Wow - handing this mess to Shugart? I guess there isn't much else - if Weissert and Winck aren't available due to last night

Bases loaded, two outs, one run game... one swing ends the game either way.
And the Red Sox have won four in a row, Royals won, Twins about to lose.

Did the Red Sox decide to tank the very second that the Royals score got posted?

Seattle, fighting for their life - J P Crawford has 4 Ks - the last two with men in scoring position. They are behind 4-3 in the bottom of the 8th in Hou.

It is fitting that the Red Sox finally go on a four-game winning streak, just as everyone is being shut down.

I know it’s maybe a 2% chance at best, but what the hell is this team gonna do if the Royals, Mariners and Twins absolutely crap the bed the next 4 and the Sox win the next 4 to get into the playoffs? It will literally be the weirdest playoff berth of all time.
EDIT: just looked it up on Fangraphs and it’s a 0.7% chance. If this happens Netflix will be buying every billboard in America to promote its series.

It is fitting that the Red Sox finally go on a four-game winning streak, just as everyone is being shut down. As long as they were trying to win, they were putting Devers in the middle of the lineup to post a .443 OPS over 21 games. Once they stopped trying they allowed themselves to replace him with guys who are physically able to play baseball and they've scored 27 runs over 4 games.

The needed playoff math is something like:
Sox 4-0 (84) Royals 1-4 (84) Twins 2-3 (83) Mariners 2-2(83)
The bottom two are very realistic, and the Sox are playing well enough that you could very much imagine running the table. But Royals have tons of margin of error on their end. If Sox win finale vs TOR and Royals drop one to Nats, at least the final series of the year means something, even if it’s the unlikeliest of circumstances

Then the Twins have to go up against the Orioles which is a tall order. Lastly, Mariners have to face the Athletics but maybe there’s some fire in those A’s to show off in their last series in the Colliseum? It’s a squeeze, but cards do lineup in the Sox favor in terms of what the others have to go up against heading into their respective final season series.

Thinking about the Yankee fans when Fitts takes the mound tomorrow. They're probably thinking, "Cant wait to wrap up the division tomorrow"
