But as I recall he was an absolute butcher with the glove at every position I saw him. He's actually gotten to be above average at 1B, but he's definitely a butcher in the OF. Here are his 1B stats:

2021: 70.2, 2, 0 2022: 196, 0, 2 2023: 1244.2, 5, 1

So in very short order, we are likely swapping Reyes for Cooper, Valdez for Grissom, Hamilton for Short, and Dalbec for Smith? I'm not sure it makes sense to platoon Smith and Cooper, so this might mean Yoshida's hand is in bad shape? We have to get at least one DFA to get Smith a roster spot, too.

Now they have Short who can play 3rd, Smith who can play 1st, and I'm not sure where Dalbec gets playing time (unless Yoshida goes down). Even if Yoshida is IL'd though I think I'd still rather have Hamilton than Dalbec in that roster spot. |

Why wouldn't it make sense to platoon Smith/Cooper? They seem like a pretty good platoon combo at first base to me. Cooper has some positional flexibility too so it's not like they'll be keeping two first base only guys for platooning. |

Vlad Guitierez could prob be a DFA candidate, too. With the Sal Romano signing, he, Jason Alexander, and Hangeman seem to have similar roles without occupying a 40 man spots.

It doesn't sound like Walter is particularly close. I wonder if they'd be willing to pay him an MLB salary and have him accrue service time on the 60-day. |

Cooper has some positional flexibility too so it's not like they'll be keeping two first base only guys for platooning. Neither has a huge platoon split but together they could make a decent-fielding 1B with a 110 OPS+. At this point, I'll take it! |
