Now that Hanrahan, Morales, Bard and now Miller are down and out, who steps up next? We will have two open spots on the 40-man roster, so does not need to be limited to current 40-man players.
Options (in AAA, unless noted):
Convert from starters - Workman, Britton, De La Rosa, Ranaudo (AA) Just DFA'd - Mortensen AAAA - Beato, Carter Under-the-radar - Huntzinger, Martin Lefties - Hernandez, Rowland-Smith (DL), Raf. Perez (AA) Knucklers - Wright, Haeger (AA) Not ready for prime time - Carpenter, Barnes (AA), Celestino (AA), Couch (AA), Doyle (AA)
Discuss.

I'll quote what I wrote ten minutes ago in the game day thread:
Chris Martin is one player who might be a decent option if you need another bullpen arm. I am not sure the team adds another righty reliever with De La Torre, Beato, and Wilson on the 40 man roster.
Rowland-Smith would be an obvious candidate if he did not have his appendix recently removed.
If you are going to convert a starter, I would prefer Workman. Ranaudo has a good ceiling as a starter, and has finally gotten his career on a role.

I said in the game day thread after the posts about Miller being done for the year, that it might be time to get Drake Britton some reps in the PawSox pen. If they need another lefty, I'd like to see him get a shot, if he can adapt to the bullpen quickly.

Actually had thoughts Carpenter would be a find when the Sox got him for Theo, then he was the same wild thrower only and now just plain old hurt and thrower he was before.
What is the deal with Aaron Kurcz? Anyone know anything about his injury, or why something that didn't look serious on the face of it has turned into a 1 year hiatus?
Matt Price might have been overlooked in the year-2 down the line list. One of the guys look for in box scores.

Webster, DLR, and Raunaudo are all interesting internal options for the pen. I am thinking more towards the roster expansion/possibly playoffs. I wonder if Webster or DLR would go back to ST form hitting high 90's if they were used in shorter stints. I think all these guys should be developed as starters, but they might find a role in 2013 in the pen.
Just wondering, I don't see why a legal issue that could affect a players ability to play should be moved off the thread if it relates to the thread. I honestly have no idea if Britton might miss time this year due to his DUI, and I don't know what the 6 posts above me said. This is the place I get most of my trusted baseball information. I understand if it is baseless or dominating a thread, but seeing all those posts deleted really has me questioning if Britton is an option, or if he may be ineligible due to his DUI.

we just signed Eric Niesen, to a MILB deal... so he might be an option

Britton is an option until he's not. There have been no findings at this point to exclude him.

I have a good feeling about Workman being useful.

I agree Workman could be very useful. I expect he'd play well in a temporary relief role this season showing a current 8.66 K/9 in limited AAA appearances after previously having a 10.14 K/9 in AA this season. One would expect his stuff would play up in shorter stints. Does anyone know a site that breaks down minor leaguers in terms of how they perform the first 2 or 3 innings vs the next few innings (2nd time through)?
It's nice to have so many potential arms to contribute so close to the majors including De La Rosa, Ranaudo and Britton. I would so much rather see a starter temporarily converted this season than dealing one of the young arms in a deal for a retread Major League reliever.

Well with Workman being called up to the Sox along with Bradley Jr I guess we shall see soon enough.

Of course Wilson to the DL doesn't exactly help the relief numbers game either.

Workman, at the very least, is going to throw strikes and make guys beat him by swinging. That's valuable in long relief, at the very least, and if he continue to miss bats at the major league level, he could quickly solidify at least a 7th inning role.

Interesting that Workman came up w/out any ML relief appearances, but as they say, desperate times...
I like him a lot in a relief role too, but he'll take some getting used to it potentially.

Don't bring in the kids (excluding Workman) too soon. Go with the veteran options in AAA until none of them prove that they can do it or the organization thinks that it is time to promote Britton and the other young pitchers in the system

Any chance workman starts and doubront is the lefty in the pen? No. A) They said Workman is in the bullpen pretty clearly, and B) Doubront has been good since mid-May. Why would they move him from the rotation?

Of note - the Orioles moved Gausman to the pen last week. He never appeared as a reliever in the minors.
