This trade makes sense if they were committed to dumping Suarez when they made the Urias deal at the non-tender deadline. I'll bet they expected to get a better package than this though. I'd take Isaiah Campbell over these two.

Is that crazy? Pretty sure Seattle is a really model driven team and the models are gonna think Urias is about the same performance wise as Suarez at $8M less I think that’s pretty crazy, yeah. It puts a ton of undue (imo) pressure on his bat. I’d be pretty surprised if he offered a functional improvement over Suarez (and even then, the bar should probably be a little higher). I mean it just puts pressure on his bat to be what it has been for three years - league average. And he doesn't need to be better than Suarez for that swap to make sense for them, though I put at a coin flip as to which of them is better next year.

like that a lot for Arizona
Suarez may put up some fun numbers out there in that park while hitting behind guys like Marte and Carroll, I’ll have to keep an eye on him in fantasy as a sleeper. If you told me he went 30-90 next year I wouldn’t bat an eye

Suarez looks like a place-holder while the Snakes' young IF (including Jordan Lawlar -- are we going to be roasting Chaim in 2026 for choosing Mayer over him?) matures another year. They got nothing from 3B in 2023 and were 22nd in dongs, so Suarez for one year makes some sense.
Urias's most-played position in the big leagues is 3B, so either SEA is banking on a bounceback or maybe they'll try to platoon somebody with him (OPS+ vs. R/L = 93/121).

I really, really hope the Yankees don’t land Soto. Even if they give up Dominguez that would hurt.

I really, really hope the Yankees don’t land Soto. Even if they give up Dominguez that would hurt. Let them. They desperately need an infusion of youth and ownership seems to course correct payroll as frequently as FSG. Let them balance extending Soto, managing Cole's opt out and their other aging commitments.

They can negate Cole's opt out by guaranteeing and additional year at $37 mil

Let them. They desperately need an infusion of youth and Soto is more than two years younger than Jarren Duran.

One can hope AJ Preller's erratic decision making may forestall a Soto trade to the Yankees, but I'm not feeling great about it. There isn't much smoke regarding other teams chasing Soto (because of his pending free agency I'd presume?) - I'm mentally ready for the Yankees to get him for very little, which is going to suck so much

The Yankees know damn well if/when they make this trade they're going to have to back it up with 500 million plus. This wont be a rental. One of the premier young hitters in baseball, one that many of us hoped would be a Red Sox come 2025, will instead beca Yankee teaming up with Judge to give the Yankees a lefty tight middle of the order that's downright scary. I think the Yankees will land Soto, although if they do so without having to deal Dominguez it'll be even worse and I hope the noise about them landing Yanamoto is just that, noise.

Soto isn’t getting $500m. That said he makes such perfect sense for the Yankees it’s scary. And if the Padres actually want to just dump Cronenworth the Yankees are a great fit for him too.

Cashman may be an all-time chode, but one thing you generally can't fault the man for is failing to bring in the players he sets his sights on. I think there's a non-zero chance that Soto, Bellinger, and Yamamoto are all in pinstripes next season, though more than likely one or two of them than all three.

Well he turned down 440 million was it? I can see him getting damn well close to 500 million. Let's see what Ohtani lands at. That should drive the market forward again next offseason.

If they land Yamamoto too I'll sing a different tune but they're hedging their fortunes on Cole and Judge's health while having a surrounding cast of past prime contracts.

One new report the Pads and Yankees are talking Soto which we already knew a few weeks ago and folks are already measuring Soto for his pinstripes. I don't want to see Soto in a NYY uniform but I don't necessarily hate the idea of them signing another albatross contract to their books. Judge got 9 years 360M at 31 years old, Soto will be going into his age 26 season when his new contract kicks in. Have to imagine Soto is looking for something close to the AAV on Judge for more years, 12 years 480M would seem somewhat in the ballpark of what Soto could get on the open market.

The actual Soto report is that the Padres asked for Dominguez/Volpe + King/Schmidt + more and the Yankees said no. That doesn't really tell me much. I would guess the Padres are at the "make an absurd ask" stage with several other teams, including the Red Sox.
The only real news here is that the Yankees want to embarrass them for asking for too much. That FO is in love with these kinds of leaks of unrealistic offers. Then when the final return (from another team) is much less than the leaked offer, their fans cry about conspiracies to screw the Yankees.

No team is one player away from being a dominant team. But they'd be an 84-win team getting one of baseball's best players heading into his age-25 season and the chance to extend him. The idea that you shouldn't trade for a guy unless he is The Answer TM is silly - and with that said, Soto is probably closer to being The Answer TM for just about every team than anyone in the game other than Acuna or a healthy Ohtani. The Yankees are at least good and any deal for Soto that will make them better in the short term and signing him to an extension will help them in the long term. My guess is that they're not a great trade match with the Padres, though, unless the Pads really love Dominguez.

There is almost a 0 percent chance that the Rays do the Sox any favors so if they somehow landed Arozarena it'd likely cost a pretty hefty overpay vs what other teams might offer. That being said Arozarena might be the most perfect candidate available to play LF for the Sox the next few years.

I don’t think they’d trade him to Boston, and I also think he’s one of those guys where his name is bigger than his actual production, but he is a good player nonetheless. I actually think he for Soto could be the base of a fun deal where the Padres don’t completely punt on 2023 and the Rays go all out for a WS, but Soto is projected $33M in arbitration this year and the Rays owner might have a heart attack just thinking about that. Edit: This source is also pretty terrible upon further review. But I’m so bored that I won’t delete the posts

The fact that the Rays can win 99 games and then trade away Glasnow and Arozarena the following offseason is why they are able to stay competitive year in and year out, yet it's considered off limits in Boston to ever consider trading away stars from your major league roster. It's incredibly self defeating. Where would the 2024 team be if Bloom/ownership were willing to be sellers in 2021/2022?

Yes, and after checking my notes the Rays and their ways have still won 0 WS so I'm sorry if I'm not exactly going to sit here and say the Sox ought to be run like the Rays. Don't get me wrong it's very impressive what they've accomplished in the regular season the last decade+ but in the grand scheme of things winning a WS is the end goal which they've never done.
