Looking like Casas is going to be out for an extended period of time based on the article on WEEI about him not even swinging yet because he still has residual pain. I really never expected him to be back before the all-star break anyway, although I was hopeful for better.

Duran LF, Abreu RF, Smith 1B, Devers 3B, Valdez DH, Grissom 2B, McGuire C, Rafaela CF, Hamilton SS I’m sure everyone is going to be super chill about this lineup Smith in the 3 hole? That's an interesting approach. Dommer has to be a natural leader, loved by the clubhouse and a stabilizing veteran presence in the line-up or something, really hope he's not the new guy with pictures of Cora that originally Joely had, then passed them to Dalbec etc. In all seriousness it's probably not that big of deal given that Dommer isn't completely lost of late

Peter Abraham got some quotes from Pedroia about the HOF for his column today and you can tell Pedroia really wants it. He seems like the kind of guy that gets in in 30 years with the Veteran's Committee.

Not that Cooper has been any better in reality anyways. Smith has been ok, and on a young team his leadership is a good thing to have around. As long as we temper our expectations of him, he'll be fine. He at least puts the ball in play and can take a walk sometimes. I think it's less of having blackmail and more of not having anything really that much better to throw on the wall.

Before the leagues most dirty player (Machado) took him out he would have been on the trajectory for HOF consideration. It's really sad when I think about it.

Duran might need a day off, he's been pounding the ball into the ground and K'ing a lot over the course of this slump. He's a streaky hitter so it's probably just a matter of time till he's better, but he's playing a lot.

With the Sox still within spitting distance of wildcard contention and Whitlock now out for the season, do you think they'd consider trading for an SP? Criswell as been unexpectedly effective as a depth pitcher, but beyond him it's pretty much abyss.
Also, Valdez making the most of his second opportunity!

It feels like the farm is deep enough that theyshould be able to use it to get some sort of viable back end type guy without it hurting much if the sox are buyers at the deadline.

Grissom is out of the game, came up limping after a groundout.

Someone remind me about the rule that causes them to insert Wong at 2B when there's a perfectly passable 2B at DH.

Grissom is out of the game, came up limping after a groundout. Yep...camera's were looking into the dugout as they evaluated his hammy and then Cora came over and patted him on the back (as he told him he was out). ... Never mentioned by DOB

The young outfield creates a run. Nice to see.

Gotta admit I am kind of mentally writing off Grissom at this point. Not saying that's entirely rational. Story/Marcelo/Hamilton/Valdez/Meidroth is a solid MI group for next year

"If a player serving as the DH is later used on defense, he continues to bat in his same lineup spot. But for the rest of the game, his team cannot use a DH to bat in place of the pitcher."

iirc Valdez was sent down during a period when the underlying metrics of his batted balls were quite good after a slow start. He was crushing AAA. Hope he found his swing for the rest of the year.

Yeah, there's probably a good reason that they believe in him long-term, but whether because he missed spring training, is still feeling the lingering effects of the illness, or whatever, he's been by far the biggest black hole in the lineup. I'm fine sliding Valdez in there for time being.

Grissom has talent but feels like he very well could get passed by this season if he can't stay healthy.

Chris Sale got rocked today. ERA went from 2.12 to over 3.
Sale in May: 32 IP, 23 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 45 K, 0.56 ERA. Baseball!

Sure would be nice if Valdez' bat has indeed returned. Looks like we'll need a 2B for a bit. Really, that job is entirely up for grabs at this point.
A DL trip and another rehab stint may do Mr. Grissom some good.

Cora has been doing MUCH better with appropriately timed hooks for long enough that I'm noticing. Nice job by Criswell. Good to see him go back to being a real starting pitcher.
