8/11-8/13 Red Sox vs. Tigers Series Thread
|
Post by redsox04071318champs on Aug 11, 2023 21:21:46 GMT -5
Yeah the 2018 Red Sox the best Sox team I have ever seen. Yes, I enjoyed 2018 also. I am sure the Tiger fans also enjoyed the World Series championships DD brought to Detroit….o that’s right there weren’t any….lol I'm sure that Tigers fan do long for the Dombrowski days. Since 1987 the Tigers have been one of the worst teams in baseball. Im sure they do miss the stretch from 2006 - 2014 when the Tigers could expect to make the post season and have World Series aspirations as opposed to the 90 something losses they could expect prior to and after his Tigers tenure. I'm sure they enjoyed that stretch a lot more than these days. Not sure how that's even up for dispute.

Say what you want about Sale’s avaiabilty due to injury these past years, but that guy just gets the gift of being a mlb player and is down for anything to help his team.

10-1 wearing yellow and blue this year. Keep putting them on! Those uniforms are an abomination! Haha. They are, but if they keep winning I don’t care if they wear assless chaps.

Chris Murphy has been miles better than I imagined. Good for him. And a very useful piece moving forward Murphy has been a godsend versus any of the waiver claims the past 2 months. Say what you want about him, he's a dude that's saved this season on the brink of collapse. He throws strikes and doesn't care what happens afterwards.

Other than Theo, he’s the best Sox GM I’ve ever seen. All the guy has ever done is win. He built a monster Expos team in the early 90’s, won a title with the Marlins and had that team as an annual force, built a juggernaut in Detroit, assembled the best Red Sox team ever and just took the Phillies to the WS. Are people really that upset that he traded away Manuel Margot and Michael Kopech?

We have a short pen tomorrow.
Barraclough, Bernardino, and Llovera can go but that’s only three guys.

It would be great if Bello could go 7 innings tomorrow and the Red Sox could score hi a bunch of runs. Would love it if the top bullpen guys could get 2 straight days of while the Sox were winning.

Im pretty neutral on him, but totally agree his hate is because Cherington screwed him with the crap drafts he left behind. I have made my Cherington hate very loud lol

I love Casas too but yeah, he isn’t even having the best offensive season of any rookie and you don’t need advanced stats to see that. He’s doing great, it’s okay that he’s not gonna beat Gunnar Henderson this year. Let’s go for first of this rookie class to win an MVP that is fair. i always pimp the Sox before all others. To be clear Casas is having a better offensive season than Henderson. The difference as was pointed out before the season started is on the defensive side. The bar is simply higher at first base.

With Sale coming back looking like himself again, I think it's time to take stock of the situation. Whitlock and Houck are both expected back this week, and the only other relevant banged up player is Turner, who is reportedly trending in the right direction. I don't intend to count chickens here, but come the start to the brutal part of the schedule on 8/18, we could well look up and realize that our roster is suddenly filthy and devoid of all holes.
Rotation: Sale Paxton Bello Crawford Pivetta
You feel good about every single one of those guys on the mound right now, even while Sale is on a pitch count. There should be no more "survival" games. Every single one of these guys has been pitching great lately.
Bullpen: Jansen Martin Whitlock Houck Winckowski
Schreiber Bernardino Murphy
Absolutely filthy bullpen. Every one of these arms is quality and many of them are MIRPs to boot, which makes the whole staff more resilent in the event of poor starts, double headers, etc.
Lineup:C Wong 1B Casas 2B Urías 3B Devers SS Story LF Yoshida CF Duran RF Verdugo DH Turner
Some guys are hot right now and others are ice cold, but this is a long and disciplined lineup. There are no easy outs on this team. We're down to 9th in the majors in runs scored, but we're in a good position to build on that now that there's more oomph in the middle infield. Defensively it's been an adventure this year, but Story's return turns the biggest weakness for much of the year into a strength, and this time without sacrificing offense as we were forced to do with Chang.
Bench:C McGuire IF Reyes OF Duvall OF Refsnyder
This is a very solid bench. Duvall is a starting caliber player and Reyes has been lately as well. Both Refsnyder and Reyes have annihilated lefties thus far this year, which is a good quality to have given that many of the strongest bats on the squad are left-handed. McGuire has quietly had a decent season backing up Wong. There's good positional versatility on the roster too.
---
In sum: this lineup procreates. Fingers crossed the injury bug can stay away down the stretch, because if so I think this team has all the tools to make some noise, even against quality opponents.

'exactly...down with the advanced stats !!! ha. seriously, is any other rook having the impact he has on the W-L record ? I love Casas too but yeah, he isn’t even having the best offensive season of any rookie and you don’t need advanced stats to see that. He’s doing great, it’s okay that he’s not gonna beat Gunnar Henderson this year. Let’s go for first of this rookie class to win an MVP Josh Jung is more likely to win AL ROY than Henderson or Casas or Yoshida for that matter.

Awesome analysis, one thing to call out, Paxton/Crawford are going to need breathers with Houck and potentially Whitlock filling in the rotation, which would push someone like Barraclough/Walter/Robertson back into the pen. Getting our pitchers back is great, Crawford and Paxton look like they need to skip a turn or two a la Beckett 2007 (maybe Crawford and Houck swap out straight up and Paxton is pitch limited)

The difference as was pointed out before the season started is on the defensive side. The bar is simply higher at first base. Yes agreed, Henderson is just one guy he isn’t gonna beat that came off the top of my head. But Raley, Noda and Julien are all having better offensive and defensive seasons (so far - totally possible Casas ends up the best offensive rookie). And that’s okay. Doesn’t mean they’re gonna end up better than Casas.

I have always believed Sale could age gracefully if he is healthy. Dude gets Ks no matter what his velocity is. Just needs to stay healthy. Sale career K/9 and BB/9: 11.06 and 2.08 Sale 2023 K/9 and BB/9: 11.03 and 2.12

If Casas continues his current pace (not his year long pace) we'll get a draft pick.

... I loooooove how they've consistently added guys who put up good at bats and make the pitcher work over the last year, and with Urias replacing Arroyo the revolution is complete. The only free swingers left in the lineup also have scary power.

I didn’t realize Sale was over halfway to a perfect game. He’s always felt to me like a guy who could get one in any given start. He and Pedro are the only Red Sox pitchers in my life time I’ve ever felt like that about.

Duvall saw a million pitches per at-bat tonight, that was nice to see

I have made my Cherington hate very loud lol I just realized the other day that he left the Sox with Bello, Duran, Casas & Houck(and probably others?). That’s a pretty nice young core. I would dare say that the Sox would be in a better spot had they never fired him, too. All he does is win. I will also say that it is a MIRACLE that the Sox beat that Tigers team in 2013. That team was absolutely stacked. The Sox just had the Boston Marathon momentum on their side that year. They were not to be denied.

He and Pedro are the only Red Sox pitchers in my life time I’ve ever felt like that about. I take it that Clemens with the Red Sox predates your memories? When he was really on I felt he could toss a no hitter (which he never did) or whiff 20 (which he did twice).
