Fan graphs playoff odds now 11 percent At this point that sounds 11% higher than what I now think there odds are, lol. I made a decision that I thought they were legit contenders because I hate hedging, you either think you are or you don't. Sure there are varying degrees. Braves fans aren't worried about them making it whole Giants fans are sweating it out, etc. But I have to say, I was wrong. Last year I was right and this year ivam wrong in my judgment of the team. I didnt think it was right to sell and given their circumstances at the time, I dont think it was. I was hoping they'd buy a little and could get a competent starter, and since defensive help without sacrificing the farm. But if I had seen them drop 7 of 8 and get swept at home by the one team they needed to catch a couple of weeks earlier I might have changed my assessment, but I fell for it. This team lost because they were their own worst enemies. I started to think they could win 90. I no longer think that. They might win 85 but with a tough schedule coming up after the easy week .500 might even be jeopardized. Not that it really matters.

And away we go… “You pessimists! We knew we were no good this year anyway! (Though it didn’t mean selling at the deadline, you losers!). What’s with you people? Don’t you know everything is going as we were told in 2019? 2025 was always the plan, so anything between now and then is either a) irrelevant; b) gravy; or c) a sign that everything is going great!” Yes, this is when we give out participation awards and pretend winning doesn't matter. It's how you play the game (whoops!).

Houck is down 2 mph on his first rehab stint per Red Sox Stats. So basically this season comes down to if Murphy can pull off a miracle with his best MLB appearance to date against a prominent RHB lineup like the Jays tomorrow AND Whitlock/Sale coming back. Not only coming back, but turning back the clock while being dominant like they were years ago. That's a tall order. Good thing they responded. Per usual to the task today. Knew they had it in them.

Sports narrative trope I find most tedious: a team can't just lose because they play poorly, it has to be a *moral* failing.
They're 5 games out of a playoff spot because their pitchers have been hurt and the middle infield has been a black hole all season. No need to bring "heart," "desire," or The Will To Win into it.

Nope. What about all the errors (charged or otherwise) and baserunning blunders? The bad mgt decisions on who to pitch when? None of those are moral failings. They are bad baseball.

Honestly, the team's single biggest problem this season was Kiké's play at SS, which is closer to a problem of having too much "heart" and "desire" - he wanted so badly to take on that role and to prove himself there that I think he put too much pressure on himself and sort of got the yips. I wonder if Devers has entered that territory a little bit as well.

Glad you added Devers - and also add Casas. That Duran play today was a killer. The McGuire baserunning blunder - and there are so many others in lots of close losses this season.

Is it time for a Cora thread? He was perfect for the 2018 team. He likes his veterans. With the farm ready to start producing I think it`s time for a new manager. Sometimes change is a good thing. Just flip the page to the next chapter.

Just flip the page to the next chapter. Wonder how much it would take to pry Cash from Tampa. Always loved Gabe Kapler too, feel like he would do well in Boston. I haven’t given up on Cora, but I’m starting to feel open to other options

I`d like to see Varitek get a shot if he would want it.

I`d like to see Varitek get a shot if he would want it. I have a sneaking suspicion that Varitek's legendary game planning skillz are in fact hurting the team, possibly related to the team wide abnormally bad 2nd/3rd time through splits that have been a problem all three years he's been in the dugout

Llovera and Blier can go, make some room on both rosters.

I give Duran credit for accountability after the game. Another improvement over last season.

I think Paxton is similar iirc I mean the way I look at it right now they have 3 full time SP (4 if you count Pivetta)- 2 of them don’t have this issue and the other 2 have always had these question marks. Pivetta has had them since Philly and our own Soxprospects guys long had Crawford as a guy who was likely better off as a reliever

We don’t have the starting pitching. We used two openers in the biggest series of the season. We spent a lot of money to shore up the bullpen. Bullpen is showing signs of fatigue and using a reliever as an opener removes him from a possible key spot later in the game.
Zzz Duct tape doesn’t last 162. We don’t draft starters. We don’t trade for em. We don’t have em in MLB, AAA or AA. We have some nice young Latin arms coming along. But they’re a ways away and no sure thing. We better sign a good starter and trade for a good starter this off-season. It will cost $$$ and prospects. We’ve got a lot of young positional players in Boston. And, more on the way. Kinda similar to 2015. We traded for Porcello and signed Price. Then, traded for Sale the following year.
