People think there are "good" relievers and "bad" relievers. But in any given year there are like 10 "good" relievers at most. Everyone else is just a marginal major leaguer who is not good enough to be a starter, though they might look good for 60 innings. That's why big contracts and trades for relievers so often fail: the idea that you're getting a dependable performer is usually an illusion. Would the Red Sox have been worse off just calling up Zeferjahn instead of trading him and three other guys for Garcia?
Hate to say it but alot of starters are pretty marginal these days. Can't even make it through 5 innings and teams are terrified of letting them face a batting order for the 3rd time, so when all is said and done many games these days are decided by these marginal relievers you're referring to which is why there's a never ending search for effective relievers. And yet pitching is about as effective as ever.

Two catcher/ first basemen / second basemen in a lineup. Something you pretty much see every day.

And yet pitching is about as effective as ever. Is it? Thought they got better results in the 60s, most of the 70s, most of all the 80s excluding 1987. No, it's not the steroid era and hitters without hit tools dominate the game because it's all about jacking HRs so pitching is not really pitching as much as it's just a game of keep away from bats.

Whatever this Mickey Gasper experiment has been about, can we please call an end to it? He’s made 1 out in 4 AB, you act like he’s 2-35 Does 4 AB even qualify as an experiment?

This will be Gasper’s 18th professional start at second base; he had no time there at the collegiate level.

Relief pitchers and closers in general is like playing russian roulette. They can be lights out one year and a Desaster the next People think there are "good" relievers and "bad" relievers. David Robertson still out there crushing it at 39 though!

Good afternoon, esteemed gentlemen. Early warning: If today goes as poorly as yesterday, I'll be looking for someone to scapegoat. Please accept my apology in advance for being misguided and petty - if it comes to that. I try to be better, but find it challenging.

Joe notes that Arizona has nine grand slams this year, and Boston has zero.
I wonder what the record is for most team home runs in a full season without a grand slam.
Boston’s franchise record is 11 grand slams in one season, set in 2005. The MLB record is shared by Oakland (14, 2000) and Cleveland (14, 2006).

Anybody know what O'Neil's problem is ? According to Cora, his finger was jammed during BP. Allegedly Yesterday they said his finger was infected. Has the story changed or now was it jammed and then got infected?

Saturday afternoon nap type of game so far For sure. Happy with how Kutter has looked, but am fully aware of what typically happens in many recent starts.

Question for the advanced stats crowd: does the SS ranging into the OF to play a pop-up that an OF might have played (like Rafaela just did) do anything positive for his (or negative for their) defensive metrics?

The question is moot? I'm not sure any of the defensive metrics (in aggregate) are worth the bag of Cheetos I wish I had in the house... Edit: For those old enough to remember, I'm saying "the question is moot" in Jesse Jackson's voice.
