Well that is not good, I was cautiously optimistic we'd see Giolito closer to 2019-2021 version than 2023. Don't want to jump to conclusions, way too early for that but that opt out bares watching..

The initial reaction to Giolito might be "Okay, here comes Montgomery." But with Rafaela looking good (so far) during Spring Training, was wondering what exactly the Red Sox were asking the Padres for in a possible Jarren Duran deal last month that seemed to get particularly steamy before ultimately not happening. You would assume it would have been for pitching, even if it's just a talented starter they like in the high minors. If Giolito is down... do they circle back on that?

Who knows what's going on, but currently envisioning a scenario where the Sox want him to keep pitching through a partial UCL tear and Giolito would prefer to get paid $40 million to rehab and enter free agency with a clean elbow

The Padres and Red Sox haven't lined up well for a trade because the Red Sox and Padres both need SP. The Padres pitching rotation is in worse shape than the Red Sox. Their #4 and #5 are Randy Vasquez and Pedro Avila. In the off chance a pitcher is included from the Padres they will not contribute the Red Sox's major league roster.

After Giolito I think Rafaela is even more likely to start in AAA personally.

Someone posted a tweet a while ago showing the Sox were really close to making the cut for being a revenue sharing recipient team. I'm not sure how that all works, I think revenue and payroll are part of some weird formula. Maybe the team makes a push to make the cut for that.

I don’t know how close the Red Sox are actually being to being a revenue receiving team, but it would affect their own QO guys and lessen the hurt if they were to sign QO guys next offseason. That mixed with maybe more cash to spend next offseason (if they re-invest the revenue they receive, which is a might big if) would actually be pretty beneficial to 2025 and beyond. Obviously tho, that’s not the place we want to be in.

Is it up to the team or MLB which spring training stadiums have the statcast equipment?

Just a feeling but I cant shake the feeling that Duran is going to have a lot of nagging injuries this year and when all is said and done we'll mostly be looking at an OF of O'Neill in LF, Rafaela in CF, and an Abreu/Refsnyder platoon in RF.

Brandon Walter option to AAA, Franklin German, Melvin Adon, Helcaris Olivarez, Alex Hoppe, Stephen Scott, and Nathan Hickey reassigned to minor league camp.

Nathan Hickey showed out well with the bat. Walter was ok - I'm hoping he can find another gear with the fastball, his other stuff looked really good.

Been wondering for a while if Refsnyder would get some work at 1B (where he's started like 40 games or so in his MLB career IIRC). He's a better hitter than Bobby. And when it comes to Cron... do we know when he'll get into a game yet? It's been quiet on that since he signed. If Rafaela makes the opening day roster, Refsnyder if not as a backup 1B (plus occasional OF/pinch hitter) might not have a spot otherwise? He is 6'0 in height for those who are antsy about the height of your backup 1B.

Casas is the guy I'd have been more eager to get something done on an extension if I was Breslow but maybe there's some sort of rationale behind targeting Bello first. Maybe they went to both at the same time, Bello's # was lower than Casas so they figured they'd start there.
There also is the question of Casas defense, if it doesn't get to at least slightly below average and he becomes more DH than 1st baseman then locking him in long term maybe isn't the best idea. I'd still do it anyway because I think his bat is that special but I could sort of see it.
