Just win the next 10 in a row and they’ll be fine - super easy!
The Twins just blew a game in extras to Cleveland. If Tigers hold on they’ll be a half game back. The last series of the year for WC3 are interesting. Twins play Orioles aaaaaand…. Tigers play a home series vs the White Sox. All credit to Detroit for this miracle run of theirs after selling Flaherty at the deadline

Who is that one guy on the training staff advising the team not to worry about Devers, Tanner or Kenley’s shoulder injuries

Who is that one guy on the training staff advising the team not to worry about Devers, Tanner or Kenley’s shoulder injuries Regardless of if you think the season is over or not, now is not the time to be risking further injury for guys who factor into your long-term success. Devers and Houck should be shut down or at the very least should be limiting their appearances. And for Kenley, he's probably not back, but still I'd rather just send him to the IL to the finish his season and let guys like Guerrero and Penrod get a chance in those higher leverage scenarios and get an audition for Slaten as the closer.

The Twins and the Orioles are doing some pretty impressive collapses. You heard it here first: the three wild cards are gonna be the Royals, Tigers, and Red Sox.

The Sox might very well end up in the Hail Mary zone when the Twins come to town this weekend, and the Mariners suck - but 3 back in the loss column on the wrong side of the tiebreaker to the Tigers is probably how you end up with 1% playoff odds. I don’t think any of us would have guessed at the time, but the costliest losses this season might very well end up being be the two extra innings losses to Detroit at home 6/2 and away 8/30.
I’m trying to remember another team like this year’s Tigers - clear sellers at the deadline who ended up lapping teams that actually tried to improve. Like the 2021 Braves famously added a bunch of dudes at the deadline. The 2019 Nats were mediocre early but had Scherzer, Strasburg, pre-Angels contract Rendon, rookie Soto… No one in Detroit had any inkling whatsoever they might be in this spot

Are we sure we want a 25 year old Ted Williams clone and a likely Cy Young finalist on our baseball team though That is true. Think of all the 4th starters and above average players we could buy. ….or Henry could spend another $25+ per year million on an ace and have the ace AWOL for 4 years. Many on this site act as if Henry did not spend on an ace. He did! DD ignored all the danger signs ! It is now time to spend on a new ace since the old one is off the books….

M's losing 1-0 out west. Twins lose in extras. Tigers beat the Royals.
Was ready to stick a fork in these guys last night. Then you get a night like tonight where the results all look good.
That said, let's not get insane here. Sox aren't making 8 games up on Baltimore. Even getting past Minnesota, Detroit and Seattle would be historic.

Just looking around the other team box scores, seeing Zeferjahn and Yorke doing well - and even Kavados getting some big hits - I am happy for them. I do wish we had taken a look at them ourselves.

10 games to go - I predict we will be 5-5 and thus end the year at .500.

Kavadas’ batting average is .181 with a .599 OPS, Zeferjahn has looked good (wasn’t one of his issues injury), and Yorke is hitting, but also made an error (how will his defense be….we have seen a lot of bad defensive play and last 4 years or so…..I hope Story stays healthy…).

Yorke committed an error playing third base. Pirates are desperate for a third baseman. Looks like Taylor CF melted away for Pirates. Infielders are filling in at CF. Created INF void.

I notice, by the way, that the Tigers weren't so emotionally deflated from not being buyers at the deadline that they just stopped trying to win games, which was a common theory about the Red Sox in 2022 and 2023. On the other hand the Red Sox *were* buyers and have managed to look every bit as anemic as they have the last two seasons down the stretch.

I also honestly don't know what stats geeks see when they watch Story, assuming they watch Story. Is this a trick question? They see an elite defender and a great baserunner with a questionable bat. That's what the stats say after all. What do the people who gain all knowledge of the world through their penetrating gaze see?

The Tigers are 18-8 since what I assume was a low level Tigers employee hit Javy Baez with a two-by-four in his right hip and lower back, leading to season ending surgery

Guys get big bucks like that because teams are reasonably certain they won’t get burned by them.

There's obviously a bit of good or back luck involved in a so many of these - just look at Trevor Story's tenure - but I get your point here. If you're going to spend big money regardless there's something to be said for just paying a premium for the highest quality product. Corey Seager was the big moneymaker in that offseason with a 10 year $325 million contract - and in three years in Texas he's accumulated 15.2 fWAR (which Fangraphs has valued around $120 mil in production) and won a World Series MVP. Meanwhile, Javy Baez has accumulated about 2 WAR in three years in Detroit (including a negative number this year) off a 6 year $140 mil contract.
