Paulino is most likely to be a big leaguer but he’s also likely a LHH platoon bat-only
Price is a little stiff but at the end of the day it’s 2 guys that are blocked and a lotto ticket. They must really like the Jansen fit

Paulino was an obvious trade candidate as a borderline rule 5 guy but this feels a bit much for Jansen Paulino was definitely redundant here with all the middle infielders and Rule 5. But I’d rather have moved him in a package for a reliever

Did we acquire Jansen or Salvador Perez? Sheesh. Jansen does have twice as much WAR as Perez the last three years combined

Paulino is a decent prospect but as a borderline RUle 5 guy his trade value was really low. Might be that they weren't going to protect him and felt he was a good bet to get selected and so were in a rush to dump him

Doesn't seem like the Yankees even gave up that much for Jazz.

I had earlier suggested the Sox try to acquire the Tigers 2nd catcher, Kelly. I would prefer him to Jansen. I think Kelly is a better hitter and a good defender and the Tigers have a good minor league prospect who Kelly is blocking.
Maybe as someone suggested, they intend to play Wong at first, Gonzales at 2nd, and Jansen at catcher against left haded pitching. I suppose that is slightly better than Wong at catcher, Gonzales at first and Westbrook at 2nd, at least defensively if Wong is decent at first. But I don't see Jansen over Westbrook as much of an improvement offensively.
And if it is Jansen to replace McGuire, I don't get it. Is McGuire that bad defensively? Is Jansen that good a hitter in Fenway.

Paulino was unlikely to get protected in rule 5, Batista is unranked on SP kind of a lottery ticket i guess. I'm fine with the trade, kind of just whelmed.

Love it. Major League talent to help the club, that needs some help. Nice work Bres.

It feels like a miracle that we got two WAR out of McGuire. He has looked horrible at everything the entire time

It was fun following Paulino’s career. I hope he beats the odds

If Jansen was signed for 1 more year I’d really like this as a bridge to Teel. But a lot for a pure rental

Feels like an overpay for a backup catcher, but I guess everyone we gave up is blemished or expendable. BTV has it as roughly equal. (Side note: BTV is apparently behind a paywall now, which is annoying.)

Is Jansen an extension candidate or a pure rental?

I like it. A veteran catcher and RH power bat. I like Breslow's moves so far.

With Paulino included it is now fairly reminiscent of the Vazquez trade. Hopefully works out better for us than it did the Astros. (And I still think Abreu was better than anyone we just sent away)

On a basic level, the spreadsheets have Jansen being worth ~.8 WAR the rest of the way while getting paid less than $2 million. Not going to get that kind of surplus value for free

Is Jansen an extension candidate or a pure rental? I'm in the camp that says Teel is not ready until later in 2025. But if Jansen is good down the stretch he may want to explore free agency. Might be expensive for a backup catcher. But who knows. If he's cheap it probably means he wasn't especially great.

Jansen should get multi-year offers as a free agent, prob not very likely we offer him one. I would love to give him a healthy one year deal though

Dont like the deal. Dont hate the deal.
I think Toronto did well in the deal.
Coffey is still young and has good pop. At least he has a chance. I think Paulino is a decent possibilty to make the majors as a useful utility guy, hardly irreplaceable and not surprised he was dealt. Batista doesnt look like any big loss.
Not a huge dent to the system and nice value for the Jays. Unless Jansen reverts to what he was before the long extended mega-slump I dont really see the point of the deal other than to free up Wong for 1b against lefties. He's just a rental. I'd rather they have dealt for his teammate, the old bearded red headed guy.
