Eh, lineup optimization makes such a marginal difference that I'm fine with managers going off vibes. Duran likes being the lead-off guy, Devers seems to like being the clean-up guy, and Wilyer can run better than Yoshida, so having Abreu in front has some value. This is the same logic that leads people not to vote, not to conserve energy, etc. This one particular impact may not be massive, but it is real, and not caring about it implies you are unlikely to care about optimizing the squad in other ways, which compounds the impact, especially when opposing managers *are* picking up those pennies. There's also just no reason not to. It's basically a free win every year, and every win matters, especially for teams on the WC bubble. Cora explained when he made the switch that he didn’t want Duran and Devers back to back making it easier for opposing teams to find the most impactful pockets for their lefty relievers. If you want your lefty to face both Duran and Devers now, you likely have to go through Refsnyder and Oneill or Wong. That to me more than offsets the lineup optimization of batting Devers second.

He has the top hitters at 1/2/4 instead of 3/4/5 its not like he's ignoring the book on lineup optimization completely. The 4 spot also benefits the most from power, if anything I'd swap Wong/Yoshida but the PH threat makes more sense as constructed.

Hey guys, long time listener, first time caller. Excited to see this series against a WC foe. This will be a good test of what the rest of our season might look like. Do we have any inclination of expectations on Grissom contributing again the big league level this year? Aside from pitching, this appears to be our gap. Feels like our bullpen is a little better rested than it has been in a while, hoping we get a few lockdown performances sprinkled in. My star player for this series is Masa. I think he's been swinging it well and will get AB for at least two of the games. I'll put him down for two HR in this series- time to hear some machoman. Wilyer stop picking the wrong guy? Wilyer just get it right?

Jarren Duran Vs R - 154 wRC+ Vs L - 96 wRC+ Rafael Devers Vs R - 197 wRC+ Vs L - 101 wRC+ (with a 34% k rate) If Duran/Devers were more neutral vs L/R it’s a much easier decision to have them to go 1-2 in the lineup, but sadly they are not

My prediction for this series is that the best player on our team, Jarren Duran, leads us to victory while finally bringing his BA above .300

You can always PH. Raffy's also cooking against LHP lately, so there's that.
Edit: And again, in an optimal lineup, Duran is not leading off against LHP. He's probably hitting 3 with Raffy 5, or maybe 4 if we trust that he's back to mashing pitchers of all shapes and sizes.

He says that, and yet this man is stacking 4 lefties at the top of the lineup, which necessitates PHing in order to break these guys up. Relievers already need to face three batters minimum; if Cora wants to use Refsnyder, he will get to regardless. And if they want a guy to face Duran and Devers with the current lineup, oh well, leave him in for four batters instead of three. An optimal lineup already has a RHH at 3, which means Cora can PH when he wants to instead of being virtually obligated to and then potentially having a weaker flipped split later in the game.

Raffy can’t strike out in that spot especially on 2 belt-high fastballs center of the plate

Paxton has thrown a sinker verrrrrry sparingly in his career, but Savant confirming he threw 2 sinkers to 4 four seam in that inning. Bailey tinkering?
