They have the transition tag on him so he technically has a contract iirc, he can just go look around and see if he can get more and then come back to us to see if we wanna match (again iirc lol) It basically seems like restricted free agency and the franchise tag had a baby I like to think of it as the McCourty "handshake" agreement but made official to protect the Patriots. Isn't Dugger angry about the tag? Not that it matters much.

Not sure but, if so, that's why they'd want the tag (bc they wouldn't get the handshake).

I wouldn’t think he’d be mad about it, fairly certain he can go get a long term deal if he can get it. This isn’t the franchise tag, if anything I think he’d appreciate this because we’re letting him go see what’s out there and set his market. Seems like the safety market this year is kinda nice so I don’t think he’ll find the big contract he’s looking for

Big Mike similar to Ridley to me in that he's FLAWED but still a huge improvement. If they can accelerate costs this year (reducing long term cap implications), I'm game.

The idea that cap dollars spent NOW leave room for cap dollars to be spent LATER is flawed. The cap room travels, year to year. There is literally no value gained paying NOW so as not to pay LATER.
In fact, I'd argue, it can be a detriment. The player has a couple good years and now everyone is saying he's underpaid, casually forgetting when earlier he was overpaid. See: Gilmore, S.
On another note: Jimmy G got cut. Bring him home? Hoyster got cut too but I think his ship has sailed since he made Johnny Football cry.

Hopefully this means there is a real chance of drafting Harrison.

Hopefully this means there is a real chance of drafting Harrison. I think this is another indicator that they're not taking MHJ. I think it's onto plan B for WR which could be Tee Higgins or seeing if the Chargers want to make a deal.

Pats sign DT Armon Watts 1yr 3MM. He was pretty good last year. It was his first good year though. Prior to last year he played about 1/2 A gap and 1/2 B gap. Last year he played about 1/2 B gap and 1/2 over tackle. The move may have contributed to his improved numbers. Prior to last year he had really struggled against the run whereas last year he was good against the run.
Pats nontender Tre Nixon and Terez Hall

I have to say I'm impressed, our GM is acting like Bill basically when our players aren't crazy overpriced due to winning. My biggest worry was Junno Smith type crap. Already onto filling in the holes and building depth. I sure hope we have a few impactful signings left though.
I wouldn't trade for a WR that you have to pay top money for until you have your franchise QB. Draft class is loaded.
I wouldn't mind Mike Williams, but as others said he likely picks the best QB.
Go sign People-Jones, then focus on the draft. Unless you like DJ Chark or Josh Reynolds types. If you don't care about fit you have Marquise Brown, Curtis Samuel and Tyler Boyd.
You always want to hit every big need, that usually doesn't happen in a single year and trying too can do more harm than good.
Just finish off the D in free agency, then attack offense during the draft, like top four picks. Ideally Tyron Smith is signed, but that's unlikely.
If you wanted to trade for a WR, I'd target one during the draft after a team takes another guy. Rumors of players like Dotson on Washington and Moore on Browns being available in that scenario.

I’m resigned to the fact that this team is years away. I don’t want to pay a guy like Ridley who’s not top tier and is almost 30 big money that would have been a waste.
I really hope they don’t draft a QB at number 3 and try to play him year one on this team. I’d rather draft MHJ or trade back for a haul and add talent to the roster. Figure out the QB next year or even the year after.

Daniels in particular scares me. I just hate the idea of deciding what position you want to draft for like this before you even know who will be available there. Unless they love all 3 QBs, which to me would indicate a separate issue of evaluation problems if they love three pretty different prospects.

Figure out the QB next year or even the year after. I agree. The Pats didnt get bad in one year. It would be surprising if they could turn it around in one year. Veteran talent costs (lots of) money so there is a limit to how much a team can improve through FA signings. They need to have a constant pipeline of young cheap talent preferably at the skill positions. The Pats dont have a lot of young talent. I would absolutely not use #3 pick on a QB...not with this OL. You are just throwing away the pick. No QB is going to do well with a porous line and you risk wrecking his confidence and maybe his health. I would first build up the OL, then get a QB. Onwenu is a keeper. Maybe Sow can be another piece...not sure yet. Andrews will likely be gone by the time the Pats are good again. They need 3-4 OLmen. I would try to trade down a bit, 5-8 range would be optimal, and then take an OT (Alt> Latham, Fuega, Mims, Fashanu). The trade down should return at least a 2nd this year plus a 1st next year - maybe more. 2nd round a WR (Odunze if he is still around, McConkey, Legette. RWilson) and an IOL (JpJ, JMorgan OT/OG, Mahogany, Barton). 3rd round another WR (JWilson WR/TE, McCaffrey, maybe Burton). I dont hate MHJ in 1st, but if you take him at 3 then you lose the extra picks and they really need the extra picks.
