2023 MLB Playoffs - LCS Thread
|
Post by justsayin on Oct 21, 2023 4:31:40 GMT -5
Would it be possible to give the teams who went all-in to win their Division over the regular season a couple of more players for postseason rosters compared to Wildcarders? Idk, maybe reopen trade deadline for only one move for top team in each league? Clinch of best record opens trade window til first game of playoffs? Seems like injuries and too lengthy regular season really cripples the teams who win best record in each league, short-circuiting the home-field advantage. Hell, reduce payroll penalties for teams with best records, or something along those lines.
Just sayin.

The playoffs have been awfully boring but last night might have made up for it. Really rooting for Rangers - DBacks, but have to respect what the Astros have done. Like the former Patriots dynasty, their season starts in the Championship Series.

Like the former Patriots dynasty, their season starts in the Championship Series. I can’t stand them, but also like the Patriots, they had a cheating scandal, took a lot of national criticism for it (maybe more deserved in the Astros’ case), and yet have kept winning anyway. At this point, even their biggest critics have to admit they’re for real.

Glad the Blue Jays gave up Moreno for Varsho and added Gouriel for good measure lol I have been thinking about this (and the Teoscar/Swanson swap, which is a companion trade) for weeks. It makes me nervous about this offseason for Boston. How many times have we heard that the roster is too left handed and has too many outfielders? Sometimes, these kinds of sentiments push you into making trades you don’t have to make. More roster balance is ideal but I worry about siphoning talent to achieve an optional objective.

Yeah, ones, Clemens, ARod were all tremendous players before they cheated. But they cheated and there's no erasing that. Never said it's the only reason those guys were good, but you deserve to lose respect if you do it.

Varsho is an average hitter (below this year) with a plus glove in CF at age 26. Moreno is the same thing at C, but only 23 with 2 more years team control. Toronto was going for a WS and C was their biggest spot of depth. Hard to blame them for trying IMO. Yes you could have given up Kirk instead, but he was coming off a 129 wRC+, 3.9 fWAR season so that would have been a big loss. Their real mistake was letting Teoscar and Gurriel both go and replacing them with another glove first OF in Kiermaier. KK hit surprisingly well, but Varsho/Kiermaier/Merrifield is a really low ceiling offensive group to pair with Springer. Hernandez would have been the thump they were missing. Unfortunately for them, this stood out more because Vladdy, Varsho, and Kirk all had down years.

Harper's swing is so violent, it's ridiculous!

WAR blahblahblah*
Schwarber was the one that got away, he could have been ours. Nails when it counts.
*I do like WAR. Just not right now. Alternative comment could have been “WAR! Huh! Good god…What is it good for?”

There was a time when Harper v. Trout was a hot debate topic. Then Trout made the debate a no-brainer for many years. Now Harper is making it a lot more interesting(especially given the postseason resume Harper is amassing). Harper sure looks like the safer bet going forward.

Unfortunately for them, this stood out more because Vladdy, Varsho, and Kirk all had down years.Yeah Vladdy and Kirk going from All-Stars to merely okay killed them more than the defensive first OF with KK, Varsho. In terms of run prevention, it kinda worked! Blue Jays were in top tier in runs allowed in part because their outfield + Chapman get to everything. They were first in team defensive runs saved by a wide margin. Unfortunately for them now, half their lineup is about to be free agents (Chapman, Merrifield, Belt, Kiermaier.) That said, having three good catchers and then trading the best one (and a future star?) for a defense first OF… not ideal!

That also applies to the taking steroids scandals.

Rematch of last year would be quite compelling, but i would rather not see it I'd prefer to see Texas win their first World Series, but a Phillies Astros rematch could be compelling. I remember the exciting NLCS they had in 1980. Last year you could feel Philly was overmatched by Houston, but this year it feels like they're way more even. It could be an exciting 7 game series if they match up, and I might even pick Philly in 7, as long as Kimbrel doesnt pitch that game, lol.

Rematch of last year would be quite compelling, but i would rather not see it The Astros have been in 4 of the last 6 World Series, and if they are in it again in 2023 that is 5 out of 7. I could care less about watching if they are in again. I would prefer Texas to win in seven games over AZ.

We are somehow going to manage having both a wildly unpredictable and even totally random outcome in each series, with all the best teams getting bounced early, and the most boring possible World Series scenario of just repeating the same two teams from last year.

I don’t get why people are dumping on Astros-Phils. A rematch is exciting. They have tons of exciting players. They don’t much like each other. The Astros are a good villain. The Phillies fans have earned a reward. It isn’t bad.
