A weird concept but maybe the Sox have determined the value that the marginal increase of Monty in the rotation versus the best of Houck, Whitlock or Winc. and that's their line in the sand. It is a weird concept that a team with pitching issues would think they already have enough pitching.

Funny how you felt the need to play moderator (which you're not) after my post but not the one preceding it. Interesting.

Red Sox first non-roster spring training invitees announced: Jorge Benitez Cam Booser Frank German Helcris Olivarez Jamie Westbrook Mark Contreras Eddy Alvarez Vermont, you should change the name of this thread to: Miscellaneous Stuff, or not spring training, or thread former known as free agency 2024, but it is no longer the ‘Spring Training’ thread. I started reading the thread expecting to read about how players ON the Red Sox are progressing or about games, or minor leaguers in camp, or non-roster invites but not rehashing who should or should not be signed in free agency. -Casas extension -what Sam Kennedy has to say… Thread got hijacked approximately page 4.

Oh, so it hasn't been discussed ad nauseum and this is the right thread for discussing it? Interesting.

New Pitch Alert: Brennan Bernardino "With the encouragement of Jason Varitek and others, he has one more weapon in his pitch mix this season. 'Everything I can do better,' Bernardino said Tuesday here at JetBlue Park. ' I got a new pitch that I’ve been working on, the cutter. That’s a pitch I think is really going to help me against righties.' 'It (cutter) was something we talked about at the end of the year last year,” Bernardino said. 'I talked with Tek about it. And then once (new pitching coach Andrew) Bailey came in here, it just assured that’s the pitch we needed to attack.'” www.masslive.com/redsox/2024/02/red-sox-23-unsung-hero-has-new-pitch-encouraged-by-jason-varitek-others.html

Well, the Red Sox could use a LH for the rotation and he would probably come cheaper now than Snell or Montgomery.

Another offseason, another ex Dodger thinking he’s more important than he is. Hope we find a good deal to send him out before the season starts.

Mariners' Matt Brash may very well be out for the season; just saying that outside of the NPB, Seattle is about as far as Kenley could get from Boston

Urshela signed for 1.5M and Cooper signed a minor league deal. If they weren't willing to outbid for either of them who seemingly would be better fits than any of those other guys outside of maybe Duvall it doesn't feel like they're being very aggressive, at least to me.

What does "aggressively monitor" even mean? Monitoring is passive. If they really want someone in that role they'd just get one - Ruf and Cron will probably sign minor league deals like Cooper, that costs them nothing.

How about Evan Longoria for that spot? Although I notice he has 0 games at 1B in his career

In general, one thing I've noticed this offseason is that the scrutiny we fans give to these reports is somewhat out of proprtion to the care with which they're written. As you and ematz point out, "aggressive monitoring" is a nonsense phrase that doesn't fit their actions even if it did make sense.

Cotillo did get a follow up tweet with a question about what aggressive monitoring meant, and he said that it means he thinks they are signing one of them but doesn’t know which one specifically.

Cotillo had tweeted out a tease for that article beforehand saying there would be “some news in it about potential moves”… only for it to basically be “the Red Sox could sign another 1B, but I don’t know who.” 🤦♂️
He’s been on the Duval-return-to-backup-1B train all off-season, but Duvall hasn’t played 1B in six years. He’s only played 40ish career games at 1B to boot (for comparison Refsnyder has played 36 career games at 1B).
That said… the Sox still have yet to put Liam Hendriks on the 60 Day IL, so there’s space for somebody!

Funny last year I was asking about Sogard seeing how consistent he was and everyone laughed at me. Now he might make the team! lol

It feels like you make both these claims often (that you were early on a take and that you were widely teased for it) and truthfully I’ve always been pretty skeptical of both. I think there has always been some level of doubt that Sogard could be a real contributor but I can’t imagine anyone A) feeling strongly enough about it or B) wanting to manifest a Red Sox prospect failing that they’d have laughed at you for the take.

I looked for Sogard in his posts from April back to January last year. Couldn`t find anything but did see Kavadas would be on the opening day roster. Plus a lot of Casas can`t hit but can only get BB. We all make wrong predictions. It`s the claim that he was laughed at that got to me.
