Surprisingly affordable deal for McCarthy. He's not as great as a lot of folks think (not a big strikeout guy, gives up a ton of fly balls and gets away with it in the AL West) but he's young and is a great pickup considering his contract (two years, $15.5m).

And as others have said, I really don't see him succeeding anywhere that's not friendly to fly-ball pitchers, because he doesn't have a lot of other ways to get people out.

And the Dodgers have now signed South Korean pitcher Ryu Hyun-jin. Posting fee was $25.7 million. Can't seem to find terms anywhere, but holy crap they really DO NOT care about money at all.
EDIT: Heyman reporting 6/36. I guess that's not horrible, but adding the posting fee that's $61 million. $10M is a bargain if he's any good, but like I said, they are throwing money around like it's nothing right now.

Their starting rotation is now some combination of Greinke, Kershaw, Beckett, Billingsley, Ryu, Lilly, Capuano, and Harang, and yet the Dodgers have still been linked to Anibal Sanchez in post-Greinke rumors. Absolutely nuts.

I have to think their interest in Sanchez was as a fallback if they couldn't work out a deal with Ryu. I know you can't count them out because of money, or anything of that nature, but I just don't see any place for Sanchez to fit. He's obviously not replacing Kershaw, Greinke, or Ryu, and I'm not sure he's a necessarily an upgrade over Billingsley, so the only possible spot they could possibly upgrade with him is Beckett's, and maybe I'm wrong, but I don't see them trading Beckett that fast.

The Guggenheim Partners are negotiating a television deal with Fox that could be worth more than $6 billion. They need to show Fox that their team is going to compete for the long haul. Whether Guggenheim Partners decides to continue to invest such money when its locked into a TV contract is another matter.

If true, that indicates to me that the Royals asked for more than just Lester. If not, they're lucky the Red Sox turned them down, because that's a better haul.
Needless to say, it's a very good move by the Rays as well, given their current strengths and weaknesses.

Nuts. The Red Sox equivalent would be what, Lester and Tazawa?
As a preemptive move, all not-Red-Sox-centric discussion of this trade should go into the 2012 Non Sox thread.

Jerry Crasnick @jcrasnick Hearing that Shields, Davis and Myers aren't only names in trade. It's bigger than that, source said. #rays #royals

Can't wait until that 10-year/60 million dollar extension for Myers in May.

Shields is not a particularly amazing pitcher, a number three at best.

#Royals acquire RHPs James Shields, Wade Davis and player to be named or cash from Tampa Bay for Myers, Odorizzi, Montgomery and Leonard. From KC Royals Twitter: twitter.com/RoyalsJust... wow.

Shields/Davis for Myers would have been considered a win for TB. Getting Odorizzi and Montgomery is flat out theft. Theres not a single analyst who would consider this a win, or even a toss up for the Royals. Wow

I don't know what I'm more mad at, the fact that the Rays just fleeced KC, or that BC didn't have the good sense to fleece them first. Actually scratch that I'm more mad at BC.

Shields is actually a very good pitcher. His trade value was probably much higher than Lester's, so we probably never had a chance at doing a Myers-Lester swap, let alone Lester + extra for Montgomery, Odorizzi, and Myers.

Andrew Friedman is playing the game at it's highest level. Ben Cherrington is just watching...and picking up Larry Lucchino's dry cleaning when he's told.
