Wilyer Abreu at 1.2 WAR in his MLB career in 148 PAs. 4.8 WAR pace if he does that over a full season. I do not expect him to keep being a 140 wRC+ guy but he sure looks like a legit MLB starter. What is going to happen to the outfield, and maybe even during this trade deadline is going to be one of the more fascinating things for me to watch. I still am on high alert for them to sell on Duran, i don’t think he’s the cleanest fit for this roster moving forward while also carrying a lot of trade value. Just a caution that O'Neil may not be back, Refsnyder may not maintain his current pace and Anthony is still not a lock for 2025. I think Duran is a foundation player for this team. To me, Yoshida is the misfit now and going forward.

The answer is probably Wilyer being traded to be the strong side of a platoon somewhere, but i’m not sure how feasible it would be to have an outfield of Duran, Rafaela, Wilyer and Roman going forward. It’s extremely left handed heavy and i don’t think any of those guys make sense as a DH.

All this negative Masa talk has brought me to a dark place. Couldn't imagine losing Devers Story and Casas to injury and have a healthy Masa ride the bench. Especially after hitting a grove he's still a better hitter then more then half our lineup. WTF Cora

Especially after hitting a grove he's still a better hitter then more then half our lineup. WTF Cora I will say that it's unfortunate that with Casas and Devers down their best 5 hitters are Abreu, Duran, Yoshida, O'Neill, and Refsnyder who are all outfielders. One of those guys has to DH and one has to be on the bench any given day, unless they are willing to play Refsnyder at first (which I personally hope is what they choose to do). If they replace Dalbec with Cooper I think you basically go Refsnyder/Yoshida DH platoon, with rotating off days for the other three against lefties/righties respectively. Until/if those guys look like clearly better options than one of the other three and then you switch the platoon partners.

Until/if those guys look like clearly better options than one of the other three and then you switch the platoon partners. If they can get a stopgap 1B like Cooper (come on, Craig...) that seems like it will mostly work, especially when Grissom/Devers are back everyday. (You know, until someone else goes down...) Duran - CF Devers - 3B O'Neill - LF Abreu - RF Yoshida - DH Cooper(?) - 1B Grissom - 2B (catcher of the day) Rafaela - SS Refsnyder as the 10th man who rotates amongst the outfielders Something like that is alot more functional. Maybe not super scary to an opposing team, but if the Sox keep on being in the top end when it comes to runs allowed, the offense doesn't need to be elite to win games - it just needs to be solid.

Devers is back but no Yoshida. Man what is up? Is it simply choosing between the two to DH?

Cora on WEEI literally right now "We do believe he [Bello] will back as soon as the 15 days are up" - he didn't recover as well as after his last start. www.audacy.com/stations/weei

Per Cora, Raffy playing 3B tomorrow and Yoshida will be back in at DH. He's only not playing tonight because Devers has the DH spot.

I don’t know… at this point let’s go the distance : get to none of our starting IF, none of our rotation from opening day. Has that ever happened before?

Well on the bright side I’m glad to see them willing to IL him with a minor injury in a spot where one might be tempted to tell him to be a tough guy that posts every five days while everyone else is down

He's finally playing good defense, he's improved his BB% and cut his K%. He's shown positive adjustments at every level. He's dynamic, athletic, young and cheap.
For a team that isn't ready to go all-in yet, that's exactly the kind of player you want to keep around.

Guardians, Brewers, Orioles, Braves, Red Sox.
That's the five best teams in MLB, according to bRef's SRS.

It's such a damn shame because everything has worked out great with this roster: O'Neill is having his renaissance; Abreu and Duran are picking up where they left off; Casas looked en route to continuing his second half performance from last year; the catchers have been doing great; and literally everyone in the starting rotation is hitting their absolute ceiling.
But then there are the injuries.

...not really ever a witch hunt guy but do we have a training staff/conditioning issue or something I mean, some of the injuries have been flukes (e.g., Story's dive, O'Neill's collision) and it's pretty clear that pitching is only marginally safer than Russian roulette. Let's have Cardinal O'Malley send an exorcist first and then take a look at the training staff.

Right, i get it’s not popular but im just trying to envision what the outfield looks like in a year or two and i don’t think it’s the cleanest fit. And a majority of those things are why i would want to sell him, he would get the most out of the young outfielders (outside of Roman). He’s also a bit older than the other guys and if they think the timeline to compete is 2026 i would understand moving him this deadline. Either way i think a big outfield trade is coming soon.
