Feels like bat speed is going to be a pretty good "is he playing hurt?" indicator going forward If we find out that throwing hard a lot is not going to be a great thing for Devers to be doing then I am thinking we will see them force a Casas trade. I do not expect that Casas will have inspired a lot of impassioned pleas to keep him at all costs. It would make it a lot less stressful trying to figure out what to do with all the infielders if 3B was open. I am worried that his trade value is pretty low right now. One thing that very much gives me pause about the idea of moving Devers to first base is that a lot of his defensive issues are down to focus and execution on routine plays, rather than pure lack of ability. Not sure that’s a good quality for a first baseman to have. I haven't watched this year as closely than in year's past, but I'd say 80-90 percent of Devers errors were throwing in general in the past. Between the footwork and short hopping the ball. If you eliminate that, I think you have a really good defender at first base rather than third base. If he botches a ball, underhand to the pitcher and recover. Either way I'm starting to get sold on the idea of Bregman and moving Devers over. I'd rather spend money on a hitter versus a pitcher in free agency, unless it gets chaotic on the player position side. Justin Turner and Placido Polanco will both be gone from the Mariners. They'll decline Polanco's option and buy that out for less than a million dollars. First and Second base will be open for them. So the stars are kind of lining up for the Sox and Mariners to trade Casas and Grissom to the Mariners. I'd want Gilbert or Woo. Anything else I'm going to the Marlins (who also have no infield talent) and see what they're offering up between Alcantara, Luzardo, Braxton Garret.

But he can't play a position on the field. That's the problem and he doesn't have the power to justify occupying the DH position like Devers. I think he could fake it getting some starts in the easier left fields (like Fenway!) just fine, no worse than O'Neill does these days. Cora/Red Sox refusing to let him ever play the outfield doesn't mean he can't, shouldn't, or that other teams wouldn't. There's something going on there because I don't think this was ever the plan for him. I get he's not good out there, but I agree that it's weird they won't even bother playing him at Fenway.

Anything else I'm going to the Marlins (who also have no infield talent) and see what they're offering up between Alcantara, Luzardo, Braxton Garret. For what it’s worth, 66 (edit: 66, not the 66% I originally put) of Devers’s 141 career errors have been throwing errors, so a bit under half. Only 3 of his 12 errors this year are throwing errors. I would rather spend money on a hitter than a pitcher too, but that’s because Juan Soto is looking likely to be the last true superstar free agent for the foreseeable future. I don’t see Alex Bregman aging all that well, there are some signs of diminished athleticism there and I don’t think now is the time to keep shopping in the 22m/year bin. This team doesn’t need more decent players, it needs elite talent. Don’t think that package is bringing back a pitcher anywhere close to the caliber you’re looking for there. Maybe damaged goods Luzardo with Arb3 and Arb4 left, but I don’t think that’s a very useful addition for the 2025 Boston Red Sox.

The starters have pitched better than their records. If you take each starter and adjust their W-L record based on leaving the games with 5 or more innings with a lead and assuming the Red Sox won those games. What would each of their records have been?
‘Quality starts’ vs record (W-L which we all know is fairly meaningless as pitchers are penalized for lack of run support, bad defense, and a crappy bullpen).
Crawford 14 QS vs 8-15 Houck 19 QS vs 8-10 Bello 10 QS vs 14-7 (a lot of run support this year) Pivetta 10 QS vs 5-11 Criswell 1 QS vs 6-4 (Cora pulled him in the 5th inning in most games) Paxton 1 QS (technically made 3 starts, but was injured in the 1st inning in the third one)
I would love to see how many more quality starts the rotation would have had if they had not been derailed by bad defense (additional pitches thrown, hits, and runs in innings that would have been over). Hopefully Story healthy, and a consistent 2B, will show up in better pitching results (which are all beyond a pitchers control).

There's really no reason Henry can't afford Soto and Burnes. I don't even think that gets them into top 3 in spending. Imagine what this club would look like with those guys and the youth movement coming up.

Are we sure we want a 25 year old Ted Williams clone and a likely Cy Young finalist on our baseball team though

This is the last series I can watch before going on my honeymoon where mercifully the Greek islands don’t have any access to NESN that I am aware of When they do the end-of-year public relations disaster press conference, I would be most appreciative if you all would write mean things about Sam Kennedy on my behalf

That Isaac Parades trade hasn't left anyone happy
Parades 0.3 WAR Christopher Morel -0.5 WAR
The Rays did get a rookie reliever who looks good too

Penrod in for Houck, Houck threw only 60p, definitely being careful with his usage.
