss, I missed LeBarron Johnson (yesterday) and Tanner Witt (tomorrow, I guess?), which was unfortunate. Charlie Hurley, their starter today, is not much of a prospect to me. Big body, not a ton of power stuff or command, just kind of a college workhorse-y type.
The one guy that I think may be eligible as an older sophomore is Jared Thomas, but he's a bit of a weird profile. He's a true leadoff guy, really good contact skills and a good athlete, got a few good swings in where he pulled some timely line drives of hits. The issue is that he's a middle infield type of athlete playing first base for this Texas team. Part of that is context, as this Texas team is built very similarly to last year's Oklahoma team where there are a lot of athletes and a lot of guys who will elongate an at-bat, but not a ton of physicality. If not Thomas, I'm really not sure who would play first, looking at their roster. He's also left-handed, which limits him to outfield duty if he's not at first, which I feel like he's athletic to play, but it's not as if he's blocked by a stellar right fielder. So I just don't know exactly where his fit is at the next level, but he's definitely talented.
They have some other guys I find interesting (he's only a freshman but Will Gasparino is extremely my brand of baseball player, I like David Shaw as a funky relief-only guy though he didn't pitch today), but was not an overwhelmingly talented team.
The one big surprise of the day, though, was Logan Reddemann, San Diego's starter. Granted, only a freshman, so certainly not draft eligible, but absolutely an interesting name to follow to me, especially in the day and age of the transfer portal when this kid could be playing for a USC next year, realistically. As a true freshman making his first start, he was a relative unknown coming into the day, to the point where the broadcast team straight up admitted they had nothing on the kid in rehearsals, not even knowing how to pronounce his name. But he pretty quickly got everyone's attention when he started sitting 91-93 with a sinker and throwing a really quality breaking ball. The numbers won't jump off the screen (5 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 4K, 3 ER off of one HR), but he had a solid frame (6'2", looked maybe a tad shorter than that) and was really poised for a freshman on the road in his first start. He absolutely mowed Texas down the first time through the order, getting a few whiffs and generating a ton of weak contact on the ground. Mixed in a changeup very sporadically, but worked mostly off of the sinker and the breaker and was very comfortable locating both. He could very well fade into obscurity and that just be a one-off good game, but I came away very impressed and for a true freshman at a smaller school to have that kind of power stuff, that certainly merits a follow to me.

Here is a small list of starting pitching prospects I started up a few weeks ago. If I left somebody off my list it's because they are already well known like Wake Forest pitchers. 1st Round * Body Brecht RHP throws 104 mph Thatcher Hurd RHP * Hagen Smith LHP * Johnathan Santucci LHP
2nd Round Ryan Forcucci RHP 93-93 with some projection
* Underslot signing

I'm not a big fan of Hurd personally, I think Gage Jump and Luke Holmon could be better pros from that LSU staff.

Really impressive K and BB numbers, mid 90s FB, interesting slutter type pitch. Seems like East Carolina always has one arm that catches my eye. He will face off against Honeycutt/UNC today. Worth watching

I definitely like him, too. Fran Oschell from Duke is another. Red Sox area scout who covers Carolina area will prob need extra cross checkers this year between them, Santucci, the Wake staff, and basically any of the D1 schools in the Carolinas, loaded region.

Not a ton of projection left in my opinion but feels like one of those classic comp round college pitchers.

I've now seen Hurd, Hollman, and Jump pitch at LSU and hollman seems to be the best of the bunch. Other notes from LSU baseball. Cam Johnson is massive, he has an extreme side arm delivery that has to be terrible for lefties to hit. But he gets little to no extension and has a crazy short stride. He also has zero shoulder tilt in his delivery, wouldn't want to change too much because obviously it works but something I would consider. The stuff is there but the command and control are nowhere to be found. Does sit 97. Another freshman Steven Milam has been crazy impressive to start the year. The bat is light but he has a great approach and feel from the barrel from both sides of the plate. Spreads liners to all-fields. Solid glove and range but probably limited to second. He's also pretty fast. Already my favorite AB on the team. Brady Neal is a sophomore but I like his game a lot. Solid behind the plate with an absolute cannon. He's inconsistent at the plate but when he's on he's on with some pull-power and solid contact skills. Seems to have average tools around the board. Hayden Travinski kind of came out of nowhere last year, he had always had a gun behind the dish and crazy power but improved his hit tool last year and is now a bonafide starter for LSU. However the swing is crazy long and there's definitely swing and miss. Handles velo pretty well but not sure where his defensive home would be. Likely too big to catch and isn't amazing back there. Righty righty first baseman is a tough profile. He may have enough speed to play a corner OF spot but isn't a burner, just moves well for his size. Won't say much about Tommy White but there's absolutely no way he stays at third. I was excited about Paxton Kling when he signed but so far he's done very little with the bat, but if he puts it together, he has all the tools. Very fast and a superb defender. Mac Bingham is a transfer from Arizona and the LSU announcers already refer to him as 'Ole Reliable. Has a textbook college swing that produces hard line drives to all fields. If he was a lefty with that swing he'd probably be a top 100 draft prospect. Solid Fielder with an OK arm, not a burner but could get you some bags. Really good approach to start the year. Last guy I'll talk about is Fidel Ulloa. Transfer from Xavier I think and strictly relief but is light's out. Has some nice ride on his fastball and a sneaky slider, and through the first two series looks unhittable. Excited to watch him the rest of the year.

There's another xfer from Xavier, lefty Justin Loehr that really impressed me in the NCAAs last year. He had some pro interest, and looked good his 1st outing for LSU, have you had a chance to see him yet?

Hagen Smith through 5… 3 H, 1 BB, 15 K… against Oregon State. That’ll play.

I've only seen two outings from him and he looked sharp. Hasn't been playing much, but that's because Jay Johnson already has him slated as one of our high-leverage guys, and Johnson already seems to trust him.

A player I am starting to develop a crush on is Rodney Green, jr CFer at UC Berkley. This guy is clutch, a baller and off to a great start on the final Pac 12 season. Could see him developing into an offensive catalyst.

It would take quite a change in philosophy for them to go pitching with their four top picks.

Prepare for the unexpected I was joking with the all pitchers draft bit but I’m sure we’ll see a shift with pitching acquisition maybe it won’t be all first 4 picks but draft capital and money will be allocated to the position.

Charlie Condon out of Georgia is off to a torrid start (.643/.694/1.179 and yes that's his SLG) through 7 games, has multiple hits in each game so far. Easy to dismiss the start due to the competition, but he hit .386/.484/.800 last year as a (redshirt) freshman and against SEC competition. Dude can just flat out rake and while you don't draft for need and you definitely don't draft for handedness, it doesn't hurt that he's a right-handed hitter who will play in some corner position, when you look at what the future core projects to be. Very very real chance he's a top 5 pick but some swing and miss concerns as well as a lack of a true defensive home could push him down. Besides, most people thought Teel's floor was 8 or 9, and he made it to the Sox. I personally would give him the chance to play third as a pro with the comfort level that his defensive strengths would probably play pretty well in Fenway's left field, where he'd obviously clear the offensive bar.
Not that I'm against a pitcher at that spot by any means, but if it were to be a hitter, I think he and Braden Montgomery (semi-biased) are the two I'd dream on.

It would take quite a change in philosophy for them to go pitching with their four top picks. I hate drafting for need in any sport, go BPA. If its a pitcher, then fine. A few years ago the Angels drafted pitchers with every pick. Not sure how that will work out.

If you're forcing it just to stockpile arms, it's terrible I agree man. Drafting arms just to draft arms is an absolutely terrible idea. That’s my biggest fear with Breslow. Gotta go best player available or along those lines. I will say this draft does seem to have more arms and good ones that should be available when we pick as of the moment. Compared to the last phew. I hope they continue to take the best available players, draft atleast one or two hs upside types at any position with picks after the 1st rd wether they took some one of this profile in the 1st or not. And start finding some college hidden in the first 10 rds also.
