They're meant to be a lot less formal than other threads on the forum, so to moderate them the same way would be silly. However, we do ask posters to maintain a certain level of decorum in these threads, and we plan on moderating the Gameday threads a little more actively this season. In particular, we ask that posters refrain from being overly repetitive with their posts (if you've made your point, let it go), refrain from monopolizing the discussion (if you are making more than a couple posts in a row, you probably need to slow down a little bit), and of course, follow the Ground Rules ( link). The point is to make these threads worth participating in and fun for all posters, from our long-time fixtures to people just signing up today. -The Management

Singer xERA - ERA: 1.57 Lugo xERA - ERA: 1.28 Ragans xERA - ERA: -0.07
Ragans is the actual ace in Kansas City and it's not close. Singer and Lugo are also both RHP and Kutter has been getting nuked lately. Let's win the first two so game 3 can be gravy.

There is no way that the Red Sox can pull off a sweep in this series.

There is no way that the Red Sox can pull off a sweep in this series. I see what you did there.

Hey guys, long time listener, first time caller. Excited to see this series against a WC foe. This will be a good test of what the rest of our season might look like.
Do we have any inclination of expectations on Grissom contributing again the big league level this year? Aside from pitching, this appears to be our gap.
Feels like our bullpen is a little better rested than it has been in a while, hoping we get a few lockdown performances sprinkled in.
My star player for this series is Masa. I think he's been swinging it well and will get AB for at least two of the games. I'll put him down for two HR in this series- time to hear some machoman.

Starting Wednesday or Thursday (maybe off reports)
We can kind of comfortably slot the bullpen as
6th inning - Simms 7th inning - Garcia 8th inning - Martin 9th inning - Jansen
5th inning cleanup - Kelly, Booser, Criswell, Bernardino
That feels really good with Hendricks possibly having an over/under of an August 21st return?

He is currently rehabbing and needs to be activated from the IL by 8/9, though there have been some rumblings that the Red Sox might option him back to Worcester after that happens. Based on the comments Breslow has made recently I personally am expecting him to be back in the majors at some point this year.

If Paxton is looking like he doesn’t have it tonight, I hope they go to Criswell early.

when Martin, Slaten, Hendriks get back, I wonder if we see more openers to utilize that depth

Going to be mid-90s at game time tonight. Good thing they don’t have turf out there anymore, that used to be an unsafe place to play in the heat.

Duran Abreu Yoshida Devers Wong Smith Sogard Hamilton Rafaela
Lefty heavy lineup against Singer. His splits:
LHH: .284/.358/.492 RHH: .174/.227/.251
Let’s get some runs.

Ah, Kansas City's manager knows that your best hitter goes second. Must be nice.

Ah, Kansas City's manager knows that your best hitter goes second. Must be nice. I don't totally mind Abreu second in between Duran and Yoshida because it means if KC wanted to bring in a lefty reliever to get Duran/Abreu/Yoshida/Devers they're going to have to face Refsnyder in the middle of that group.

You could pretty easily PH for Yoshida instead. Although if Cora were setting the lineup more optimally, Yoshida wouldn't be hitting third to begin with; he'd probably be hitting 5th. Wong would be a decent option at 3 while limiting huge runs of lefties.

Eh, lineup optimization makes such a marginal difference that I'm fine with managers going off vibes. Duran likes being the lead-off guy, Devers seems to like being the clean-up guy, and Wilyer can run better than Yoshida, so having Abreu in front has some value.

This series has been circled on the calendar for a while. The Sox have been better on the road than home, Royals just the opposite. Royals are for real and this will be a tough series for the Sox. But, Sox need to take the series. No excuses and it starts tonight. Criswell may be the the key tonight holding the lead in middle innings. Sox got to Singer early last time, so hope that happens again. Concentration and execution need to be much more consistent, so really hoping for an error free game and success with r.i.s.p.
Am I asking for to much ? Hope not !!

Imagine if in February someone told you that on August 5th Connor Wong would be in the 5 hole and the bottom third was Sogard, Hamilton and Ceddanne and we’d be in the thick of a playoff chase. Seriously this season has given us so much as fans. Let’s keep it going!

Duran likes being the lead-off guy, Devers seems to like being the clean-up guy, and Wilyer can run better than Yoshida, so having Abreu in front has some value. This is the same logic that leads people not to vote, not to conserve energy, etc. This one particular impact may not be massive, but it is real, and not caring about it implies you are unlikely to care about optimizing the squad in other ways, which compounds the impact, especially when opposing managers *are* picking up those pennies. There's also just no reason not to. It's basically a free win every year, and every win matters, especially for teams on the WC bubble.
