They're meant to be a lot less formal than other threads on the forum, so to moderate them the same way would be silly. However, we do ask posters to maintain a certain level of decorum in these threads, and we plan on moderating the Gameday threads a little more actively this season. In particular, we ask that posters refrain from being overly repetitive with their posts (if you've made your point, let it go), refrain from monopolizing the discussion (if you are making more than a couple posts in a row, you probably need to slow down a little bit), and of course, follow the Ground Rules ( link). The point is to make these threads worth participating in and fun for all posters, from our long-time fixtures to people just signing up today. -The Management

Ah - was looking forward to this thread so we can let the Mariners thread go to bed.
Days off are tough. I am so ready for these games to see how the team responds after a pretty baffling west coast road trip.

I hope Manoah pitches the most embarrassing game of his career, but I hope that every time he steps on the mound against anybody

I hope Manoah pitches the most embarrassing game of his career, but I hope that every time he steps on the mound against anybody In his four starts since returning from exile his starts have gone:
0 BB, 8 K, 0.60 FIP 5 BB, 0 K, 12.60 FIP 4 BB, 6 K, 6.27 FIP 3 BB, 6 K, 3.96 FIP
Game plan: be patient. Let him unravel. Tell Arroyo to just straight up not swing at all.

Arroyo is going to fish on a slider and give us his 55 EV 1-6-3 DP special lol

Give the whole team the Ceddanne Rafaela “you get one swing” ultimatum

Red Sox bullpen L/R makeup currently:
RHP: Kenley, Martin, Wincowski, Schreiber, Llovera
LHP: Bernardino, Bleier, Jacques
Schreiber threw 35 pitches the other day, so he might be down to start the series. To avoid Mauricio Llovera being the only right handed middle reliever available for the Vladdy, Springer, and Chapman gauntlet, I wonder if it’s time to take a look at Nick Robertson from the Kiké trade.

Don't forget Pivetta & Murphy. Unless you intentionally didn't include the Bulkers Also, if the plan is for two (2) bullpen games on Saturday and Sunday as implied in post1, then they will likely need to make a move mid-series (after Saturday game) to bring up a fresh arm. Thats assuming Paxton can give them some length tonight.

Not that much of a gauntlet these days, really. Since May 1st Chapman has a 94 wRC+, Springer 105, and Vladdy 106 (and -0.3 WAR). Sans Bichette, their best hitters have been Belt and Jansen, though the latter is also a righty.

When was the last gameday thread where we didn't start with a TBD in the rotation? It's been a LOOONG time. Hoping for health soon!

Per Statmuse, “George Springer has a batting average of .336 with 45 hits, 8 home runs, 28 RBIs and 26 runs scored in 34 games against the Red Sox since 2021.” I am way, way, way more scared of George Springer than Brandon Belt, but it might just be the emotional trauma.

Love the playoff feel for this series. Looking at probable starters, tonight feels like a must win. Imagine saying that at the beginning of the season? A game where the starters are Alek Manoah and James Paxton is a game the sox SHOULD win? Baseball is wild.

Also, duck and cover. He recently beaned a guy.Yea ended Taylor Ward's freakin' season, just as he was heating up.. feel terrible for the kid. But yes, Manoah relies heavily on the slider to get swings and misses (although its nothing like last year). So, Chang and Arroyo.. don't take the bat off your shoulders until you have 2 strikes.. and then just sit slider and hope he hangs it. Worst thing that happens then is you get frozen on a fastball and walk back to the bench, which you already both do 30-40% of the time these days, regardless... But get his pitch count up, above all else.

Manoah aside...
Berrios, who had an incredible July, is quite bad on the road this season. Not to mention 5 of the 14 HR he's given up this season have been to the Red Sox.
Bassitt is an absolute crapshoot. Also not good on the road this year. But the way his season has gone, he can go from pitching 7 innings, 0 ER, 12 Ks, to not even making it through the 4th.
No reason not to be confident about this series though, in my opinion. I'm pumped!

Sure wish we has Story for this very important series. Also, the extra starter the front office didn't get because somebody feels we are an underdog.

Maybe I’m missing something, but shouldn’t Pivetta and Bello be lined up for normal rest Saturday & Sunday?
7-31 - Pivetta (L) 8-1 - Bello (W) 8-2 - Crawford (L) 8-3 - OFF 8-4 - Paxton tonight 8-5 - Pivetta (?) 8-6 - Bello (?)
Can’t we save next the bullpen game for Kansas City next week, and not the team we are specifically competing with for the last playoff spot?

Sad to see Arroyo go, but he was playing terribly. Can't wait to see if Urias can be our 2B next year before Mayer comes up.

Well, that takes care of that.
FYI, Urias's career walk rate of 10.3% is higher than everyone's on the current roster this season except Casas and Refsnyder.

Yupppp. Immediately thought of this post when that news dropped. For some reason though, I thought Urias was a switch hitting bat up the middle, not straight up RH... now I see why Bloom got even more flak for the move. But still, Bloom's been quite effective with these types of pick ups that everyone screams about, until they suddenly succeed. And then they never give him the credit hahah Like Bernardino.. When they picked him up on that earlier West Coast trip of the season, I said "they must have literally grabbed this guy off the street." And in a way, they sort of did I found out, after listening to his life/career story on Baseball Isn't Boring. I mean, Urias is a different deal because he has a two year track record of being an above league average player, but still.. I love this team. I want them to completely and absolutely silence all doubters, starting this homestand.
