So I copied that from the gameday thread. Sorry I don't have enough knowledge on proboards to quote by name.
Is Marrero at least a little underrated on here? He's not the next in line of the Jeter A-Roid Nomar like with the bat as far I know coming out of college before he got injured and had a rough season he was more highly thought of offensively then the general consensus around here would leave you to believe or am I misremembering? He's also not the second coming of Iglesias with the glove but who is? Not a perfect match but I think of JJ Hardy with a little less pop and a little more average and probably a tick better defense and he was thought of as above average on both sides of the ball. Thoughts?

If he were above average on both sides, he should have been drafted within top 5 pick. Steven Drew could be a good comp. But unfortunately he wasn't. He is a pure SS with questionable bat.

Questionable bat is taking it too far. He's probably never going to hit for much power considering his build (which makes J.J. Hardy a bad comp), but he has the batspeed and bat control to hit for a decent average and the plate discipline (more walks than strikeouts his senior year of college, 34:48 BB/K in Lowell last year, 12:19 BB/K in Salem this year) to be an above-average on-base guy. Add that to above-average SS defense and a handful of stolen bases and you have an above-average regular. He could be something like Yunel Escobar (career .280/.350/.390, 3.06 WAR per 600 PAs) without the crazy, for instance.

I think Merrero will really benefit from filling out physically. He's small and always will be , but he can add some muscle on to that build without sacrificing range and speed. He's a good defender , makes all the plays, but not super flashy. He has good range , but not elite. I think his ceiling is a Marco Scutaro or Freddy Sanchez.
He is on track to progress nicely and is right where he needs to be age/level etc. He should develop into a real solid player, probably not an all-star, but solid.

Marrero is already filled out. He isn't small at all. The reason why he shows little in game power is he is a handy hitter. He doesn't use his lower body well.

It is sss but does anyone else notice his L/R split.
Vs Left 346/469/577 26 AB Vs Right 242/287/305 95 AB
6 BB in 26 AB v Lefties, 6 BB in 95 AB v Righties.

Maybe filling out physically isn't what I mean exactly , to me it just seems like he's wiry (not meaning skinny and not meaning tall). It could possibly just be the youth I'm seeing. Then again, I haven't seen him in person or with his shirt off. Maybe he just needs more pro experience which will benefit his entire game.

When they drafted him, Marrero had the same career silhouette as Bradley: good hitter and good D as frosh and soph (esp. frosh), then a weaker junior year that could possibly be attributed to injuries. He hasn't popped in his first full season the way JBJ did, but how many people do? I've seen him play, and he looked good on both O and D, though there was nothing memorable that day and I do not have a scout's or coach's eye. Much better defense than Scutaro (who was undrafted, and mostly a 2b for years) or Freddy Sanchez who was moved to 3b and 2b. No one who needs a SS will ever move Marrero. Note the 24 sb in 60+ games at Lowell.
I laugh at the idea that because he was not good enough actually to be a top 5 pick, he's nothing to be excited about. I find him more "exciting" than Brentz or Workman or Coyle, though he needs to get better.

I could actually see him eventually be our shortstop and not Iglesias (who I love) or Bogaerts (who I adore). He is a true shortstop who will be decent hitter. He may be the best compromise of the three. Xander will find a position on the Red Sox, and who knows about Iggy. Luckily we have all 3. I thought he was a great value pick last year in a down class.

I loved this pick when it was made and thought when he was put on the ML spring training roster that they also saw him like a Bradley, Jr - a guy who could rise fast and force his way onto the MLB team within 2-2.5 years.

linkHere is a nice look at each team's first pick (most of these are in the first round) from the 2012 draft. I know Marrero (and B. Johnson) have disappointed the majority of posters here, but I think this article lends support to the idea that it really was a weak class. Thats not to say there are no success stories, but I think it was a tough spot to pick in the back half of the first round. The vast majority of success stories like Buxton, Correa, Gausman, Almora, Dahl, and Russell were top picks and even a guy like Michael Wacha wasn't available to us at 24. If you look at the guys selected near our pick (Shaffer, Straton, Coulter, Strahan) there's not too much to make us feel bad about our picks. Obviously, this is an early evaluation but time will tell how well or poorly the Sox drafted in 2012 relative to the rest of the league.

I looked up Marrero's stats. I'm kind of astounded he only has "ONE" error in 50 games while playing a tough position. Favorable scoring? How good is his defense?? Xander has 17 in 98 games last year. For comparision's sake. Slash line 267/338/349. Not much pop. But, does have 16 doubles.

Two defensive plays by Marrero
For more including hitting:

Good find. The range and arm on the defensive plays was impressive-- he certainly looks like a plus defensive SS. It was also good to see him hit quite a few balls to the opposite field, as he's reportedly had issues with trying to pull everything in the past. He's a small-framed guy and will probably never hit for much power, but if he will take fastballs/cutters outside the other way and use the entire field, he will hit for a solid average.

I saw in ESPN.COM the insider section for the Red Sox, the columist suggested the Sox deal Marrero straight up for Jesse Crane. One reason was that he was stuck in the organization at this position. Personally I hate the idea.
The article is called 5 AL trades that need to happen. In it they already referenced the Thornton deal.

Personally I hate the idea. Trading him for a 2+ month rental would be foolish and was surprised at that article. I think some are under valuing him bc he isn't a sexy prospect. He doesn't have any power at all but looks like he could hit well enough to be an above average SS. He had a bad stretch (after the injury) that really killed his avg and I think with his BB% he could be a .340 +OBA in time. His D could easily make him a solid SS and I think next year in AA he will have a lot more value bc he will be a year closer. I'm not saying he is an All Star but I think this time next year he could have a lot more value around MLB. Lets not forget he is 18-18 in SB attempts too.

This guy could be a starting SS for an MLB team in 2015 or late 2014. He's not a chip to give away lightly. Also - and perish the thought - Pedroia may want to seek free agency in a couple years if he doesn't get the extension he thinks he deserves, and Marrero would be the logical fill-in. Marrero isn't as flashy as Iglesias or have the power of Bogaerts, but he does project to be an average MLB SS, which is very valuable.

Marrero also has a high floor-- his defense is great at SS (and he can likely pick up 2B and 3B) and he has enough of a hit tool (combined with some patience and solid speed) to stick at least as a utility infielder. I know certain posters like to knock light-hitting SS prospects, but the offensive bar at SS isn't very high and even if Marrero doesn't have the sexiest ceiling, he's pretty much a lock to be at least a solid MLB player.

I like to knock light hitting SS prospects, but I don't think Marrero fits that bill. He's got wy more going at the plate than the typical payer you are referring to.

While his overall line is a snoozer at .270/.349/.350/.699, he's picked it up over the last month or so, in batting average (hard to read much into that) but also improved walk and strikeout rates. Post-ASB he's .316/.388/.388/.790 with 13 walks and 14 Ks. Maybe a singles hitter, but that's better than a nothing hitter. And, as previously mentioned, the hitting bar is low for a SS with good fielding and baserunning.
And...just writing that made me yawn.

Back to back doubles for Mookie (off the wall in left) followed by a line drive gapper for Marrero. This whole Marrero situation is getting more and more interesting. A guy with elite D at SS who is now developing patience and a bit of power? Yes, please. Has to be in the Top 10 with another week or two like this.

Boy how things can change. 9 months ago Cecchini was so good that he was going to force a trade, and Marrero was a waste of a first round pick.. I was high on Cecchini in Salem, but never gave up on Marrero.

I don't think we can discount the benefit Marrero gets from hitting with Betts on base for half his PA with the pitchers worrying about him stealing.
