Hate to break up the free agency talk, but is anyone still here who is down at the Fort - or is headed down and can chime in on “much improved” defense from Valdez? It is impossible to understate what a big deal that would mean for team depth. Also interested in hearing and other surprises you’ve seen so far in camp. Can’t wait to see Valdez get more in-game reps. Jahmai’s statements in the broadcast yesterday were more along the lines of “the improvement has already taken place.. just wait to see it”... rather than “we *hope* he improved.” Given how much of a trainwreck Valdez has been in the field previously, I don’t think he would have made that type of statement unless there was legitimate improvement made. Just need to wait and see how it looks at this point. But absolutely, his profile would change dramatically if he is able to hold down a full-time spot at 2B.

Manager Alex Cora has appreciated the focus on getting quicker outs. In previous years, pitchers may have been too focused on pitching to the edges instead of attacking the zone.
“Everybody talks about throwing strikes, but we went from one philosophy to another in three years, and I think, with all due respect to the people that were running things (chief baseball officer) Chaim (Bloom) and the group, sometimes you got to be more consistent in that aspect,” Cora said. “There were reasons for it and we tried our best, but it didn’t work out. We got hit hard in the zone last year.” That part definitely stood out, and makes you wonder about some sort of disconnect between the pitching staff-coaches-front office. The case study from last year is Nick Pivetta, who got demoted to the bullpen and as Cora related last September, had a Come to Jesus moment via Chris Martin: “He[Chris Martin]’s a big part of what Nick is doing right now. When he went over there [to the bullpen], he talked to him about being aggressive. Use your best pitches as much as possible. Don’t waste pitches. Attack. Be in attack mode… As we know, the previous year and earlier in the season, Nick was shying away from the zone. Whatever Chris told Nick, it changed his season, maybe his career.” It’s certainly great that this new mindset (along with his new sweeper) seems to have unlocked Prime Pivetta. But why exactly did it take Pivetta getting banished to the bullpen and Chris Martin being the one to ask him, “Hey man have you considered throwing strikes mores?” to finally elicit a change? I don’t know what the coaches were or weren’t telling Pivetta, but sometimes you have to hear this from another player. Pitching coaches can tell players whatever they want, but I get the sense some players are like, “ok, sure, throw strikes, easy for you to say, you’re not the one who has to go out there and give up home runs.” Hearing it from a veteran player who’s walking the walk and having success probably reaches some guys who wouldn’t listen to a pitching coach.

I haven't heard anything about Mata and how he's looked so far considering it's a crucial camp for him. I have to think they will want to get him in as many games as they possibly can before making a decision.
We saw a few bubble guys Slaten, Campbell, Benitez get in today

Bryan Mata sidelined with a pulled right hamstring. How long is TBD There's probably not a realistic chance that Mata makes this team now. That's too bad. Once a top 5 prospect in this organization, now he's about to be DFA'D 40 man roster fodder.

Maybe this hamstring injury lingers long enough for him to get a month of minor league rehab appearances

Bryan Mata coming down with a JetBlue-flu type injury is hardly surprising. He wasn’t going to make the team, which meant the Sox risked losing him when DFA’d. This way, if the Sox milk this correctly, they’ll be able to get him into a few ST games late in March, then evaluate him in Portland and Worcester on a 30-day rehab assignment.

Netflix clearly read the script from MLB where Pablo Reyes has the game winning home run in Game 7 of the World Series and trying to build up to that moment

Has the SP team announced their spring training trip dates? More curious than anything.

Maybe this hamstring injury lingers long enough for him to get a month of minor league rehab appearances I had forgotten Mata’s pretty heinous stats in AAA last year: 30 walks to 28 strikeouts in 27 innings (low 6 ERA). Good luck to him trying to learn to throw strikes as some team’s long relief guy

NL executive- “we heard….”
So who did they hear it from? Sox? No. So they heard it from Boras, who is trying to create some urgency in other teams to bid against the Sox. These story plants to Olney are just to move the market and the talk about a longer solution seems to telegraph to the market that the Sox are offering length Not to say the Sox won’t end up with him, but Boras wants a second team in the bidding to sweeten their offer

Obligatory, uh oh folks there's actual smoke behind Montgomery to the Sox so ergo he's about to sign elsewhere by the end of today..

That Montgomery “could be part of the staff rotation” is a very weird statement, the kind of thing you’d expect a bot to say.

This seems to confirm Heyman’s various reports a few days ago they’ve had zoom meetings with quote “top free agents”, as well as met with Monty “two weeks ago”? Hard to tell if this is Boras playing games or if details of a real courtship are starting to get out…

I am still of the opinion that if Erod got 4 years for $80 million then 4 years for $94 million is a more than fair deal For Montgomery
If that signing is made I think I’m trading Jansen is 2 guys on the 40 man bubble mentioned in the new rule 5 draft thread for something relatively impactful

Heyman saying Garrett Cooper was either Cubs (where he went) or Red Sox. The Cubs have lefty rookie Michael Busch (from Dodgers trade) at 1B, compared to Triston with Red Sox - so like with Gio Urshela you wonder if possible playing time was a factor in choosing his team?
